
Consumers ‘adjust' shopping habits amid rising inflation
A new survey has revealed global concern (85 percent of respondents) about inflation's impact on grocery prices, illustrating consumer unease and clear changes in purchasing decisions across the world. Blue Yonder, a world leader in end-to-end digital supply chain transformation, announced the results of its 2025 Global Consumer Sentiment on Grocery Inflation Survey, spotlighting how sustained inflation, supply chain challenges and global tariffs are influencing grocery spending and broader consumer behavior across generations and regions. The survey polled consumers across Australia and New Zealand, France, Germany, the Middle East, the UK, and the US.
'The findings of this survey underscore just how widespread and deeply felt the impact of inflation is on consumers' everyday lives,' said Ben Wynkoop, senior director, global industry strategist, grocery and convenience, Blue Yonder. 'From buying fewer grocery items and cutting back on certain purchases to shopping at discount retailers and reprioritizing spending across other categories, consumers are navigating prolonged uncertainty — and retailers must adapt accordingly.'
Nearly half (49 percent) of all respondents believe newly introduced global tariffs are the leading factor behind inflated grocery prices, followed by increased costs for raw materials (42 percent), increased labor costs in manufacturing and food processing (39 percent), and increased profit margins for brands and manufacturers (33 percent).
The perceived top factor driving inflated grocery prices differs across regions. Consumers in the US (65 percent), the UK (56 percent) and the Middle East (50 percent) feel global tariffs are the leading cause of rising prices. Consumers in ANZ (50 percent) feel that increased profit margins for brands and manufacturers is the top factor for inflated prices, while consumers in France (48 percent) and Germany (47 percent) believe the increased cost of raw materials is the leading cause of grocery inflation.
There is a generational divide, too. Baby Boomers uniquely believe that increased labor costs in manufacturing and food processing are the leading cause for grocery inflation (52 percent), whereas all other generational groups believe global tariffs are the top cause of inflated prices.
Inflation's grip on grocery bills is triggering global concern from consumers. Almost two-thirds of consumers (65 percent) report they would buy fewer grocery items across categories to cope with price increases, while 42 percent would shop at discount and wholesale stores. In addition, approximately one-third would prefer shopping based on promotions and discounts (36 percent) and switching to private label brands (34 percent).
Globally, consumers in ANZ are the most likely to reduce spending on clothing and footwear (67 percent), followed closely by the US (62 percent), the UK (61 percent), France (49 percent), Germany (49 percent), and the Middle East (47 percent).
'With most consumers willing to adjust shopping habits in response to grocery inflation and mounting financial pressures, retailers — not just grocers — need to recognize the importance of building trust with shoppers through transparency, targeted promotions and affordability-first strategies,' Wynkoop added. 'Having the right supply chain solutions can help retailers win with consumers during times of both economic prosperity and difficulty.'

Living standards in Britain look set to barely grow over the rest of the decade and poorer households are likely to suffer a drop, in part due to a welfare squeeze, according to a report published by a think tank on Thursday. Median household incomes after taxes, benefits including pensions and housing costs are on course to rise by a total of just 1% more than inflation by the 2029/30 fiscal year, the Resolution Foundation said. Lower-income families are expected to see a 1% fall. Typical households paying mortgages will see incomes fall by 1% as the impact of higher interest rates feeds through to more borrowers. By contrast, people who own their homes outright are set to see their incomes grow by 3%, the foundation said. The biggest winners are likely to be pensioners with their incomes forecast to rise by 5%. Families with children are set to have no income growth. Adam Corlett, principal economist at the think tank, said the forecasts could prove to be too gloomy if the economy grows more quickly than expected. Low-income households would benefit if the government scraps a two-child limit on some family benefits, he said. The limit was introduced by the previous Conservative government. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is considering ditching it. However, he has said he will not reverse plans to make it harder for people to claim long-term sickness and disability benefits which have run into opposition within his Labor Party.

Britain Vows to Toughen Its Trade Defenses Under New Strategy
Britain said it would toughen up its trade defenses to better protect industries amid a turbulent global outlook of trade wars and tariffs that has shaped its new trade strategy to be published on Thursday. Britain is set to partially implement a deal to remove some of US President Donald Trump's tariffs, but acknowledged that its trade remedies system needed to be more "agile, assertive, and accountable to guard British businesses against global turbulence". "The UK is an open trading nation, but we must reconcile this with a new geopolitical reality and work in our own national interest," Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said. "Our trade strategy will sharpen our trade defense so we can ensure British businesses are protected from harm." As part of the strategy, the government will reform the Trade Remedies Authority. UK Steel has said that the TRA's current powers, under which it proposed to cap how much of certain kinds of steel could be imported, needed to be more robust, and welcomed the trade strategy as a "critical turning point". Britain is aiming to remove US tariffs on steel imports under their agreement, although the implementation of the deal has not been finalized. The government has stepped in to take control of British Steel, and other industries are also seeking support, with AB Foods extending its deadline for deciding the fate of its Vivergo bioethanol plant to Thursday in the hope of a support package. The trade strategy is Britain's first since it has had an independent trade policy after leaving the European Union. The previous Conservative government hailed the opportunities of Brexit as it pursued several free trade agreements. While the Labor government, which came to power a year ago, has concluded free trade agreement talks with India and is making progress on another with the Gulf Cooperation Council, it said the new strategy would focus on quicker and more practical deals than the previous government did.
