Inside Leeds United's Igor Paixao pain and where they go next

New York Times3 days ago
The sting in the tail of Leeds United's Igor Paixao pursuit left the club's hierarchy smarting. They were always dealing in hope rather than expectation with the Brazilian and the hammer blow eventually came on Monday afternoon.
With 32 days of the transfer window remaining, the club have secured seven new faces and hope to add up to four more. The final quantity of incomings will be dictated by who leaves between now and September 1.

A full-back remains a possibility, especially if Swiss defender Isaac Schmidt is keen to leave for minutes before next summer's World Cup. A striker is a priority, while wingers and attacking midfielders are also on the agenda if the club's preferred options become available.
The natural assumption, no doubt being made by much of the football world, is Leeds will now look to offer another €30million-plus for an alternative target out wide. Sources at Elland Road, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, have indicated it may not be as straightforward as that.
The Athletic has been briefed on what went on with Paixao this week, what's next in the transfer window for the club, and what this knockback means for Leeds.
The issue Leeds, and most clubs, face is finding players who will improve their squad, be willing to join and be available at the right price. The club's hierarchy knows this is not what supporters will want to read, but this is the state of play.
Of the wingers who are better than Daniel James, Wilfried Gnonto, Jack Harrison and Largie Ramazani, United's key decision-makers do not think there are many available to them. There are some, like Paixao, and irons remain in the fire with them, but Leeds do not expect it will be easy to find as perfect a target as the Feyenoord 25-year-old.
They liked his ability to create his own chances, his age, his experience, his resale potential, his finishing and his set-piece deliveries. They also had to wait months for his wage demands to fall into their range because he was someone United considered beyond them as the close season approached.
Manager Daniel Farke will certainly not say no to differential players, as United's hierarchy call Paixao and others. They could be the difference between staying up and going down.
Striker Rodrigo Muniz could be one such player. It has been known for a long time he is the club's key target at the tip of the attack, but as August arrives, urgency is increasing.
Leeds know they can only be so patient, with a strong start to the league campaign a necessity to retain last season's momentum. There will be alternatives to Muniz on United's radar, but the decision they make on how long to wait for Fulham's forward before chasing someone else may be one of the biggest they make in August.

Senior Leeds sources know that window is shrinking and, with the Paixao deal dead in the water, there is a sense the striker chase is where energy will now focus. Schmidt's loan exit, as he himself knows from last August, is a deal Leeds know they can do late in the window if necessary.
Another full-back has to be added before the Swiss is allowed to go. As for further attacking reinforcements, there are bound to be Premier League loan options that could appeal as August rolls on, among more expensive permanent targets.
Paixao proved to be the first, at least public, blow of the summer. Anyone who watched highlight reels of the 25-year-old would have been unable to fight the Raphinha comparisons. Excitement was inevitable as Leeds made progress with the deal.
Chairman Paraag Marathe, managing director Robbie Evans, sporting director Adam Underwood and head of recruitment Alex Davies had assumed he would be beyond Leeds in the early stages of the window. However, in the past fortnight, they found his wage demands began to drop and Marseille were, evidently, failing to get their deal done quickly.
Leeds sources say the club had received emails from Feyenoord and Paixao's representatives suggesting respective terms had been agreed. The former landed with United shortly before half-time in Saturday's friendly win over Paderborn.
Even at that stage, with all three parties seemingly in agreement, Underwood was understood to never feel comfortable about it being a done deal. There was a niggling feeling Marseille's European offering was always what Paixao and his family wanted.
On Sunday, Marathe, Evans and Underwood all held long calls with the player and his representatives. Farke spoke to Paixao too. Those calls from the manager are normally a sign of how advanced negotiations have become.
Even Lucas Perri, United's newest Brazilian of barely 48 hours standing, was on the phone to his compatriot in the dead of the German night on Sunday to convince him of the switch.

By Monday, things had gone quiet at the player's end and Leeds began to read the writing on the wall. Their €32million offer, with €3million in add-ons, was good enough, but it seems Marseille eventually got close enough to that for Feyenoord to give them the green light too.
Leeds cannot afford for next May's reflections to be focused on the star player they needed but didn't get this summer.
There's one month to go, but only 18 days until three points are on the line against Everton.

