Russia hits Ukraine with huge barrage as first Australian tanks arrive
The widespread attack came as Ukraine's ground forces received a long-awaited delivery of the first retired Australian M1A1 Abrams tanks.
Zelenskiy said Russian forces fired some 300 drones and 30 missiles, killing at least one person in the port city of Odesa and damaging critical infrastructure in the northeastern city of Sumy.
Posting a video of flaming buildings to his Telegram account, Zelenskiy wrote that the attacks in Sumy had knocked out power to thousands of homes.
Russia also launched its biggest ever attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Pavlohrad early on Saturday, as part of the large wave of strikes. Pavlohrad is a strategic hub for the Dnipropetrovsk region, where Russian troops have been making advances in recent days.
The Russian Defence Ministry on Saturday said it had successfully downed 87 Ukrainian drones over central, western and southern parts of the country, with 48 of them downed near the Ukrainian border in Bryansk. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin also said that air defences had downed 13 drones headed for the capital.
The large-scale Russian bombardment came soon after Gen Keith Kellogg, U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy to Ukraine, flew back to Washington after a six-day visit to Kyiv. The White House announced a large-scale arms package to Ukraine this week, including additional Patriot anti-aircraft systems, to be paid for by European allies.
Russia's former president Dmitry Medvedev promised on Friday that Moscow would escalate its aerial attacks in response to the EU's latest sanctions package.
AUSTRALIAN TANKS ARRIVE
Meanwhile, the first of 49 retired Australian M1A1 Abrams tanks have arrived in Ukraine, nine months after Canberra announced they would be provided, according to Australia's ABC broadcaster. The delivery had been delayed by logistical challenges and the need for U.S. approval to transfer the American-made tanks.
Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles said the tanks would make a 'significant contribution' to 'Ukraine's ongoing fight against Russia's illegal and immoral invasion.'
The arrival, however, comes amid some concerns. U.S. officials have privately expressed unease about the tanks being 'difficult to maintain' for Ukrainian forces, while an Australian official previously noted their vulnerability to drone attacks.
Despite this, Ukrainian officials have publicly welcomed the tanks, which they had specifically requested.
'Every day that these tanks do not reach the battlefield, more people are killed,' Ukraine's ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, said. He added that Ukraine still needs more military support from Australia, including Hawkei and Bushmaster vehicles.
The 49 tanks, valued at $245n, are part of a total of $1.5bn in Australian aid to Ukraine.

ICC convicts pair over Central Africa war crimes - Africa
The International Criminal Court Thursday convicted a former top Central African Republic football official and a militiaman nicknamed Rambo for multiple war crimes committed during the country's civil war in 2013 and 2014. Ex-sports minister Patrice-Edouard Ngaissona was a senior leader of mainly Christian militias as the country slid into civil war, while Alfred Yekatom, a former MP, commanded them on the ground. The ICC sentenced Yekatom to 15 years behind bars for 20 war crimes and crimes against humanity including murder and torture. Ngaissona received a sentence of 12 years for 28 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Their militia, known as anti-Balaka or "anti-machete", were formed as vigilante self-defence groups after mainly Muslim rebels called the Seleka stormed the capital Bangui and removed then-president Francois Bozize, a Christian. Presiding judge Bertram Schmitt read harrowing details of the violence committed by the militia against suspected Seleka Muslims. Yekatom's men tortured one suspect by cutting off his fingers, toes, and one ear. This man's body was never found. Others were killed and then mutilated. Appearing in court dressed in a light brown suit and waistcoat, white shirt, and dark tie, Yekatom listened impassively as the judge read out the verdict. Dressed in a bright blue jacket, Ngaissona nodded to the judge as his sentence was delivered. The court found Yekatom not guilty of conscripting child soldiers and acquitted Ngaissona of the charge of rape. Both men had pleaded not guilty to all charges. Yekatom was extradited to The Hague in late 2018, after being arrested in the CAR for firing his gun in parliament. Ngaissona was arrested in France in December 2018 and extradited to The Hague. At the time he was head of the CAR football association and a board member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The Central African Republic is among the poorest nations in the world and has endured a succession of civil wars and authoritarian governments since independence in 1960. Violence has subsided in recent years but fighting occasionally erupts in remote regions between rebels and the national army, which is backed by Russian mercenaries and Rwandan troops. Set up in 2002, the ICC is the world's only independent tribunal capable of prosecuting those accused of the world's worst crimes. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

