The UFC lightweight title is up for grabs in the main event of Saturday's UFC 317 pay-per-view card. In the headlining bout, former UFC featherweight champion looks to remain unbeaten and secure his second UFC title when he meets ex-UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for the belt left vacant by Islam Makhachev. We take a deep dive into the Topuria vs. Oliveira matchup.
Topuria vs. Oliveira is not the only title fight on the UFC 317 PPV card. In the evening's co-main event, Alexandre Pantoja looks to defend his UFC flyweight belt against Kai Kara-France.
UFC 317 takes place on June 28 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The ESPN+ streaming pay-per-view card headlines this year's version of the UFC's annual International Fight Week. The main card streams on ESPN+ PPV following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+ and UFC Fight Pass.

Topuria is a former Cage Warriors champion. He joined the UFC in 2020 with a 9-0 record. It did not take him long to make a name for himself. He was ranked No. 14 in the featherweight division after three UFC bouts at 145 pounds and one contest in the 155-pound division. Three of those scraps ended with Topuria winning via knockout.
In his first fight as a ranked featherweight, Topuria dispatched Bryce Mitchell via submission in the second round, earned his first 'Performance of the Night' bonus and moved to No. 9 in the rankings.
A matchup with No. 5 ranked Josh Emmett followed the Mitchell win. Topuria picked up a decision in a 'Fight of the Night' scrap. Topuria's next fight, saw him face Alexander Volkanovski for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 298. Topuria entered that bout as the No. 3 ranked featherweight. He left as the champion after knocking out Volkanovski in the second stanza.
In his first defense of the UFC featherweight crown, Topuria made history, becoming the first fighter to finish former 145-pound champion Max Holloway via strikes, knocking out the ex-champion in the third round of their UFC 308 meeting in October 2024.
When Topuria decided to move to lightweight and give up his featherweight title, he vowed to sit until he got a 155-pound title shot. That fight takes place at UFC 317.
Topuria has a 16-0 record with eight of those wins coming under the UFC banner.

Charles Oliveira (35-10-0-1) has been fighting with the UFC since 2010. He won the vacant lightweight title with his win over Chandler and defended the title once, beating Dustin Poirier. He was booked to face Justin Gaethje in his second title defense, but Oliveira missed weight for that fight, which he won by submission, losing the title on the scale.
Oliveira had a chance to regain the belt in October 2022, but Islam Makhachev submitted him and claimed the vacant belt. Since that loss, Oliveira is 1-1, beating Beneil Dariush by TKO in June 2023 and losing to Arman Tsarukyan via split decision in April of this year.
Oliveira is coming off a November 2024 decision win over Michael Chandler.
Oliveira is the No. 2 fighter in the official UFC lightweight rankings.

UFC 317 Main Event Predictions And Picks: Ilia Topuria Vs. Charles Oliveira
Oliveira has had a fantastic UFC career, and that career is far from over. However, he is part of the 'old guard' of the UFC's lightweight division. That group of fighters includes the men Oliveira has beaten as of late: Michael Chandler, Beneil Dariush, Justin Gaethje, and Dustin Poirier. The fighters who are not in that group are the men who have defeated Oliveira, competitors such as Arman Tsarukyan and Islam Makhachev. Ilia Topuria is part of that new generation.
If Oliveira approaches this fight like he has been competing as of late, he will be in trouble. That means Oliveira cannot opt to strike in range against Topuria, who is a powerful striker with good footwork and finishing skills. Oliveira must fight at distance and keep Topuria from getting in close. Oliveira has not shown a willingness to fight that type of battle.
The betting pick is for Ilia Topuria to beat Charles Oliveira to win the UFC lightweight title by knockout.
UFC 317 Main Event: Islam Makhachev To Vacate The UFC Lightweight Title

In the lead-up to UFC 316, the speculation was if Belal Muhammad retained his UFC welterweight title with a win over Jack Della Maddalena, then UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev would remain at 155 pounds and defend his title against Ilia Topuria. The reason for this thinking being that Makhachev and Muhammad have trained together and that they would not be willing to face each other inside the Octagon.
However, with Jack Della Maddalena defeating Muhammad, that opened the door for Makhachev to move to welterweight. The thinking now being that he will get an immediate title shot against Maddalena in the freshly crowned champ's first title defense.
Makhachev's manager Ali Abdelaziz spoke to MMA Junkie about the situation.
'If Belal were to win, Islam was never going to fight Belal, and he's going to stay in the (lightweight) division. But now Jack wins,' Abdelaziz said. 'Islam has beaten everyone in this division, literally. Dan Hooker, Arman (Tsarukyan), Charles Oliveira, he's on a 15-fight winning streak, finished nine of his last 10 opponents. (There's no one who) deserves to go fight for a second title than Islam, and the reason he wasn't going to do it because Belal was the champion.'
UFC CEO Dana White has announced the plans for Della Maddalena vs. Topuria, but did not announce a date for the 170-pound title fight.
We will have more on the UFC 317 main event as fight night nears, as well as live results, reactions, highlights and more for the UFC 317 pay-per-view card on fight night.

