Experts cautiously welcome AI and 5G vision

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's ambitious plan to expand 5G coverage and accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) adoption has drawn cautious praise from experts who say the country is on the right track but only if gaps in infrastructure, talent and governance are urgently addressed. 'In the next five years, we'll see rapid advancements in technologies like digital twin systems, predictive maintenance and additive manufacturing – all of which rely on fast, stable connectivity,' said Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) AI manufacturing expert Dr Yupiter HP Manurung. 'These are long-term investments that can boost national resilience, but only if matched with strong local capabilities.' The National Tech Association of Malaysia (Pikom) also welcomed the focus on digital transformation in the 13MP. 'Pikom applauds the government's commitment to building a future-ready digital ecosystem that accelerates adoption of AI and 5G, empowering businesses and communities alike,' said its chairman Alex Liew. 'However, visionary planning alone is not enough – successful execution and robust monitoring are critical.' Liew emphasised the need to bridge infrastructure gaps and digital literacy disparities to ensure broad-based inclusion. 'Inclusivity must remain a core principle – guaranteeing equitable benefits across all demographics.' He also urged the government to approach GovTech not as a siloed effort, but as a collaborative process. 'To realise Malaysia's ambition as a leading AI-driven nation, GovTech must involve the quadruple helix collaboration (a concept of interaction between major segments of the society) in which the government, industry, academia and civil society are co-creators of public digital services.' He called for structured public-private working groups, open innovation models and agile policy frameworks to strengthen areas such as service interoperability and procurement reform. The digital reforms are aimed at expanding 5G coverage to 98% of residential, industrial and rural areas. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told Parliament that the initiative is part of a broader effort to build a strong digital backbone that enables inclusive participation in the AI-driven economy. 'This isn't just about infrastructure – it's about ensuring that every Malaysian, wherever they are, can take part in the digital future.'

Praise, flattery and role-play: How South Korea won over Trump in trade talks

SEOUL, July 31 — The South Korean ministers tasked with negotiating a last-ditch trade deal with US President Donald Trump said that to prepare they role-played and solicited tips for engaging with the unpredictable leader. Among the advice they received? Call Trump a 'great person' and speak as simply as possible, Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan told reporters in Washington after the deal was announced on Wednesday. The stakes were particularly high for South Korea, a major export-driven economy, and Kim and other members of the delegation have only been on the job for a few weeks after President Lee Jae Myung won a snap election in June. Kim called Trump a 'master of negotiations' and said each of the team, which included Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol and Minister for Trade Yeo Han-koo, took turns role-playing as the US president to prepare. 'We tried to talk like President Trump, and President Trump's way of talking is very terse and straightforward,' Kim said. 'We prepared a lot of scenarios on our own on how to answer this or that question.' Koo said the team only knew for sure they would be meeting Trump when they saw it on social media. The meeting itself went for about half an hour and the two sides went back and forth on the amount of the investment fund, which was eventually settled at US$350 billion (RM1.5 trillion), Koo said. 'We collected a lot of negotiation strategies used by our counterparts in advance and thought a lot about how to respond, so the negotiation was very smooth,' he said. Yeo quoted Trump as saying his personal involvement is rare in dealing with officials who are not heads of state, and means 'he respects South Korea very much and attaches great importance to South Korea.' Earlier in the talks the US had pressed South Korea to lift restrictions on imports derived from cattle older than 30 months, but Yeo helped defuse that by showing the Americans a photo of massive protests that occurred years ago over concerns about mad cow disease. 'I think it helped them to understand the situation in Korea,' Kim said. — Reuters

13MP: 98% 5G by 2030 for AI & Digital Trust

PETALING JAYA: The government is targeting 98% 5G coverage across residential, industrial, and rural areas by 2030 to support the nationwide adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan. 'This isn't just about infrastructure. it's about building the digital backbone that enables Malaysians in all corners of the country to participate in the AI-driven economy,' he said. AI literacy programmes will also be introduced at the primary education level to instill early understanding and familiarity with the technology. Meanwhile, efforts will be made to expand local intellectual property, boost strategic funding, and foster cross-sector collaboration between academia, industries, and young innovators. 'These are are concrete steps to empower people, protect national interests, and ensure that Malaysia's digital future is one that leaves no one behind,' he said. Aligned with this goal, the government also aims to develop at least 5,000 digital entrepreneurs by the end of the decade, creating a broader base for innovation and job creation. To reinforce trust in the growing digital landscape, Anwar said a National Digital Trust and Cybersecurity Strategy will be introduced. 'We must protect personal data, counter cyber threats, and uphold our digital sovereignty,' he told Parliament. Complementing these efforts, the government will establish a National Data Bank as a unified data repository, alongside the creation of a Data Commission to oversee digital governance and ensure responsible data usage.
