Nick Castellanos home runs at bad times: A timeline of the meme that won't quit
It's unfortunate, but it's truly the eeriest: Nick Castellanos, for whatever reason, hits home runs at some of the most inopportune times.
He's hit them on days when someone mega famous has died. He's unintentionally interrupted somber speeches on air (including the original "and there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos" moment that became a meme).
It's gotten to the point where people are actually betting money on Castellanos going yard on days when big news breaks. So as we keep all of that in mind, here's a look at a timeline of those big home runs at eerie moments:
August 2020: The infamous Thom Brennaman incident
After the then-Cincinnati Reds announcer dropped a homophobic slur that was picked up on MLBTV, Castellanos interrupted his apology:
July 2021: He homered during a somber on-air moment involving Royals announcers
Everyone noticed this one:
March 2022: He won a game during a serious discussion on a Blue Jays broadcast
May 2022: He homered during a serious Memorial Day discussion
October 2023: He hit a dinger while the Phillies broadcast talked about Charlie Manuel
This just doesn't stop!
June 2024: He homered the day Willie Mays died
This has shifted from "interrupting on-air moments" to "homers on the day something big happens."
July 2024: Castellanos homers hours after Joe Biden drops out of the presidential race
And you wonder why people bet on it!
April 2025: He homers right after Alex Ovechkin broke the NHL record for career goals
Can't stop, won't stop.

Jac Caglianone Delivers Clear Response to Patrick Mahomes' Appearance at Royals Game
Jac Caglianone Delivers Clear Response to Patrick Mahomes' Appearance at Royals Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Royals may have dropped Tuesday night's game 10-2 to the New York Yankees, but it was a night rookie Jac Caglianone won't soon forget. Advertisement Making his home debut in front of 30,017 fans at Kauffman Stadium, the 22-year-old made his presence felt. Caglianone drove in one of the Royals' runs and continued his recent hot streak, collecting his sixth hit in his last 12 at-bats and extending his hitting streak to three games. He knocked in a run in the second inning with a groundout to second base, scoring Vinnie Pasquantino. He later singled to right field in the ninth for his lone hit of the night. After the game, Caglianone spoke with the media. McKenzie Nelson, who covers the Royals, shared the rookie's comment about a very special guest in the crowd: 'I had to do something cool…' That 'something cool' was for none other than Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, who was seated near the field. Advertisement Reflecting on his home debut, Caglianone added: 'Really cool. To kinda hear the crowd react the way they did. A super warm welcome. I'm thankful for everybody that was part of it.' Then came a moment of humor when he brought up seeing Mahomes in the stands: 'It was pretty cool to see Pat Mahomes there.' With a grin, he admitted: 'My second-to-last AB, I just kinda looked over and kinda smiled, and I was like, all right, I got to do something cool ... then I rolled over.' Former Florida Gators first baseman Jac Branscombe-Imagn Images The Royals and Yankees continue their three-game set Wednesday before Kansas City welcomes the Oakland Athletics to town this weekend. Advertisement Through 67 games, Kansas City sits at 34-33, fourth in the American League Central and 9.5 games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers. The call-up of Caglianone was meant to provide an offensive spark for a team struggling to score. The Royals rank 28th in MLB in runs per game at just 3.4. Mom Thinks She's Safe at Home Playing With Kids—Then Hears Terrifying Sound
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A mom of two who had set out to capture a cute moment with her daughter on camera ended up recording something altogether more unsettling. Arley Herrema, from Arlington, Texas, was at home with her 3-year-old daughter Ruby Jo and 7-month-old son Hayes when she inadvertently recorded the sound of something that left all three of them terrified. "My daughter was being cute playing hairdresser, so I wanted to capture the moment," Herrema told Newsweek. What she ended up filming instead was their reaction to the sound of a plane flying low over their home. Herrema posted the footage of their reaction to the sound to her TikTok @arleyherrema. Both Herrema and her daughter appear alarmed and confused by the noise, while her son starts to cry in the immediate aftermath. "I was terrified when I heard the noise. I did not know what it was initially," Herrema said. "Honestly, I thought it was a bomb at first, but then my rational thinking kicked in and realized it was a plane." It turned out what Herrema and her kids had heard was actually a "flyover" to mark Memorial Day. "We live close to the Rangers [baseball] stadium [at Globe Life Field] and they were playing a game that day," she said. Thankfully, Herrema said both Ruby Jo and Hayes calmed down "pretty quickly" after the initial incident, and she then decided it was something worth sharing to social media. She could never have predicted what would happen next. "I thought it was funny after the fact and crazy that I caught it on camera," Herrema said. "I had no idea it would spark such a political debate in the comments!" At the time of writing, Herrema's video has been watched over 3.8 million times. Many of those commenting on the clip have been eager to draw comparisons with what is happening in Gaza. "Imagine the kids in Palestine," the top comment on the video reads. "Now imagine all those babies in Palestine hearing that followed by explosions and carnage all around," a second wrote. A third commented: "Poor Palestinian children gotta go through that everyday multiple times a day and see worse and they know that sound is 100 percent a threat and not just a plane." Herrema said she had similar thoughts in the aftermath of her family's experience. "I had that thought as well when it happened and how scary it is for children and mothers who are being directly impacted by war," she added. "I didn't however just think of one side or even the current situation happening in the world, but any and everyone directly impacted by war past or present." That moment of reflection on the terrifying consequences of military conflict left her feeling a sense of gratitude for where Herrema and her family are in the world. "Definitely makes you grateful to live in the U.S.A.," she said. Figures published by the U.N., based on data from the Gaza Health Ministry, as of June 18, 2025, show that 55,637 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict. Those from March 22, 2025, gleaned from the same source, indicate 15,613 Palestinian children have died. The U.N. says Israeli media sources suggest there have been over 1,200 Israeli fatalities. At least 33 children are thought to have died. The Israeli figures include the fatalities from Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023.

Former Blue Jays Reliever Makes Next Career Move
Former Blue Jays Reliever Makes Next Career Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If former Toronto Blue Jays reliever Richard Lovelady makes it back to a big-league mound this summer, we don't expect he'll do so in a Minnesota Twins uniform. Advertisement FanSided's Robert Murray reported on Wednesday afternoon that Lovelady exercised the June 15 opt-out clause in his minor-league contract. The 29-year-old recorded a 1.31 ERA, six saves, and a 22-7 K-BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings at Triple-A St. Paul. Lovelady is now a free agent, and we expect at least one team to hone in on a veteran pitcher with extensive major-league experience. Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Richard LoveladyDan Hamilton-Imagn Images Murray called it a "surprise" that the Twins never promoted Lovelady. Minnesota entered Wednesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds at 36-36 and a game back in the AL Wild Card standings. Hitting the open road is nothing new for Lovelady, who has pitched for five MLB teams since his 2019 debut with the Kansas City Royals. Lovelady allowed four runs and two walks in 1 2/3 innings with the Blue Jays earlier this year. Advertisement Lovelady owns a 5.26 ERA in 101 career innings for the Royals, Blue Jays, Athletics, Chicago Cubs, and Tampa Bay Rays. We'll see if the Rays bring Lovelady back after he posted a 3.77 ERA in 28 2/3 innings last season.
