Veteran actor Ashish Vidyarthi has voiced for Dr. Doom in Marvel's audio project Wastelanders for Audible. In an exclusive interview with Firstpost, he spoke about his experience of working in this medium, working in as many as 300 films, and the north vs south debate.
Edited excerpts from the interview
How did this project come about?
They came to me and said there's something called Wastelanders and where you have to pay Dr. Doom. And I was like 'What is this?' I wasn't aware of it but when I came to know what exactly it was, I was blown. I really had a great time doing it.

What were the challenges as an actor to be a part of an audio project?
None at all. It was an opportunity for me to do something amazing. I love acting. You can create something only on the basis of your voice. It's not a challenge but something fun.
What's the importance of an actor's voice in his performance?
That plays out beautifully in a project like this. It's not just the actor's voice that you're listening to. It's also the soundscape. The milieu in which we are talking in Wastelanders, it's extraordinary how Audible and its entire team has worked on the scripting part of it, making it so believable. There are a lot of things about this that people won't even notice.
What's your take on this North vs South debate since you have worked in both the industries?
I have never really looked like that because I have worked across 11 languages in more than 350 films. The one thing I made sure of is that I'm an actor. What you're seeing are films, it's not like South films there and North films here. Some films are working but some films are not and you don't know about it.
Not all films are working. What are the things that are working Pan-India? Yeh sab ajeeb sa concept hai. I have worked across cultures and languages and that I feel blessed I'm recognized as one of them. I feel happy when any film in any language does well.
How would you describe the character of Dr. Doom?
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
I got to create a character just out of voice. I won't say challenging but it was exciting.

Ryan Gosling to join MCU? Fans joke as Marvel introduces white son of Black Panther
Marvel Comics has stunned fans with its latest release, 'Marvel Knights: The World to Come'. The new issue introduces 'Ketema'—the son of T'Challa, better known as Black Panther, which means Ryan Gosling's Black Panther meme still has a chance to come true. What has shocked readers most is Ketema's appearance: a white man with blond hair and blue eyes, a striking departure from the traditional portrayal. Set in a speculative future, the six-part miniseries begins with an ageing T'Challa facing a challenge to the throne from his estranged son Ketema. According to the comic, Ketema is the product of T'Challa's early relationship, but his unusual appearance and unclear lineage have sparked widespread speculation. Fans quickly revived an old meme featuring actor Ryan Gosling dressed as a Wakandan warrior, joking that Marvel had finally 'manifested' their favourite joke by casting Gosling as the new Black Panther heir. The playful connection gained traction partly because Gosling has worked with Disney, Marvel's parent company, adding fuel to the imaginative fan theories. Fans took to X and shared their theories. One fan wrote, 'Ryan Gosling Black Panther is now real.' Another person wrote, 'Update: You now live in a universe where Ryan Gosling could actually star in a movie as black panther.' A third fan commented, 'I demand White Black Panther's immediate inclusion in the MCU and cast Ryan Gosling to fulfil the meme.' Fan reactions to Ryan Gosling's Black Panther meme. The mystery surrounding Ketema's origin has led to wild theories including alternate realities and genetic manipulation. But for many fans, the excitement and amusement lie in the surprising visual and the unexpected revival of the Ryan Gosling Black Panther meme. While there is no official link between Gosling and the comic's storyline, his name remains a popular topic in fan circles as they react to Marvel's bold new direction. For now, Ketema's arrival is shaking up the Black Panther legacy and leaving readers eager to see how the story unfolds.

Koshish thi ki log samjhein unki ladai: Writer Muazzam Beg on the film Phule and the legacy of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule
A still from Phule Writer Muazzam Beg Phule, a biographical drama about social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, is more than a period film - it's a story of two towering figures in India's reformist history. Writer Muazzam Beg says the journey of making the film began with a moment of personal reckoning. 'It was an important film to make,' he says, adding that he, too, was surprised by how little he knew about the couple's early activism. 'Jyotirao and Savitribai worked towards social reforms at a very young age,' he explains. 'Agar jan manas ki baat karen toh utna nahi jaante log. Jinko pan-India audience bolte hain, un sab tak Jyotiba Phule pahunchne chahiye.' Writer Muazzam Beg on the set of Phule Film ka core wohi tha - education aur untouchability ki jo ladai ladi thi unhone The film stars Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa in the lead roles and explores the Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule's pioneering work in education, caste reform, and gender equality. 'Ambedkar ke liye zameen toh phir Jyotiba Phule ne hi taiyyar ki thi,' Muazzam points out, referencing how Phule's efforts laid the groundwork for B.R. Ambedkar's later activism. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In fact, Ambedkar himself has written extensively about Jyotirao and Savitribai, acknowledging their role in shaping India's modern reformist consciousness. Condensing such expansive lives into a feature-length film was, Muazzam admits, one of the greatest challenges. 'When an entire life has to be crunched into a couple of hours, you have to make decisions about what to show and what to leave out,' he says. 'But as a writer, and with Ananth Mahadevan as director and co-writer, we didn't take any cinematic or creative liberties. Everything that you see in the film is based on extensive research and facts. We referred to several books.' He adds, 'A biography is vast, and their lives were immensely vast. To make a movie, you have to hold on to the core, and for us, that was their fight against untouchability. Core wohi tha - education aur untouchability ki jo ladai ladi thi unhone. We wanted that message to reach the audience.' Writer Muazzam Beg on the set of Phule We were focused on two things: first, that the words should feel authentic to the people of that time, and second, that today's audience could understand them Writing dialogue for a period film came with its own set of challenges. 'Uss waqt ki bhasha bhi alag thi. Har tarah ke log thay,' he explains. 'We were focused on two things: first, that the words should feel authentic to the people of that time, and second, that today's audience could understand them. Those words that were too difficult to understand, we preferred to avoid. Koshish yehi thi ki logon tak baat pahunche.' The film pays close attention to detail - not just in language, but in costumes, settings, and overall tone. Shot at real locations, the film strives for authenticity. 'Aaj jab hum Jyotiba ki kahani bol rahe hain, toh uske peechhe ek maqsad hai - ki log ye samjhein ki kya ladai ladi unhone, aur kya change laa sakte hain hum apne society mein,' Muazzam says. He talks about the enduring relevance of Phule's ideals. 'There's no doubt that in the last 175 years, the time has changed a little when it comes to the caste system,' he says. 'I have been so inspired by Jyotiba Phule. He never discriminated against anyone on the basis of caste, gender, or any grounds. Once you decide what to do in life, how you go about it - that journey is very inspiring for me.' He adds, the goal was to ensure that the film remained respectful. 'It was very important for us to balance that nobody gets hurt by the film.'
