Russia hits Ukraine with huge barrage as first Australian tanks arrive

Russia launched one of its biggest aerial barrages of the war against Ukraine overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday, while Moscow reported it had downed 87 Ukrainian drones over its own territory.
The widespread attack came as Ukraine's ground forces received a long-awaited delivery of the first retired Australian M1A1 Abrams tanks.
Zelenskiy said Russian forces fired some 300 drones and 30 missiles, killing at least one person in the port city of Odesa and damaging critical infrastructure in the northeastern city of Sumy.
Posting a video of flaming buildings to his Telegram account, Zelenskiy wrote that the attacks in Sumy had knocked out power to thousands of homes.
Russia also launched its biggest ever attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Pavlohrad early on Saturday, as part of the large wave of strikes. Pavlohrad is a strategic hub for the Dnipropetrovsk region, where Russian troops have been making advances in recent days.
The Russian Defence Ministry on Saturday said it had successfully downed 87 Ukrainian drones over central, western and southern parts of the country, with 48 of them downed near the Ukrainian border in Bryansk. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin also said that air defences had downed 13 drones headed for the capital.
The large-scale Russian bombardment came soon after Gen Keith Kellogg, U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy to Ukraine, flew back to Washington after a six-day visit to Kyiv. The White House announced a large-scale arms package to Ukraine this week, including additional Patriot anti-aircraft systems, to be paid for by European allies.
Russia's former president Dmitry Medvedev promised on Friday that Moscow would escalate its aerial attacks in response to the EU's latest sanctions package.
AUSTRALIAN TANKS ARRIVE
Meanwhile, the first of 49 retired Australian M1A1 Abrams tanks have arrived in Ukraine, nine months after Canberra announced they would be provided, according to Australia's ABC broadcaster. The delivery had been delayed by logistical challenges and the need for U.S. approval to transfer the American-made tanks.
Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles said the tanks would make a 'significant contribution' to 'Ukraine's ongoing fight against Russia's illegal and immoral invasion.'
The arrival, however, comes amid some concerns. U.S. officials have privately expressed unease about the tanks being 'difficult to maintain' for Ukrainian forces, while an Australian official previously noted their vulnerability to drone attacks.
Despite this, Ukrainian officials have publicly welcomed the tanks, which they had specifically requested.
'Every day that these tanks do not reach the battlefield, more people are killed,' Ukraine's ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, said. He added that Ukraine still needs more military support from Australia, including Hawkei and Bushmaster vehicles.
The 49 tanks, valued at $245n, are part of a total of $1.5bn in Australian aid to Ukraine.

President El-Sisi urges Trump to end Gaza tragedy - Foreign Affairs

President El-Sisi made these remarks in a televised address on Monday. During his speech, the president highlighted Egypt's honourable, sincere, and relentless efforts in supporting the Palestinian people. 'Egyptians, I'm reminding you of this — we do not change: We are committed to finding solutions that de-escalate tensions, bring an end to the war, and lead to a final settlement of the Palestinian cause,' El-Sisi said. Gaza needs around 600-700 humanitarian aid trucks daily, he added. Over the past 21 months, Egypt has been committed to facilitating the maximum possible amount of aid into the strip, he noted. The president also affirmed that the available amount of aid and that which has entered the strip is huge, stressing that nothing obstructs it from the Egyptian side. 'Neither our ethics, values, nor our national and moral responsibility would allow us to hinder it. However, the entry of aid requires coordination with the other party present at the Rafah crossing on the Palestinian side," the president stressed. He stated that having the Rafah crossing designated for the passage of individuals, its operation is not solely dependent on the Egyptian side. "The entry of aid and any movement through the Rafah or Karm Abu Salem crossings requires coordination from both sides," he affirmed. The president added that there are over five crossings connecting the Gaza Strip with both Egyptian and Palestinian territories. "Egypt is linked to Gaza through the Rafah Crossing and the Karm Abu Salem Crossing in one way or another." Moreover, El-Sisi renewed his call for the international community to exert every possible effort to stop Israel's genocidal war in Gaza, affirming that Egypt is working unwaveringly to alleviate the civilians' suffering exacerbated by the famine. He also emphasized Egypt's firm stance supporting the two-state solution and rejecting any attempts to displace the Palestinian people or liquidate their cause. Since 7 October 2023, Egypt has actively mediated efforts, along with Qatar and the United States, to reach a ceasefire, facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid to war-ravaged Gaza, and secure the release of captives. The president further highlighted that Egypt's consistent position is rooted in its support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. He also urged the EU countries, the United States, and Arab nations to do everything possible to stop the massacres in Gaza, stressing that the humanitarian tragedy there cannot endure any delay. "Egypt will remain a faithful and trustworthy partner pursuing a just and comprehensive peace. It will continue to support the Palestinian cause, regardless of the challenges," the president concluded.

