Belgassem Haftar & UN Officials Discuss Libya's Reconstruction Strategy
On Wednesday, the Director General of the Libyan Reconstruction and Development Fund, Belgassem Haftar, met with a United Nations delegation to discuss enhanced cooperation on rebuilding efforts and sustainable development in Libya.
The UN delegation was led by Georgette Gagnon, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya.
During the talks, Haftar reaffirmed the fund's full commitment to transparency, efficiency, and accountability in executing development programs across the country.
He emphasized that the fund's work is grounded in clear principles, focused on rebuilding critical infrastructure, restoring basic services, and supporting the empowerment of local communities.
The meeting was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen coordination between the Libyan Reconstruction and Development Fund and the UN system, particularly in areas hardest hit by conflict and natural disasters. A key focus was the recovery of regions affected by Storm Daniel, which devastated parts of eastern Libya in September 2023.
Haftar and the UN team discussed ways to improve field coordination, enhance technical partnerships, and expand data-sharing mechanisms to better respond to both immediate humanitarian needs and long-term development priorities. Haftar also presented the fund's strategic roadmap and ongoing projects in multiple Libyan cities, outlining how these initiatives are designed to support local resilience and national stability.

123 Bangladeshi Migrants Repatriated from Libya
The Embassy of Bangladesh in Libya has successfully facilitated the safe repatriation of 123 distressed Bangladeshi migrants from Tripoli, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Among the repatriated migrants, 23 were reported to be in poor health. Most had been staying irregularly in Tripoli and surrounding cities without valid documentation or visas. Securing exit permits for the migrants posed a significant challenge, as many lacked passports or legal residency. However, under the leadership of the Honourable Ambassador, embassy officials held several meetings with Libya's Ministry of Interior and Immigration Department to obtain necessary approvals. The embassy extended its best wishes to the returnees for a safe journey and full recovery. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to assisting Bangladeshi nationals in Libya and continuing cooperation with Libyan authorities and international partners. UN Calls for National Effort to Confront Hate Speech in Libya
The United Nations Secretary-General's Special Representative for Libya, Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, warned that hate speech is becoming a serious obstacle to national unity and peace efforts. Her statement, issued Wednesday on the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, called for immediate and coordinated efforts to confront divisive rhetoric across Libya. Tetteh described hate speech as a direct threat to the country's stability, particularly in the context of Libya's fragile security and political polarization.
