Teluk Intan FRU truck crash: Police, family bid emotional farewell as Constable Akmal Wafi laid to rest in Kedah

Malay Mail14-05-2025

KULIM, May 14 — The Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel, Constable Akmal Wafi Annuar, who was killed in Tuesday's crash in Teluk Intan, was laid to rest at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Mosque cemetery in Sungai Limau, Lunas, this morning.
Kulim Police chief Supt Zulkifli Azizan attended the funeral along with a team of FRU personnel and Akmal Wafi's family members and friends.
The funeral was conducted according to Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) funeral honours. Zulkifli also presented the national flag to Akmal Wafi's father, Annuar Yusof.
The remains of the 28-year-old constable arrived at his family's residence in Lunas at 6.30 am today and were brought to the Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Mosque for funeral prayers led by Imam Shahril Adzhar Abu Samah.
Akmal Wafi was one of the nine FRU Unit 5 members who perished in the fatal crash involving the FRU truck and a gravel-laden lorry at Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Annuar said the entire family is coming to terms with the tragic passing of Akmal Wafi, remembering him not only as a dedicated officer but as a hero to his loved ones.
'He had only recently joined FRU Unit 5 earlier this year, after completing his training late last year. We accept his passing with a heavy heart...though his service was short, the honour and respect shown to him were immense. We are proud of him. Today, I see him as our family's hero,' he said.
Recalling his son's final days, Annuar shared that Akmal Wafi, the eldest of five siblings, showed no unusual behaviour prior to his deployment.
However, before heading into the operation, he had a light-hearted video call with his sister, Wardina, expressing excitement about an upcoming break and plans to return home on Tuesday.
'He joked and asked his sister to pick him up from Ipoh. I was told he had applied for a two-day leave. He was really happy about getting the leave, and even more so that his motorcycle had finally been repaired. But instead of coming home for a short holiday, he came home for good,' Annuar said, visibly holding back tears.
Annuar also expressed gratitude for the smooth funeral process and extended heartfelt thanks to PDRM and FRU Unit 5 for their unwavering support during this difficult time. — Bernama

Explosion damages 3 homes in Bukit Mertajam, likely over debt dispute

Seberang Perai Tengah police chief Helmi Aris said initial investigations indicated that firecrackers were thrown into one of the houses, causing a significant blast that damaged the home and two adjacent properties. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A powerful explosion early this morning damaged three houses in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, with police suspecting the incident was linked to a debt dispute. Seberang Perai Tengah police chief Helmi Aris said initial investigations indicated that firecrackers were thrown into one of the houses, causing a significant explosion that damaged the targeted home and two adjacent properties. The ceilings and front yards of all three homes were damaged by the 1.05am blast. Two vehicles parked outside the affected homes were also damaged by the impact, said Helmi in a statement. 'The incident is suspected to be related to a debt. The suspects are believed to be two unidentified men who fled in a car,' he said. Helmi called on members of the public who witnessed the incident or have any information to contact the Seberang Perai Tengah police or senior investigating officer Assan Alimudin at 012-4418081. The case is being probed for committing mischief by fire under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison and a fine, upon conviction. The case is also being investigated under Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957 for causing an explosion likely to endanger life or property, punishable by up to seven years' imprisonment, a fine of RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

