Crude palm oil prices stabilise as supply concerns ease, stocks rise

Focus Malaysia11-06-2025
THE local CPO price delivery ended the month at RM3,855/Mt with an average price of RM3,881/Mt on higher ending stocks as concerns over limited supply risks dissipated.
'Moving ahead, we anticipate that the crude palim oil (CPO) prices will remain stablised, hovering within the range of RM3,900–4,200/Mt,' said MIDF Research (MIDF) in the recent Monthly Sector Report.
This is typically in line with seasonal production trends, as the pollination period ends in March and PO output is expected to recover, potentially leading to an increase in closing stock levels.
CPO output in May-25 grew to 1.77 mil tonne or +3.9% year-on-year (yoy) versus prior year, supported by robust growth from the eastern estates, particularly in Sarawak (+6.4% yoy) and Sabah (+13.0% yoy).
The fresh fruit bunch (FFB) received by mills inches to 9.05 mil tonne (+1.3% yoy) well supported by a decent average yield of 1.48 tonne /ha, inline with the onset of the seasonally fruitful months.
Additionally, the average oil extraction rate (OER) in the mills improved to 19.89%, driven by betterset of crops across most estates.
Favourable weather conditions have allowed quicker FFB evacuation activity, bringing the fruitlets with higher oil content.
Looking ahead, with the end of the inter-monsoon and pollination periods, drier weather and a faster recovery in FFB evacuation activities expected from May onwards, this allows estate productivity to gain momentum, particularly in terms of harvesting and manuring activities.
Note that, local CPO production is projected to reach 19.5 mil Mt in 2025 (+1.0% yoy), with the bulk of the recovery anticipated to materialise in the second half of 2025 (2H25), driven by improved set of crops and estate efficiencies.
'We opine sector's top-line to continue uptick in 1HCY25 in-line with higher average CPO price assumptions,' said MIDF.
However, margins are likely to remain under pressure due to the persistent elevated cost of production, caused by higher locked in fertiliser costs of 2HCY24, coupled with elevated external FFB purchase expenses amid low mills utilisation rates.
'We are maintaining neutral call at this juncture, while CPO prices are expected to remain under pressure, production is likely to perform, leading to a ceteris paribus performance for CY25,' said MIDF.
Therefore, MIDF foresees only a handful of players likely to benefit from elevated CPO prices.
Hence, they recommend avoiding smaller players with significant exposure to external FFB purchases, as the aforementioned factors could risk their CPO production, particularly during the current biological tree rest environment. —June 11, 2025

LDP cautions against new minimum wage hike

Published on: Wednesday, August 20, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 20, 2025 Text Size: Ong criticised comparisons between government-linked companies (GLCs) and private sector businesses, noting that some large corporations and GLCs have set entry-level salaries at RM3,000. Kota Kinabalu: Liberal Democratic Party Vice President David Ong cautioned the Government against implementing another minimum wage increase soon after the recent adjustment to RM1,700, which took effect nationwide on Aug 1. He said businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), need more time to adapt to the current wage structure before facing additional financial pressures. Advertisement 'Less than a year after the last increase, talk of yet another hike is premature and risks placing unnecessary strain on businesses that are still adjusting,' he said in a statement. He criticised comparisons between government-linked companies (GLCs) and private sector businesses, noting that some large corporations and GLCs have set entry-level salaries at RM3,000. 'GLCs operate under very different conditions, with guaranteed contracts, subsidies or monopolies that protect their income streams. 'Most private businesses, especially SMEs, operate on thin margins and face direct market competition,' he said. He said SMEs comprise nearly 98 per cent of Malaysian businesses and employ almost half the country's workforce. Many are currently struggling with reduced consumer demand, rising operational costs and cash flow constraints due to global economic challenges. He said premature wage increases could lead to unintended consequences, including job cuts, hiring freezes or business closures, outcomes that would ultimately harm workers rather than protect them. 'We must ask, what new skills or productivity gains have workers acquired in less than a year that would justify another wage increase?' he said, emphasising that salary increases should correspond with improved productivity and skills development. Instead of rushing into another minimum wage hike, he suggested the Government should allow businesses more time to absorb the recent wage adjustment while focusing on reducing living costs through stricter price controls and anti-profiteering enforcement. He also called for enhanced support for SMEs through training programmes, digitalisation initiatives and productivity improvement schemes. 'Workers deserve fair pay and a decent standard of living, but wage hikes must be gradual, realistic and supported by policies that strengthen competitiveness,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Campaign rewards customers of mall, bank for their loyalty

Yasser and his family with the Proton 7 that he won in the lucky draw. A NATIONWIDE campaign open to Sogo shoppers and Bank Islam cardholders earlier this year drew 25,000 entries. It offered over RM128,000 in prizes, including a Proton 7 as the grand prize, a Blueshark R1 electric scooter for the second prize and RM3,000 worth of Sogo gift vouchers for three lucky winners. The 'Jom Balik Kampung Bersama Sogo & Bank Islam' campaign was held across Sogo's four locations in Kuala Lumpur, Central i-City (Shah Alam), Mid Valley Southkey (Johor) and Mayang Mall (Terengganu). Shoppers who spent a minimum of RM150 in a single receipt at any Sogo store were eligible to participate, with Bank Islam cardholders receiving two additional entry forms with the qualifying spend. Winners were selected through a random draw witnessed by Sogo Malaysia corporate planning head Chuah Eng Khoon and Bank Islam card business head Ahdan Shariff Muhammad. Prizes were presented during a ceremony at Sogo KL. The grand prize of a Proton 7 went to Yasser Araffat Muhd Dahaban, 47, from KL. Yasser, who works as a section head at an oil and gas company in Saudi Arabia, said the win came as a complete surprise. 'I was already shopping at Sogo and used my Bank Islam credit card that granted me two forms. 'I never expected to win the grand prize. 'When I got the phone call from Sogo, I was so shocked,' said Yasser, who plans to give the car to his mother. He said initiatives like these help strengthen the relationship between brands and their customers. 'It's important for big companies to give back to their customers through lucky draws and prizes like these. 'More companies should follow Sogo and Bank Islam's example,' said Yasser. Syahira Ali from Kuala Terengganu won the second prize while the third prize vouchers went to Siti Kohlijah Bahari (Kuala Terengganu), Manishajeet Kaur (KL) and Goh Chiew Lan (Johor Baru). Sogo Malaysia said the campaign underscored its commitment to recognising and rewarding customer loyalty while continuing to provide meaningful and engaging shopping experiences.
