'Even Disney has all Indian animators': Mahavatar Narsimha producer says Indian animation can rival Hollywood's best

To call Mahavatar Narsimha the most successful Indian animated film does not do justice to just how big a hit it is. The Ashwin Kumar film is all set to cross ₹200 crore at the worldwide box office. The next highest collection for an Indian animation is a mere ₹30 crore (by Rajinikanth's Kochadaiiyaan). Only two other films have ever crossed ₹10 crore. That puts into perspective the achievement of the film. Mahavatar Narsimha has beaten Disney and Marvel films to become the highest-grossing animated film in India. Mahavatar Narsimha's producer speaks out The makers of Mahavatar Narsimha recently held a grand success meet for the film in Mumbai, where the film's producer and Hombale Films co-founder Chaluve Gowda spoke to HT about the success and the road ahead. Gowda says he was always confident the film would do well. 'When we saw the footage for the first time, we knew it was not a cartoon for kids. It's made for grown-ups, too. We wanted to change the perception in India that animated movies are meant for kids. We wanted to take a risk in that aspect. And of course, we believed in the soul, because this is originally an epic Kannada movie that was made 30 years ago. The story was sound, and there was no doubt about the animation, since it was not typical,' he tells us. Prior to Mahavatar Narsimha, the highest-grossing animated film in India had always been one from Hollywood. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse held the record with its ₹56 crore gross in India, and two Disney/Pixar films followed - Incredibles 2 and Frozen 2. Gowda says their film has proven it can 'compete against the best'. He explains, 'When we get this kind of a reception, it proves that Indian films have an audience. And even for Disney movies, the artists are all Indians. Yes, we had the resources. The technology was there, but someone just had to take that risk and prove that in India, Indian animation movies will also work.' Chaluve Gowda is the co-founder of Hombale Films, the studio behind Mahavatar Narsimha. A word of advice Mahavatar Narsimha's success will likely push others to follow suit. Gowda agrees, 'It will open up a lot of avenues for others to make movies. Earlier, only foreign movies were doing business in India, but when we do this, obviously, the Indian makers will feel confident.' But he does have a word of caution for those makers. 'A lot of animated movies will come after this, and my only word of advice is that everyone shouldn't just follow the trend. They have to do it sincerely.' Mahavatar Narsimha is the first instalment in Hombale's planned animated seven-part Mahavatar Cinematic Universe. It is currently running in theatres.

This 1995 blockbuster earned Rs 5 crores, on budget of Rs 50 lakhs, became cult classic, has been re-released over 550 times, movie is…, lead actors were…

In mid-'90s, a Kannada film emerged that defied cinematic norms, captivating audiences with its raw portrayal of the underworld. This film, directed by a debutant and featuring a leading actor from a legendary film family, not only achieved commercial success but also set a record for the most re-releases in Indian cinema history. Which film is this? The film we are talking about is Om, directed by legendary Upendra and starring Shivarajkumar, the son of the iconic Dr. Rajkumar. Released on May 19, 1995, Om delves into the life of Satya, a priest's son who, after a tragic love affair, descends into the world of crime. What set Om apart was its unflinching depiction of Bangalore's criminal underbelly, a narrative choice that was both bold and unprecedented at the time. How were the performances? Shivarajkumar's role in Om showcased his range as an actor, portraying a college student-turned-gangster with depth and intensity. His powerful screen presence and emotional performance made the character memorable and helped establish the film as a cult classic in Kannada cinema. Actress Prema portrayed Madhuri, the female lead, whose presence significantly influenced the emotional arc of the story. Alongside her, Srishanthi added further depth to the narrative with a heartfelt performance. Sadhu Kokila provided moments of comic relief while maintaining a strong screen presence, and actors like G. V. Sudhakar Naidu and M. S. Umesh brought intensity to their roles as figures from the criminal underworld. How has Om gained a huge respect? Om's impact was not limited to its initial release. Made on a budget of around Rs 50 lakhs, Om was the most expensive film for the Dr. Raj banner at the time and earned about Rs 2 crore before release and final figures went up to Rs 5 crore. It became an industry hit and a cult classic in Kannada cinema, holding a Limca record for over 550 re-releases and becoming the most screened film in the industry's history. The film's music, composed by Hamsalekha, and the cinematography by B.C. Gowrishankar, complemented the gritty narrative, creating a cinematic experience that resonated with audiences.

Coolie advance booking: Rajinikanth's film to witness blockbuster opening against War 2, crosses ₹20 crore

Coolie advance booking: Rajinikanth's much-awaited film, Coolie is all set to hit the theatres across India this week. The film by Lokesh Kanagaraj also stars Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, and Aamir Khan, raising the excitement of the fans. As a result, the film is set for a blockbuster opening day. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Coolie has minted ₹ 14.12 crore alone from advance booking. Considering blocked tickets, the film is eying a release on 14 August with ₹ 20.35 crore. Coolie has sold a total of 6,82,046 tickets so far, with a massive 6,69,050 tickets sold for the Tamil version alone. The Telugu version has sold 3,474 tickets, while the Hindi version has recorded sales of 9,040 tickets. The lowest sales are for the Kannada version, with only 482 tickets sold. However, there is still time for these numbers to grow. Considering the film has many more days to go before release, it is safe to say that Coolie will dominate the ticket window. Major regions, including Tamil Nadu, generated a revenue of ₹ 10.7 crore. Karnataka recorded ₹ 3.89 crore from advance ticket sales, while Kerala collected ₹ 4.57 crore so far. Although Telangana's figures are yet to be revealed, Andhra Pradesh earned ₹ 49.1K. In the Hindi belt, Maharashtra and Delhi brought in ₹ 45.63 lakh and ₹ 22.05 lakh, respectively. Coolie will clash with YRF's War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. War 2's advance booking numbers are way behind the Rajinikanth-starrer for now. Both films will release on 14 August, on the occasion of Independence day. Meanwhile, Coolie will open in five languages-- Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada as a pan-India film. The story of the film revolves around a mysterious man who stands up to a corrupt syndicate that exploits and abuses the coolies in a coastal port town. Talking about the film, Rajinikanth, who completed 50 years in cinema, said, 'I have the same energy and expectations as my fans. God is with us.' The film has been certified 'A' by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). It has a runtime of 2 hours and 48 minutes. Coolie marks Rajinikanth's first 'Adults-only' film in 36 years.