EU says China's links with Russia now 'determining factor' in ties - International
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen warned on Thursday that China's ties with Russia were now the "determining" factor in its relations with the European Union, as she wrapped up a tense summit in Beijing that also saw China agree to speed up exports of rare earth minerals to the bloc. China's leadership has sought to draw the European Union closer as it positions itself as a more reliable partner than the United States and a bedrock of stability in a troubled world. But while nominally intended to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic ties, the EU has made clear there are deep divisions over trade, fears that cheap, subsidised Chinese goods could overwhelm European markets and Beijing's tacit support for Russia's war against Ukraine. Brussels says China's deepening political and economic relations with Moscow since the 2022 invasion have helped Russia's economy weather sweeping Western sanctions. Beijing denies that claim. Wrapping up that summit, von der Leyen told a news conference in Beijing that the bloc had made clear that the issue was now the "determining" factor in its relations with China. She and European Council President Antonio Costa expressed "our expectations that China would follow up on our concerns and the expectation that it would use its influence to bring Russia to accept a ceasefire, to come to the negotiation table, enter peace talks and put an end to the bloodshed", von der Leyen said. She also said the bloc agreed with Beijing to an "upgraded" mechanism for Chinese exports of rare earth minerals -- another key sticking point in ties. China dominates the global industry for extracting and refining rare earths. Since April, it has required licences to export some of the strategic materials, triggering anxiety among businesses worldwide. "If there is a delay... we have now established a mechanism where the companies can immediately ask us to mediate and to find out why there's a delay on the delivery of the critical raw materials," von der Leyen said. And Costa said the officials had raised human rights concerns with Chinese counterparts. 'Deepen cooperation' China, in contrast, framed Thursday's summit as a way for the bloc and Beijing to deepen trust in a turbulent world. Welcoming von der Leyen and Costa at Beijing's ornate Great Hall of the People, President Xi Jinping said "the more severe and complex the international situation is, the more important it is for China and the EU to strengthen communication, increase mutual trust and deepen cooperation". "The challenges facing Europe at present do not come from China," he said, calling on both sides to "make correct strategic choices". Costa also stressed to the Chinese leader that the EU wanted to see "concrete progress on issues related to trade and the economy, and we both want our relationship to be... mutually beneficial". Chinese Premier Li Qiang told the EU leaders in a separate meeting that "close cooperation" was a "natural choice" for the two major economies. "As long as both China and the EU earnestly uphold free trade, the international economy and trade will stay dynamic", he said. - Climate agreement - In rare agreement, China and the EU vowed to "step up" efforts to address climate change. The warming planet is historically an area of convergence between Brussels and Beijing, with both willing to cooperate on combating climate change. Chinese and European leaders agreed on enhancing bilateral cooperation in energy transition and committed to accelerating global renewable energy deployment, a joint statement said. The EU also flagged its yawning trade deficit with China that stood at around $360 billion last year and which von der Leyen described as "unsustainable". Beijing dismissed those concerns, insisting that Brussels must "rebalance its mentality", not its economic ties with China. If EU concerns were not addressed, "our industry and citizens will demand that we defend our interests", von der Leyen told Premier Li. The EU has imposed hefty tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China, arguing that Beijing's subsidies unfairly undercut European competitors. China has rebuffed that claim and announced what were widely seen as retaliatory probes into imported European pork, brandy and dairy products. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

President El-Sisi condoles Putin over victims of Russia plane crash - Foreign Affairs
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi condoled with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, over the victims of the tragic plane crash in eastern Russia. 'I extend, in my name and on behalf of the Egyptian people, my sincerest condolences to my friend President Vladimir Putin and the Russian people for the victims of the passenger plane crash in eastern Russia today,' said El-Sisi in a post on his official Facebook page. The Egyptian president also expressed his heartfelt sympathy and profound solidarity with the victims' families during this difficult time. Earlier on Thursday, a Russian Antonov An-24 passenger aircraft en route from Blagoveshchensk, a city in Russia, to Tynda, a town 568 kilometres northwest of Blagoveshchensk, crashed in the country's far eastern Amur region, with all 49 people on board feared dead, according to Reuters. Preliminary data provided by Amur's governor, Vasily Orlov, stated that the plane was carrying 43 passengers, including five children, along with six crew members. The aircraft was operated by Angara Airlines, a privately owned regional carrier based in Siberia. It disappeared from radar screens while preparing to land.