Trump hails troop deployment as California readies legal battle

LOS ANGELES: US President Donald Trump said Thursday that Los Angeles was 'safe and sound' for the past two nights, crediting his deployment of thousands of troops to quell anti-deportation protests, as California prepared for a legal showdown over his unprecedented move. With protests spreading across the United States, a night-time curfew has been in place in its second-largest city with authorities tackling vandalism and looting that scarred a few city blocks. 'Our great National Guard, with a little help from the Marines, put the L.A. Police in a position to effectively do their job,' Trump said on Truth Social, adding that without the military the city 'would be a crime scene like we haven't seen in years.' The mostly peaceful protests ignited last week over an escalation in efforts to apprehend migrants in the country illegally, but there were also pockets of violence, including the burning of self-driving taxis and hurling stones at police. Trump deployed several thousand National Guard troops and 700 active-duty marines over the objections of Democratic California governor Gavin Newsom, the first such action by a US president in decades. Trump charged that the governor 'had totally lost control of the situation.' 'He should be saying THANK YOU for saving his ass, instead of trying to justify his mistakes and incompetence,' Trump added. In Spokane, in the northwest state of Washington, another night curfew was declared after police arrested more than 30 protesters and fired pepper balls to disperse crowds, officials said. In Seattle, Washington state's biggest city, police arrested eight people after a dumpster was set on fire and projectiles were thrown. Three people were arrested in Tucson, Arizona, following clashes with police, the Arizona Republic reported. Protests also took place in Las Vegas, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Milwaukee, Chicago, Atlanta, and Boston, according to CNN. 'Democracy is under assault' Trump won the election last year partly on promises to combat what he claims is an 'invasion' by undocumented migrants. 'If I wasn't there... Los Angeles would have been burning to the ground,' he told reporters Wednesday Around 1,000 of the 4,700 troops Trump deployed were actively guarding facilities and working alongside ICE agents, said Scott Sherman, Deputy Commanding General Army North, who is leading operations. The rest -- including 700 active duty Marines -- were mustering or undergoing training to deal with civil disturbances, he said. The Pentagon has said the deployment will cost taxpayers $134 million. Newsom, a Democrat widely viewed as eying a 2028 presidential run, has accused Trump of escalating the confrontation for political gain. He warned earlier this week that the militarization would creep beyond his state's borders, saying 'democracy is under assault right before our eyes.' Lawyers for California were expected in court on Thursday to seek an order blocking troops from accompanying immigration officers as they arrest migrants. Trump administration lawyers called the application a 'crass political stunt.' Military parade A nationwide 'No Kings' movement was expected on Saturday, when Trump will attend a highly unusual military parade in the US capital. The parade, featuring warplanes and tanks, has been organized to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the US Army but also happens to be the day of Trump's 79th birthday. The Trump administration is painting the wave of protests as a violent threat to the nation, requiring military force to support regular immigration agents and police. But Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the crisis had been manufactured in Washington. 'A week ago, everything was peaceful in the city of Los Angeles,' she told reporters. 'Things began to be difficult on Friday when raids took place... that is the cause of the problems. 'This was provoked by the White House.' Arrests by masked and armed men continued Wednesday. A pastor in the LA suburb of Downey said five armed men driving out-of-state cars grabbed a Spanish-speaking man in the church's parking lot. When she challenged the men and asked for their badge numbers and names, they refused. 'They did point their rifle at me and said, 'You need to get back,'' Lopez told broadcaster KTLA.

Nearly 160,000 harmful online content removed this year, says Fahmi

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said 57% of the removed content was from Facebook, 28% TikTok, and 13% YouTube. PETALING JAYA : Social media platforms Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube have removed 159,518 pieces of harmful content related to online gambling, scams, cyberbullying, and fake news as of yesterday, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. These removals were part of 174,473 takedown requests made so far this year, Bernama reported him as saying. 'About 51% of the content involved online gambling, 25% were related to scams, 12% cyberbullying, and 9% fake news,' Fahmi said at the ministry's monthly assembly. He said 57% of the removed content was from Facebook, 28% TikTok, and 13% YouTube. These three platforms account for nearly 95% of the problematic content identified. Fahmi also raised concerns about the continued presence of child exploitation content online, especially on Facebook. 'This raises questions about whether current laws and cooperation are enough, or if we need a more strategic approach,' he said, citing last year's joint operation, known as Op Pedo, between the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). On efforts to regulate social media, Fahmi noted that a new licensing framework introduced earlier this year aimed to make digital platforms safer, especially for children. He also highlighted the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, passed in Parliament last December and set to be enforced soon. The Act gives MCMC the authority to act against platforms that fail to meet safety requirements. The OnSA has received royal assent from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and is currently being prepared for enforcement.
