Shubhankar placed tied 70th in Denmark

Copenhagen, Aug 15 (PTI) India's Shubhankar Sharma played a round of even par 71 on the opening day of the Danish Golf Championship and was placed tied 70th at the Par-71 Furesø Golf Klub here.
Having failed to make the cut since the Hero Indian Open held earlier this year in March, Shubhankar would be keen to avoid an early end to his week.
Veer Ahlawat shot 2-over 73 and was in danger of missing the cut as he was struggling at tied 113th.
After starting the round on the back nine with a bogey, Sharma birdied the 12th, 16th and 18th holes. A bogey on the 14th meant he would enter the front nine with a score of one under par. A birdie on the sixth and bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes, his closing holes. resulted in a final score of even par.
Englishman Marco Penge played a bogey free round of 7-under 64 to set a new course record and place himself as the sole leader by two strokes at the end of the first day.
Penge made birdies on the third, sixth, 11th, 13th, and 14th holes. He closed his round with an eagle on the 18th.
The Englishman has made six top 30 finishes in seven starts to catapult himself to the fifth spot in the Race to Dubai rankings.
Penge leads by two strokes from five players, with former Danish Golf Championship winner Rasmus Højgaard in close pursuit after carding eight birdies in his five under par round of 66.
Højgaard is joined in a share of second by 2018 Open Champion Francesco Molinari, Canadian Aaron Cockerill, Jeremy Paul of Germany and Scotsman Marc Warren.
Last year's runner-up Lucas Bjerregaard sits in a share of seventh alongside six others.
Nicolai Højgaard had a round to remember as he spectacularly holed out for eagle twice in the space of three holes.
Playing in the group ahead of twin brother Rasmus, Nicolai was two over par through ten holes before he holed out from 111 yards on the par four 12th.
Two holes later at the 14th, he made his second eagle of the day, this time holing out from 144 yards. He then birdied the last to sign for a three under par 68 and a share of 14th place. PTI Cor AH AH

Mohammed Siraj Set To Be Ignored For Asia Cup 2025: Report
Mohammed Siraj is reportedly likely to miss the 2025 Asia Cup, while Shubman Gill would need a big vouch from head coach Gautam Gambhir to be considered. The highest wicket-taker in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Mohammed Siraj, is likely to miss out on the 2025 Asia Cup. According to a report in Cricbuzz, spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh, and one of Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna are likely to constitute the pace attack for the multi-national tournament. Siraj has been the apple of the nation's eye after his match-winning fifer at the Oval in the last Test, but his T20 credentials aren't as solid as some of his competitors. He had a good, 16-wicket season in IPL 2025 but Prasidh (Purple Cap winner), Bumrah and Arshdeep all took more wickets than him. Whereas, Rana was one of the best bowlers in the league last season and impressed in his debut series against England earlier this year. Meanwhile, the report said, Test captain Shubman Gill is unlikely to make the cut, too, unless head coach Gautam Gambhir makes a strong case for him in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s selection meeting in Mumbai, scheduled for August 19. He was the second-highest run-scorer in the IPL 2025 and led the Gujarat Titans well for the second time, but his runs came as an opener. The report said Sanju Samson, who scored three centuries in T20Is last year, and Abhishek Sharma, the top-ranked batter by ICC in the format, are locked in as the first-choice options. The spot for a backup opener/batter is still available, but currently, Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals' Yashasvi Jaiswal is ahead. His Mumbai teammate Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to join him, as per the report, while Jitesh Sharma (and not the likes of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul) is expected to be the backup wicketkeeper. The report mentioned Axar Patel as the vice-captain, despite some rumors that Gill could replace him in that role with the team's eyes on the long-term future under captain Suryakumar Yadav. Hardik Pandya is cemented as one of the all-rounders, with Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar vying for the other spot. Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi are expected to join Patel in the spin quartet in helpful conditions in the UAE. Vishal in hunt for bronze in U20 World Wrestling
Last Updated: Smaokov (Bulgaria), Aug 17 (PTI) Freestyle wrestler Vishal will fight for the bronze medal after losing his 97kg freestyle semifinal bout to UWW grappler Magomedgadzhi Magomedov on the opening day of the U20 World Championships, here on Sunday. The 20-year-old Indian lost the closely-fought semifinal 9-11 and will now take on a yet-to-be-confirmed grappler in the bronze-medal bout. Vishal gave his opponent a tough fight and had the grappler, who was fighting under the United World Wrestling (UWW) flag, in all sorts of trouble before Magomedov managed to eke out a narrow win. Magomedov led 10-4 when Vishal mounted a comeback. The Indian scored a takedown and Magomedov was cautioned for a singlet foul, which made it 10-7. As the bout restarted, India appealed for two more points but the referee had already blown the whistle before the control from Vishal. That challenge gave Magomedov enough time to recover and hang on to a slender lead. Earlier in the quarterfinal, Vishal's opponent, Japan's Noah Leibowitz, pulled out due to injury when the Indian was leading 12-9.
