A VICTORIAN seaside town once described as the worst for a UK short break is undergoing a "21st-century renaissance".
In a Which? survey of more than 3,500 people, the South East coastal resort ranked last in a list of the "best small UK cities for a short break".

Hastings has been praised for its beach, pubs and restaurants
But a recent article in National Geographic praised Hastings for turning round its fortunes – particularly in the past decade.
It stated: "Mention Hastings and people still refer to the battle of 1066, which is a shame given the town has changed so much — since the 11th century, certainly, but over the past decade, too.
"Like many British seaside resorts, Hastings and its neighbour, St Leonards-on-Sea, had their heyday in the Victorian era before falling into a period of decline.
"Their revivals in recent years have been huge and heartening. These are places packed with independent shops, restaurants, pubs and boutique hotels, so many that a week-long visit would hardly even scratch the surface."

It added: "Hastings is popular in the spring and summer, when the sunlit sea is turquoise, the seafront rides are in full swing and the entire town heads out for Jack in the Green — a day of folk dancing, parades and merriment held on May Day.
"But in the winter, too, it takes on an all-new Zen, when pubs feel even cosier and the sunsets even more sublime."
National Geographic also suggests making time for a session at the Samphire Sauna on Hastings Pier for "great sunset views and direct access to the beach below for a dip."
Here is why you should visit this underrated seaside town voted 'worst for a weekend stay'
For those willing to venture further, the magazine recommends windswept Pett Level beach, which is six miles away and "ideal for a low-tide dog walk or rockpool splash."
It added the surrounding hills, dotted with vineyards like Tillingham, Charles Palmer, and Oastbrook, are also worth exploring.
The recommendation comes just three years after Hastings was voted worst in the UK for a short break.
The ranking was based on scores taken from feedback from 3,500 people for each location based on a number of categories.
This included food and drink, accommodation, and cultural sights.

These were then collated to provide an overall average score - which for Hastings came in at just 57 per cent.
Hastings received a "food and drink" score of two out of five, an 'accommodation' score of three out of five, and a 'cultural sights' score of three out of five.
The town was also rated two for "ease of getting around", two for "value for money", and three for "lack of crowds".

Blackpool Pleasure Beach Resort has introduced a free return for ticketholders who attend the attraction on a day that rains. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 4 Blackpool Pleasure Beach Resort has introduced a rainy day guarantee Credit: Supplied 4 This means if it rains for more than three hours on the day you visit, you can return for free within seven days Credit: Supplied The new policy means that guests will always have a great visit to the attraction, because if the weather is poor they can return on a day where it is better. The policy will be in place throughout August and it will need to rain for more than three hours on the day of their trip. If this does happen, then guests can return for free within seven days of their original visit date. CEO of Pleasure Beach Resort, Amanda Thompson OBE said: "It's important to us that guests have the best time when visiting, and while technically speaking the rain doesn't affect our rides, we wouldn't want the wet weather to dampen anyone's day. "We truly believe that you can have a great time at Pleasure Beach come rain or shine, but we know that everything is extra special when the weather is on side." If a guest wants to use a rainy day return, they should arrive at the same ticket centre on the day of their return visit and display their eTickets, paper tickets or confirmation email to staff. The new option can also be used seven days of the week. Blackpool Pleasure Beach resort was also recently named as one of the best attractions to bust kids being bored. created an index compiling the best attractions to take kids to this summer and the Lancashire-based attraction managed to beat the likes of Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. Overall, it scored 31.3 out of a possible 35 marks. First look at new 'tallest of its kind' ride to open at English seaside theme park The attraction is home to 10 rollercoasters, five 'dark' (indoor) rides, five water rides and 12 Nickelodeon-themed rides. Throughout the year, Blackpool Pleasure Beach Resort also hosts a number of shows, including fireworks. Earlier this year, the reimagining of Launch Pad was unveiled, which climbs up to 80 mph and sends riders 210 ft into the air. Studio Tour London all made the list. Some other attractions across the UK offer rainy day guarantees, such as Crealy Adventure Park in Devon. The attraction offers visitors a free return within seven days of their original visit if there is 30 minutes or more of continuous rainfall during their visit. It is worth checking the FAQs or T&Cs of your tickets to an attraction to see if the theme park, adventure park or other destination offers the same guarantee. UK holidaymakers shun typical tourist spots for genuine local experiences

More than three quarters of British travellers are determined to 'live like a local' during their overseas adventures this summer, as the emphasis moves towards having more authentic experiences. In an effort to do this, holiday-makers are seeking dining suggestions from locals residents, opting to shop at local grocery stores and choosing to cycle or walk instead of using public transport to better explore their surroundings. Almost half of UK travellers who favour 'living like a local' whilst on holiday relish exploring smaller towns and villages, alongside browsing local markets, in an effort to escape the usual tourist traps and experience something unique. The research was commissioned by Skyscanner, which has created a Road Trip Planner to help travellers uncover local hidden gems. Laura Lindsay, travel trends and destination expert for the brand, said: "There's something truly special about stepping off the tourist trail and embracing the pace, traditions, and tastes of local life." She added: "Living like a local adds depth and colour to your holiday and creates a genuine connection with the destination. It's not just more rewarding - it's often more fun, too." Research shows that holidaymakers strive to "do it like a local" not only for a more authentic experience—35 percent said it helps them find the best spots for food and drink—but also because they believe it's more respectful, with a third saying they enjoy supporting the local economy. Over four in ten travellers are now more likely to try to "live like a local" on holiday than they were five years ago, possibly due to the influence of social media. Half of those surveyed said social media has made it easier to discover hidden gems off the beaten track while traveling. And when venturing beyond typical tourist areas, two-thirds were surprised by how different a country or place felt. Interestingly, a quarter of holidaymakers have even chosen their accommodation specifically because it seemed like somewhere a local resident would live. However, certain obstacles still prevent travellers from fully immersing themselves in the local culture. Language barriers unsurprisingly top the list, followed by a lack of confidence or uncertainty about where to begin. The survey also revealed that discovering new foods and flavours is the most important experience for travellers, although 36 percent simply yearn for a few moments of tranquillity. To accomplish this, 27 per cent opt to rent a vehicle to enjoy a more genuine local holiday experience, as it offers them enhanced freedom to explore (36 per cent), greater independence (27 per cent) and the opportunity to make spontaneous discoveries (22 per cent). Laura added: "Living like a local doesn't have to mean going completely off-grid - it's about making small, intentional choices that enrich your travel. "And best of all, it helps support the communities you visit, from independent businesses to artisans and family-run restaurants. It's a win for travellers and locals alike."
