Postecoglou on squad fitness, Bergvall and returning to his style of play

He's simplified his game and the coaches have given him feedback and he's taken that on board."Postecoglou praised James Maddison and Djed Spence after they were not included in the England squad: "Madders, in a really challenging season for us, has grinded his way through and his quality has really come through in the last few weeks - especially when we have been able to give him a spell of rest every now and then."On Spence: "Djed has been super this year. I always feel with these things, particularly with national team selection, it's never a kind of thing where you just draw a line through it. The news will come as a blow to Manchester City and a string of other Premier League and top continental clubs who were desperate to snap up the teenage prodigy. And he went on to make seven Premier League appearances for Ruud van Nistelrooy's relegated Foxes. That sparked interest from Euro giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as well as interest closer to home, led by Man City. Foxes fans feared Monga would be snapped up before he fulfilled his potential at the King Power. City could have swooped before he was old enough to sign his first professional contract aged 17 and Leicester would only have received a nominal fee as compensation for developing the young talent. However that would have been worth a fraction of the kid's true value. Now Leicester have protected their investment by convincing the 15-year-old winger to sign a new scholarship contract with a professional clause that kicks in when he reaches his 17th birthday in July next year. Monga, who joined Leicester's Academy as a nine-year-old, will now begin his Academy scholarship this summer with his first pro contract kicking in by the summer of 2026. Despite being just 15 years old, Monga has already featured for the Foxes first team during the 2024/25 season. 'It's important to have these players for the future for a longer time. I think he will be very good for the club,' said Van Nistelrooy at the end of last season. Polish goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk has seen his contract extended by the Club to 2027 after an impressive campaign that saw the 24-year-old Academy graduate collect 10 Premier League appearances. In total Leicester signed up nine Academy graduates as they prepare for life back in the Championship. But Monga's deal is by far the most significant as it keeps him out of the clutches of Europe's leading clubs. Following a 16-minute debut off the bench against Newcastle in the Premier League, Monga went on to make a further six league appearances for the club under Van Nistelrooy. A club statement said: "Nine exciting young talents from our Academy will extend their stays with Leicester City after a combination of new contracts, extension options and scholarship agreements were confirmed... "Meanwhile, Jeremy Monga has committed to commencing his professional career as a Leicester City player, with an agreement now in place to secure the talented teenager's future at King Power Stadium. "Jeremy will begin his Academy scholarship this summer with his first professional contract scheduled to commence in summer 2026. The versatile winger has been captain of England's Under-16s too and trained with City's U-21s squad as a result of his potential. But that only helped to catch the eye of some of Europe's top clubs, with City among those who were hoping to tie up a move this summer. Van Nistelrooy was boisterous on his future and said at the time: "That would have been some story if Jeremy could have topped his exam week with a winner away at Forest. "If he stays here and this is his future we can build more minutes into his pathway. "I've had many conversations with him and his family. And so hopefully he can sign soon - it's up to him. "It's a joy to work with him and sometimes we speak about GCSEs and mathematics. I even have to help him with his studies sometimes! Bruno Fernandes captained Manchester United during their awful season, but successfully put that behind him to play a key role as Portugal won the Nations League final on Sunday Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes admitted "winning for Portugal is different" as he put his club's difficult season behind him by winning the Nations League on Sunday night. Fernandes played 57 games in all competitions for United this campaign. It was a miserable year for the Red Devils as they finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to win a major trophy. Fernandes captained United in all of his appearances and even held talks over a potential exit earlier this summer. Instead the midfielder has decided to stay at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future. Fernandes has moved his focus to international duty, where Portugal were featuring in the Nations League finals. They beat hosts Germany in the semi-finals to set up a date with bitter rivals Spain in Sunday's final. Fernandes started at the Allianz Arena, taking over the armband after Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted off. The United star then stepped up to score a crucial penalty in the shootout which Portugal won to lift the trophy. And Fernandes has insisted the win has helped him put United's dreadful campaign behind him. 'I'm going to celebrate with my teammates and my family. It's a special moment for everyone. Winning for Portugal is different. It's for our family, for our people, for the country, for our people," he said "Once again, the wave of red that I saw so much on social media was there and made us feel like we were playing at home. Thank you very much for all the support, it was excellent. We felt it, from start to finish, from the moment we got to the end. 'Everything we did during the game helped us win. We knew we were going up against a great team, and at the same time we knew we were a team of the same level. We knew Spain's qualities, we were very aggressive when losing the ball, which was very important." Fernandes pinpointed Portugal's 'individual talent' as the reason for their historic win, their first in a competitive match against Spain since Euro 2004. In particular, he singled out Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes, keeper Diogo Costa and midfielder Ruben Neves. "We had individual talent on our side, such as Nuno [Mendes] , our left-sided player, who ended up running over everyone and ended up giving us two moments of great joy, with his runs," he added. "Individual talent is what makes you win the game, like Diogo Costa's save and Rúben Neves' penalty. We don't need to be favourites. That's up to the person who says it, there will always be those who say that some are favourites, others will say that others are. "That doesn't matter to us. We, the Portuguese, go out there to win, whatever it is, whoever is ahead of us. We want to win every game. Sometimes it's possible, sometimes it's not. "Sometimes we play better, sometimes we play worse. But we always give everything on the pitch and with the knowledge that we are capable of beating any team, at any time."
