She started driving an auto at 18, now she's Telangana RTC's first woman bus driver

Indian Express16-06-2025
Telangana's Road Transport Corporation has got its first woman driver, albeit on a contract basis.
En route to Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district from Hyderabad, V Saritha, the first woman to drive a bus for the TGSRTC, told The Indian Express, 'I did not become a driver out of passion for driving. I became a driver because I wanted to provide for my family.'
Saritha, 38, is a tribal woman whose family of three is dependent on her. 'I first started out as an auto driver on the Narayanpur-Chotuppal route in 2004,' she said. She was just 18 at the time.
'I am the only daughter of my parents, who were daily wage labourers. I had to leave school and take up a job because they could not make ends meet,' she said. She has studied up to class 10. Her younger brother was not born when she started working.
Saritha then met someone from an NGO in Delhi. 'I was told that in Delhi, I would get a driving job from which I would not be removed. She said it would be permanent,' Saritha recalled. She moved to Delhi in 2011 and started driving an auto in the national capital. Wanting to improve her standard of living, she then got a heavy vehicle licence. 'I realised that there is more money in driving heavy vehicles and decided to take a heavy vehicle licence,' she said. By 2015, she was driving as a contract bus driver in the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). 'I did not get a permanent job, but used to earn about Rs 30,000 per month. But Delhi is an expensive city,' she said.
She spent most of her earnings on accommodation and food. 'I also had to send money home. I managed to save very little — next to nothing,' she said.
She worked for 10 years in Delhi. 'I kept going, driving through the busy streets of the capital. The government was supportive, though they did not give me a permanent job,' she said.
'I will have to try to become permanent all over again. Besides, I wanted to be close to my parents who live in Hyderabad,' Saritha said on her decision to move back to her home state.
It has been only two months since she moved to Hyderabad and she has already landed a job. JBM Electric Vehicles, which runs 500 buses in a contract with TGSRTC, employed her.
'The government has been very proactive in trying to accommodate me. The government decided to offer me a contract job first. They will surely consider me for a permanent post once I get used to the Telangana roads,' Saritha said.
When contacted, TGSRTC officials said no decision had yet been taken on when the fleet would be able to accommodate Saritha on a permanent basis.
'My mom cannot walk because she suffered a fracture to her hip two years ago. I want to be with her and take care of her. I hope I get a permanent job soon,' Saritha said.

Vehicles without a FASTag will no longer be allowed to enter Tirumala, temple management says

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the Sri Venkateswara temple in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati district, said that vehicles without a FASTag will no longer be allowed to enter Tirumala. Officials said the TTD is also considering allowing only electric vehicles entry into Tirumala in the future. Thousands of devotees visit Tirumala every day in private vehicles and taxis. 'Many individual car owners driving up to Tirumala may not have a FASTag for various reasons. We are issuing an advisory that they should get it before coming to Tirumala. If they do not have it, they should take the help of the facility at Alipiri,' an official said. The TTD said, 'In order to provide better safety standards, prevention of overcrowding and transparent services to the devotees arriving in various vehicles at the Alipiri check point, FASTag will be made mandatory for the vehicles entering Tirumala from August 15.' A facility that issues FASTags have been set up at the Alipiri checkpoint in collaboration with ICICI Bank, officials said. 'It is once again informed that the vehicles without FASTag will be allowed to enter Tirumala only after obtaining the FASTag facility here in the shortest possible time. Devotees are requested to cooperate, or they will not be allowed to enter Tirumala,' the TTD said. The announcement comes as the temple is witnessing over 90,000 devotees on some days, with the TTD finding it difficult not only to manage the pilgrims, but also the incoming traffic. The TTD is also preparing to implement stricter pollution control rules, and allow only battery-operated vehicles into Tirumala. The TTD is encouraging taxi operators to switch to EVs. On Tuesday, a devotee from Bengaluru, Chandra Shekhar, donated two battery buggies worth Rs 11 lakh to the TTD. The board, which has set up some EV charging stations, is in the process of setting up more, officials said. The TTD and the Andhra Pradesh State Transport Corporation are also switching to operating only electric buses to and from Tirumala and Tirupati. In efforts to achieve net zero emissions, the TTD is also allocating its lands at Tirumala and Tirupati to organisations like the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh for the establishment of EV charging stations and battery swapping stations.

Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe Launched At Rs 1.35 Crore

The German luxury carmaker, Mercedes-Benz, has launched the new Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe in the country, further strengthening its top-end luxury performance portfolio in India. The sporty, elegant two-door model combines the best of both worlds - the agility and sportiness of the C-Class with the space, elegance and status of the E-Class, says Mercedes-Benz. The performance coupe is priced at Rs 1.35 Crore, ex-showroom. The new CLE 53 4MATIC+ uses an upgraded version of the 3.0-litre M 256M inline six-cylinder turbo engine. The facelift generation of the high-performance engine, now known as the M256M, impresses above all with optimised combustion chambers with redesigned inlet and outlet channels, new piston rings, optimised injection and a new exhaust gas turbocharger. In conjunction with the new electric additional compressor, this offers an increase in boost pressure by 0.4 bar to 1.5 bar and thus a higher torque of 560 Nm in continuous operation and 600 Nm in overboost for up to 12 seconds. It generates a peak power output of 449 Hp. The powerhouse also gets a second-gen 48V ISG, and the transmission duties here are performed by a 9-speed automatic gearbox. There are five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes in total, namely Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. The 0-100 kmph sprint takes 4.2 seconds, and the speed is electronically restricted at 250 kmph, but can be stretched to 270 kmph with the optional AMG Driver's Package. The coupe rides on air dampers and features rear-wheel steering as well. The interior welcomes passengers with the latest generation MBUX infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch fully digital driver display and an 11.9-inch driver-oriented central display. Besides, the integral seats in ARTICO man-made leather/MICROCUT black microfibre with AMG-specific graphics and red contrasting topstitching combine sportiness with strong lateral support.