Women's Open 2025: Charley Hull, Megan Khang join the chase after leader Miyu Yamashita

PORTHCAWL, Wales – As Miyu Yamashita came off a sun-soaked 18th green, where she had just missed one final chance for birdie, the Japanese golfer was presented with a birthday card and a cake. After giving interviews in the mixed zone, she posed for pictures in front of the assembled press on her 24th birthday. There was a bright smile after a testing Saturday on the never-not blustery course at Royal Porthcawl for the third round of the AIG Women's Open. Advertisement Yamashita, a LPGA rookie after standout seasons on the LPGA of Japan Tour, went out on Saturday 11-under-par and came back 9-under. She could hold on to the fact that on a day when everything that could go wrong did, she is still in the lead — though by not nearly as much as she was going into the weekend. A Lim Kim of South Korea shot a 67 to get to 8-under-par after 54 holes, just one shot back. The 29-year-old was one of what felt like a growing group of hungry golfers hitting their form at the right time. Kim has a history of that, of course. In 2020, she came from behind to win the U.S. Women's Open. She had started the final round in ninth place, birdied the last three holes to shoot 67 and take home the silverware on what was her first start at a major tournament. Kim is the only player within four shots of Yamashita who has previously won a major. Yamashita, who dreams of joining the list of major winners, would be a deserved addition should the trophy come her way on Sunday night. She was the first to go bogey-free on Friday when getting back into the clubhouse in only 65 shots. On Saturday, things were different — she bogeyed Nos. 5, 10, 14 and 16. Two birdies helped even out her scorecard and there were some excellent par saves too. A long putt on the 17th, which dropped in after a shot out of the bunker ran a little too fast and past the cup could be viewed as one of the most important shots of the tournament should she win Sunday. She's not backing down! What a moment for Miyu Yamashita to maintain her lead 👏 — AIG Women's Open (@AIGWomensOpen) August 2, 2025 Even for the cake, card and pink paper hat she wore briefly, Yamashita's birthday celebrations are on hold. Her New Zealander caddie John Bennett carried her clubs right through to the practice area. 'Tonight I'll be looking at what went wrong and what went right,' Yamashita said. 'And analysing the day to make the improvements that hopefully will lead to a better round tomorrow.' Advertisement A better round will be whatever it takes to stay in the lead and claim a first major title. As for compatriot and close friend Rio Takeda, who Yamashita was paired with on the first three days, she also found the Welsh winds testing. 'The wind definitely made today's conditions very difficult so it was pretty hard to adjust,' Takeda, 22, said. 'Tonight will be no different to my usual routine, I will get my game ready in the same way and make sure I am well prepared for tomorrow.' That preparation had already started with putting practice in the short game area straight after media duties. Takeda, who hit identical shots to Yamashita on the approach to holes five and seven, also shot a 74. That dropped her into a tie for fourth at 6 under, along with fellow Japanese golfer Minami Katsu, who succeeded where others struggled when going from 1-over-par to 6-under-par in just over four hours. In ahead of them both is American Andrea Lee, a former amateur world No. 1. Lee had a positive run along Rest Bay, hitting 67 to go 7-under-par and into third place. Fellow American, Megan Khang, added her name to fourth on the leaderboard after making an impressive six birdies. British golfer Charley Hull is also tied for fourth. She started the day at level-par and hit her first shot of Saturday's round directly into a bunker. After escaping there to stay even, seven birdies followed in a barnstorming, crowd-pleasing rush which pulled Hull into contention. There was a moment when Hull, on the rise, walked to the 17th putting green, passing Yamashita and Takeda on the opposite fairway as they followed their tee shots on No. 3. Yamashita and Takeda didn't see Hull but they will have heard the noise when she and others made big shots. The wind did not just carry the kite surfers out into the Bristol Channel with its seagulls, it carried the cheers for birdies too. Yamashita did her best to block it out. It is not personal, you can see that in the way the athletes embrace each other at the end of each match, but they all want what she herself does not yet have. 'I just kind of enjoy chasing. It's quite fun. I like it. It's more fun that way,' Hull, also awaiting her first major win, said. 'I like hunting someone down.' The six players within three shots of the leader know if they can ride out the rain and pressure, they have a big opportunity to do something incredible. 'Tomorrow I'll be focused on one shot at a time,' Yamashita smiled. 'That's how I'll play my best golf.' Come Sunday night she wants to be putting last and placing first. It will taste a lot sweeter than her vanilla-icing birthday cake. (Top photo of Charley Hull: Luke Walker / Getty Images)

