" She further stated that the monsoon session of Parliament, which is ongoing, is also not functioning in a completely peaceful manner, due to which it is not operating properly and as per the expectations of the people. "Concern among the people is natural because of this, as the burning issues of the public and the country are not being discussed with full seriousness," said Mayawati. The discussion on the possibility of a negative effect on the country's economy and development due to the heavy US tariff on Indian trade is being widely debated everywhere, she said, adding that it needs to be properly discussed, especially in Parliament, because it is related to the national interest and the country's 'good days'. "It cannot be taken lightly, and the country's future cannot be put at stake. Both the govt and the opposition should pay proper and appropriate attention to this," she added. Additionally, whatever doubts are being raised in the country regarding voters, voter lists and their revision, EVMs, etc, which are related to the country, public interest and democracy, should be resolved as soon as possible, she said. Month after Gambhira bridge collapse, locals demand pontoon bridge
Vadodara: Pointing to the pontoon bridges set up for the Kumbh Mela — village heads and district panchayat members on Monday urged the state govt to establish an alternative means for commuters to cross the Mahi river. This comes a month after the Gambhira bridge collapsed on July 9, killing 22 people. The Gambhira bridge over the Mahi not only linked Central Gujarat to Saurashtra but was also the shortest crossing route for those living in the border villages of Anand and Vadodara districts. After the bridge collapse, scores of students, factory workers and labourers began crossing the river on small, rowed fishing boats, to avoid a detour of at least 45km. However, all boating was later stopped, following directives from the Anand district collector, who cited the new boating rules. These were framed by the state govt after the Harni boat capsize in Vadodara on Jan 18, 2024, which killed 12 schoolchildren and two teachers, during a picnic. "Ever since the bridge collapse, thousands of students from Padra and Jambusar talukas of Vadodara district are having trouble getting to their schools and colleges in the university town of Vallabh Vidyanagar in Anand district," said Harshadsinh Parmar, a member of the Vadodara district panchayat, from Mujpur village, which is on the Vadodara side of the Gambhira bridge. "Thousands of youth, especially residents of villages in Borsad and Anklav talukas of Anand district, who work at factories in Vadodara's Padra taluka, are struggling to get to their workplaces. Even transporting vegetables from Padra, a major vegetable-producing area, to Anand and other parts of Central Gujarat has become a daunting task. If no alternative route is created, the economy of Central Gujarat will suffer," said Parmar. Parmar, along with district and taluka panchayat members from Anand and Anklav, along with the sarpanches of Bamangam and Gambhira villages, made representations to both the Anand and Vadodara district collectors, demanding an alternative bridge. "The Gujarat govt announced that a new bridge, parallel to the one that collapsed, will be built within 18 months. However, there is no progress on this front so far," said Nilesh Parmar, a member of the Anklav taluka panchayat. "Until a permanent solution is in place, there must be an alternative for people to commute. During the Kumbh Mela, the UP govt facilitated crossings by millions of pilgrims and their vehicles using pontoon bridges. Such temporary bridges have been erected in Bihar too. If other states can erect temporary bridges, the Gujarat govt can also create a crossing, at least for two-wheelers and cars, so that commuters don't lose work or see their studies suffer," Parmar added. After the Gambhira bridge collapsed, the Umeta bridge between Anand and Vadodara, was closed to heavy vehicles. Monsoon session: Spotlight on UP's 2047 vision with 24×7 deliberations, says Yogi
Outlining the government's ambitious agenda for the Monsoon Session, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday said the state assembly will hold discussions on the 'Viksit UP' vision continuously for 24 hours on August 13 and 14 and urged all parties to contribute to the state's progress. (Deepak Gupta/HT Photo) Speaking to reporters at the Vidhan Bhavan shortly before proceedings of the assembly began, Adityanath said the Monsoon session was important as the government will present an action plan for the next 25 years in the House, adding that the session held in the third year of the Amrit Kaal will chart a decisive course for development. Drawing inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of development, the state government is advancing with the vision of 'Viksit UP' to fulfil the national resolve of a self-reliant and developed India, he said. This vision, prepared in collaboration with NITI Aayog and experts, ensures participation from all sections of society. He said on August 13 and 14, the House will hold a continuous 24-hour discussion on this vision, a consensus for which was reached at the all-party meeting, he said. The opinions of the general public will also be incorporated into the vision document. 'By 2047, when India becomes a developed nation, Uttar Pradesh too will stand proudly as a 'Developed Uttar Pradesh',' he said. The chief minister said during the Question Hour, members will raise issues of public interest, while Zero Hour will focus on other significant matters. The government is fully prepared to answer every question and welcomes meaningful and constructive debate. He urged all parties to make productive use of time, avoid negativity, and contribute to the state's progress. 'We will welcome all proposals brought to the House. Our commitment is to the youth, to the development of UP, and to fulfilling the aspirations of the people,' he stated, adding that those attempting needless disruption will be answered by the public itself. Highlighting the session's agenda, CM Yogi said seasonal challenges such as floods and waterlogging will be taken up, along with in-depth discussions on health, education, infrastructure, welfare of the poor and uplift of all sections. Citing the government's developmental achievements over the past eight-and-a-half years, he said these have earned Uttar Pradesh praise at both national and international levels. Hitting out at the Opposition, particularly the Samajwadi Party, the chief minister said their approach remains rooted in negativity rather than development. Recalling a previous session where proceedings were extended for 36 hours, he said the SP opposed the move and resorted to unparliamentary language, something for which they are already notorious. He urged the Opposition to engage in positive, development-oriented dialogue, he said. Calling the UP legislature the largest in the country, CM said the debates held here set examples for the entire nation. Over the past eight-and-a-half years, the legislature has achieved numerous milestones and engaged in meaningful discussions on matters of public interest, he said. 'This time too, we enter the session with an important agenda to address the aspirations of our 25-crore population,' he said. Extending a warm welcome to all members of the assembly and legislative council from across the state, the chief minister wished for the success of the session, reiterating that it would mark a significant stride towards the development and prosperity of Uttar Pradesh.