Tom Aspinall: Jon Jones 'entitled to do whatever he wants,' no ill-will for retiring

Tom Aspinall didn't have a hard time coming to terms with Jon Jones' retirement. Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) caught wind of the news of Jones' retirement, but expected it to come during International Fight Week – not at a post-fight press conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. So the news of Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) retiring wasn't entirely surprising for Aspinall, just the timing. "It was always rumors of him retiring," Aspinall said on "The Diary Of A CEO" podcast. "He's putting stuff out in the media saying that he's retiring because MMA, especially at an elite level, is quiet. You hear rumors a lot. I heard rumors from people close to him that he's going to retire and that he's not living like an athlete." With Jones calling it a career, Aspinall has now been promoted to the UFC heavyweight champion. That also means Aspinall has been on the sidelines for almost a year now, and won't get his big title-unification bout with Jones. "I think that he's entitled to do whatever he wants, to be honest," Aspinall said of Jones. "He's done way more in the sport than I have, so he should do whatever he feels is right. Speaking as just a fighter here, for me personally, I don't know if my ego could take it having not done it. But honestly, that's his prerogative. I don't hold any ill will against him for it, and I'm happy to move on with my career now that it's over." Would Aspinall fight Jones if he decides to come back? "With where he's at, he can jump the queue anytime he wants," Aspinall said. "A year down the line, we'll have another three or four contenders knocking on for a title shot, but any time someone like him wants to step up and says, 'Listen, I want to fight again,' they're going to get an immediate title shot. So I'm never going to count that out. "I'm in a spot in my career where there's not all that much footage out there on me. Maybe he sees something on me in the next few fights and he thinks, 'You know what? I can beat this guy. I'm going to come back and beat him.' So mentally, I'm never counting that out. The fight could always pop back up and come back around on me. That's something that I would obviously accept."

ESPN's Tim MacMahon: Buckets, not leadership, is what Houston needs most from Kevin Durant

ESPN's Tim MacMahon: 'Kevin Durant's Twitter bio says, 'I do me, and I chill.' That's all the Rockets need from him. This is not a team that needs to change its culture.' On ESPN's First Take, one of Thursday's roundtable discussion questions was what kind of leader the Houston Rockets might need Kevin Durant to be in the 2025-26 season. Tim MacMahon, who covers the Rockets more closely than anyone else at the network, wasn't having it after hearing comments by former NBA player Markieff Morris that Houston might need Durant to be more of a vocal leader. In an extended rant, MacMahon made it clear: Houston simply needs buckets and to revive its halfcourt offense. MacMahon's comments: Kevin Durant's Twitter bio says, 'I do me, and I chill.' That's all the Rockets need from him. They do not need rah-rah speeches. This is not a team that needs to change its culture. It has done a massive, and successful, cultural transformation over these last few years. It started with the hiring of Ime Udoka and the signing of Fred VanVleet. Steven Adams is another veteran there who has won a lot, and whose voice resonates when he wants to use it. This is not a team that has a leadership void. This is a team that has a phenomenal culture. They're tough, they're nasty. They need freaking buckets, and Kevin Durant can supply those in bunches. That's all he has to do in Houston. To MacMahon's point, with VanVleet and Adams both signing new contracts with the Rockets this month, there shouldn't be any leadership void. The Rockets just need their offense to catch up with their top-five defense — and if it does, Houston should have a legitimate championship contender on its hands. Enter Durant, an All-Star last season and one of the greatest NBA scorers of all-time. More: With Kevin Durant in fold, Rockets' odds surge for 2026 NBA Finals

Cooper Flagg On Being Selected By Dallas Mavericks: ‘Just Completely Blessed'