AC Milan, Man Utd Get Bad News as PSG Intend to Keep 18 Goal Scorer This Summer

Gonçalo Ramos' future at PSG was uncertain, with transfer rumors continuing to circulate the Portuguese striker this summer. However, it appears as though he might remain in the French capital. He finished the 2024-25 season with 18 goals and six assists in 41 appearances, but it's unclear if that will secure his spot in Paris. Last May, CaughtOffside noted growing interest in Ramos, with a potential deal still on the table. Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Napoli, and Juventus have all been keeping an eye on him. Meanwhile, Arsenal and Manchester United are also looking to strengthen their attacking options this summer. Journalist Graeme Bailey previously reported that Manchester United was allowed to sign the 24-year-old, as PSG appears willing to let him go. Ramos has reportedly also held talks with clubs in Europe and Saudi Arabia. PSG intend to keep AC Milan, Man Utd targetAmid the rumors linking him away from PSG, journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that AC Milan made a serious move to sign Ramos, but PSG's asking price is too steep. The French club are set on keeping the striker this summer despite the interest from other sides. This new information from Tavolieri comes after he reported that AC Milan were seriously considering Ramos as a top target. Milan officials had already in talks with the Portuguese striker's representatives to explore a potential deal. Nonetheless, that doesn't seem like it will happen.

Harry Kane and Joshua Kimmich impressed with Luis Diaz's Bayern Munich debut

New Bayern Munich signing Luis Diaz has already had a chance to make his first appearance for his Bundesliga club. The former Liverpool attacker logged 45 minutes as a substitute in Bayern's Saturday pre-season friendly against Olympique Lyon. It did not take long for the 28-year-old to get his name on the scoresheet. Diaz recorded an assist on Michael Olise's 1-1 in the 53rd minute by drawing a penalty. Diaz himself produced three efforts on goal. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund, lead striker Harry Kane, and squad vice captain Joshua Kimmich have had a chance to comment on the Colombian. Freund found himself answering questions about whether – in light of Diaz's work on the wing opposite the ultra-talented Michael Olise – whether Bayern have finally found a new version of the famous Arjen Robben-Franck Ribbery partnership 'He looked very fresh,' Freund remarked in the mixed zone. 'He got three big chances in. He's gotten stuck in well. From the very start, one's sensed his joy. He's here to have fun. His interest in FC Bayern is noticeable. 'He's a very intense and industrious player,' Freund continued. 'He's very mature and speedy. He's an absolute team player who's very dangerous in front of goal. We can expect lots of scorer points [goals and assists] from him. 'Regardless of whom we talked about him with at Liverpool, everyone agreed he was an absolute team player,' Freund concluded. 'He fits the profile of the player we're looking for.' 'We always say, 'don't believe the hype or the drama',' Freund later stated when asked about a potential 'Robbery Revival'. 'Let's keep things grounded. Michael [Olise] has been here for a year. Luis Diaz is a top quality player who has achieved a lot. I'm looking forward to what's to come.' 'I've already noticed on the training pitch that he really likes football,' Kimmich noted in his own mixed zone interview. 'He always has a smile on his face. He likes to come to training irrespective of which team he's playing for. 'He really enjoys football and that's precisely what we need,' Kimmich continued. 'He likes to work even when it hurts. He has an intensity about him, though he could have scored today.' 'I think Thomas [Müller] had issues [helping integrating players],' Kimmich answered when asked – without Müller – who would be the leading figure helping to integrate Diaz into the team. 'We have a few who speak Spanish. I think it'll be fine. We'll get it done.' Diaz's former Premier League colleague Kane didn't think that Bayern would have to fall back on Spanish speakers, noting that four years spent at Liverpool had ensured that Diaz's English was 'okay'. Kane had more to add. 'I think he did well today,' Kane said. 'We're really going to need him this season. I'm happy to have him. As a striker, you enjoy playing with players like that. I thought he was very effective during his time at Liverpool. He can make the difference. I think he'll contribute here.' GGFN |