Gaza crisis, trade on agenda as Trump hosts Starmer in Scotland

US President Donald Trump will host British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday at his Scottish golf resort for talks expected to cover issues from the worsening hunger crisis in Gaza to a bilateral trade deal. Trump, who on Sunday announced a major trade deal with the European Union, said he expected Starmer would also be pleased. 'I like your prime minister,' Trump told reporters, according to The Guardian newspaper. 'He's a little bit more liberal than I am, as you've probably heard, but he's a good guy.' While Starmer had hoped to negotiate a reduction in US tariffs on steel and aluminium, Trump has ruled out any changes to the 50% tariffs on EU imports, saying the trade deal with Britain was 'already done.' The worsening crisis in war-torn Gaza is expected to cast a shadow over the meeting. Starmer's office said the prime minister would discuss 'what can be done urgently to secure a ceasefire in the Middle East.' Starmer is under growing pressure at home and abroad to recognise a Palestinian state. A government source said on Sunday he has recalled cabinet ministers from their summer holiday for a meeting, likely to discuss the Gaza situation. The British prime minister said on Friday his country would only recognise a Palestinian state as part of a negotiated peace deal, a stance that disappointed many in his Labour Party who want him to follow France's lead. Trump on Friday rejected French President Emmanuel Macron's intention to recognise a Palestinian state, a plan that also drew strong condemnation from Israel. Trump said he understood Starmer's desire to discuss Israel, adding that while the United States would increase its aid to Gaza, it wanted others to join the effort. Ukraine will also be on the agenda. British Chancellor James Murray described the situation in Gaza as 'appalling and quite frankly horrifying,' telling British radio, 'Starvation, the securing of food, must not be used as a method of war. It's completely unjustifiable and it must end.' Foreign Secretary David Lammy said Israel must allow aid trucks 'unfettered' access as it was the 'only viable and sustainable way' to get sufficient supplies to the population. Gaza's health ministry has said that dozens of residents have died from malnutrition in recent weeks, as aid organisations warn of widespread hunger among the enclave's 2.2 million people. The two leaders are expected to travel from Trump's luxury golf resort on Scotland's west coast to another sprawling Trump-owned property in the east, near Aberdeen. Starmer travelled to Scotland from Switzerland, where England won the final of the Women's Euro soccer championship on Sunday.

EU, Arab League Reaffirm Commitment to Two-State Solution at Peace Conference

Ahmed Emam The European Union (EU) and the Arab League (LAS) voiced strong support for the two-state solution during an international peace conference dedicated to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Speaking on behalf of the EU, a representative emphasized the bloc's "full commitment to peace and the two-state solution," asserting that the European Union is "the largest provider of aid and support to the Palestinian Authority." The EU also called for equal security guarantees for both Palestinians and Israelis, urging global actors to join a coalition committed to advancing the two-state solution. "We expect Israel to implement the agreements it has signed, but this is not happening at the moment," the EU representative stated. Meanwhile, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit issued a strong rebuke of ongoing Israeli actions in Gaza, saying, "Palestinians have been subjected to genocide for months." He stressed that a new, peaceful Middle East must begin with a just and viable two-state solution. "The road to stability and security in the region goes through the establishment of a Palestinian state," Aboul Gheit declared. The statements come amid ongoing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and stalled negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian leadership. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence"