Cooper Flagg says he's "completely blessed and honored" as the Dallas Mavericks made him the No. 1 ... More overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft. (Photo by) Cooper Flagg is officially a member of the Dallas Mavericks. The Duke Blue Devils phenom was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft – as expected – and will join a playoff-ready roster as a top rookie pick. Flagg will join the likes of NBA champions such as Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson on a team that is only a year removed from an NBA Finals appearance. 'Making it can mean a lot of different things, but I think for me, obviously making it, becoming a professional basketball player is something I would say is making it,' says Flagg." The pressure of being the top overall pick and the national player of the year during his lone season at Duke will obviously still be there, but it definitely be alleviated by the fact that Flagg is playing with a ton of proven veterans. The 18-year-old Flagg probably will be fourth in the pecking order from an offensive standpoint during his rookie season. He'll also be flanked by solid role players such as P.J. Washington, Dereck Lively and Daniel Gafford. 'Enjoying the moment,' says Flagg of being the top pick. 'Just completely blessed and honored. It's been a dream of mine for a long time.' Although the 2025 NBA Draft was this week, Flagg has been training as he normally does as he tries to replicate the success he had in college. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game during his freshman season at Duke. 'I'm training just like almost everybody, putting in my work, trying to get ready as best I can,' says Flagg. "It's going to be a crazy week. Obviously, you have the draft and getting ready for that, and it's kind of just been a whirlwind. 'Just trying to be in the gym and enjoy the moments – you only get to go through this stuff one time, the lottery, the draft and this sort of thing,' Flagg continues to say. 'I've been trying to just enjoy it and still get in the gym and work on things.' Flagg is the obvious NBA Rookie of the Year favorite at -190 odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The Washington Wizards' Tre Johnson and the Utah Jazz's Ace Bailey are tied for the second-best odds at +850. Observers have had a difficult time pin-pointing a player comparison for Flagg, with some comparing him to Kevin Garnett – Flagg grew up as a Boston Celtics fan in Maine and considers Garnett a favorite player of his – with former players such as Baron Davis comparing him to ex-Jazz swiss army knife Andrei Kirilenko and Gordon Hayward comparing him to Celtics great Larry Bird. While Flagg acknowledges Bird as a player on his Mount Rushmore of greats and somebody that he watched a lot of film on, he hasn't molded his game from any specific player past or present. 'I wouldn't really say molded my game after,' says Flagg when asked about players he molded his game after. 'I try to just be myself on the court. There's definitely guys that I've watched film about and certain footworks and different moves and stuff that I've tried to take in and put into my game for sure.' Flagg has developed relationships with several players with Duke ties, including Blue Devils legend Grant Hill. However, he says he hasn't had too many in-depth conversations with NBA players as he prepares for his rookie season. 'Not really,' says Flagg. "I haven't had to chance to speak with a ton of NBA players yet. I think most, most people I've talked to have very similar messages to Coach (Jon) Scheyer, and what they talk about is just enjoying everything. They've all kind of been through what I'm going through right now. 'Just talking to them about enjoying the moment and just trying to take it all in,' Flagg continues to say of the draft experience. "Like I said, you only get to go through this sort of thing one time, so just trying to enjoy it the best I can." Flagg is obviously notable for being a generational talent on the court, but he already made an impact financially off of the court during his collegiate career. The 18-year-old reportedly earned $28 million through deals with Fanatics ($15 million) and New Balance ($13 million), which far surpasses the $4.8 million NIL valuation given to him by On3 as the highest-earning college basketball player. Flagg is partnering with Chime as their newest brand partner as he begins his NBA career as the top overall pick. He explains why he's partnering with the banking service company to help with his finances. 'It was obviously a brand that kind of aligns with my values and what I hold important,' says Flagg. 'It's just kind of situational, the situation that I went through, started getting some money last year obviously with Duke, and going to start getting more and more money. Just aligning with a brand that can help educate me and put me in the right positions financially.' Flagg's involvement with Chime includes an appearance with his mom, Kelly Flagg, on the company's YouTube series, 'Mama, I Made It.' The series documents stories behind popular figures and how their mothers helped shape it. 'My mom and dad are both highly involved and have been the whole time in helping me and helping me deal with everything and all the opportunities that I've been given,' says Flagg of his parents. 'They've been with me every step of the way, and just trying to make everything as easy as possible for me so I can focus on playing basketball.' Cooper Flagg and his mother, Kelly Flagg, will star in an episode of Chime's "Mama, I Made It" ... More series. The collaboration with Chime also includes Flagg being involved with commercials and social activations for the brand. Flagg will obviously earn a lot more money as the No. 1 pick, with his expected deal being for four years and $62.7 million (just under $16 million per year) from the Mavericks. Flagg says he hasn't really sought advice from NBA players yet on how to manage his finances, but his thinking is to simply be 'smart' with his money. 'To be honest, I haven't really talked finances with any NBA players or anything.,' says Flagg. 'Obviously, you just have to be smart with your money, but nothing crazy.' He says his best advice to college athletes in the NIL era is to stay focused on their sport and with all of the money coming in it can be 'overwhelming.' The main thing that has kept him structured is the support of his family. His mother, his father (Ralph Flagg) and his brother (Ace Flagg) have all played basketball at competitive levels. 'That's a big thing is, having systems in place,' says Flagg. 'For me is having my family, having a team of people around me that helps to make my load much lighter. It's been huge for me, having me focus on the main thing.'
