Vachana Mantapa construction to begin shortly in Kalaburagi: Minister

The Hindu30-04-2025

Government of Karnataka will construct a 'Vachana Mantapa' in Kalaburagi to spread the universal message of 12th century social reformer Basavanna and the vachana movement, Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil announced during the Basava Jayanti celebrations in Kalaburagi on April 30.
He made the announcement after paying floral tribute to the equestrian statue of Basaveshwara at Jagat Circle in Kalaburagi.
The event was organised jointly by the district administration, Kalaburagi City Corporation, Department of Kannada and Culture, and the Basava Jayanti Celebration Committee.
'The project was included in the 2024–25 State budget. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed us to commence construction work immediately. The district administration is preparing the blueprint,' he said.
Highlighting the lifelong efforts of Basavanna and other sharanas of the 12th century to build a casteless and equitable society, the Minister said that the essence of the Sharana movement, rooted in compassion and equality for all beings and the transformative power of vachanas, should be passed on to future generations.
'We must preserve and nurture the practice of Ishta Linga worship and the cultural heritage of Basava philosophy,' he said.
Speaking on the inclusivity of Basava's ideology, Karnataka State Policy and Planning Commission Vice-Chairperson B.R. Patil remarked that even those who do not wear the Ishta Linga can be followers of Basavanna.
'Wearing the Linga is not a prerequisite for being Basavanna's follower. Even those who do not wear it can follow his teachings. Our Lingayat identity stemmed from a time when people from marginalised communities adopted the linga as a symbol of spiritual equality,' he said.
Commending the Dalit Sangharsha Samit for its efforts to promote Buddha-Basava-Ambedkar philosophy across Karnataka, he emphasised the importance of upholding ideas over idolising individuals.
'Basavanna's social revolution stemmed from embracing inter-caste marriage and the dignity of labour. We must glorify ideas, not individuals — be it Basavanna or Ambedkar. If we glorify only individuals, the ideas will fade,' he cautioned.
MLA and Jayanti Committee Chairperson M.Y. Patil called for embracing the Kayaka Sharanas who have drifted away, reiterating Basavanna's revolutionary role in advocating inter-caste harmony and establishing an egalitarian society. He also noted that Basava Jayanti had evolved from mere processions to ideologically rich celebrations since the rediscovery of vachana literature.
Retired professor Dr. Durgadas, delivering a lecture, identified Kalyana Karnataka as Basavanna's land of action, praising the vachanas for their accessibility and spiritual depth. He portrayed Basavanna as a humanitarian who transcended orthodoxy and championed rational thought from a young age.
Recognition for outstanding individuals
Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner B. Fouzya Taranum was felicitated for winning the Election Commission of India's award for best district election officer while the family of Mohan Kumar from Dora Jambga village was honoured as he secured the 982nd rank in the UPSC exams.
Sarangadhara Deshikendra Mahaswamiji of Sarangamath hoisted the Shatsthala flag, and blessed the event and the gathering.
MLA Allamaprabhu Patil presided over the event. MLCs B.G. Patil, Tippannappa Kamakanoor and Shashil G. Namoshi, City Police Commissioner S.D. Sharannappa, Superintendent of Police Addoor Srinivasalu and leaders from Lingayat community were among the participants.

Sri Ram Sene seeks ban on SDPI, blames Kerala activists for violence in Mangaluru

Sri Ram Sene founder Pramod Mutalik has said that SDPI activists are engaged in communally violent acts and demanded a ban on the organisation. 'We have clear evidence to show that SDPI activists from Kerala are responsible for communal violence in Mangaluru and other places. They need to be arrested. SDPI should be banned, like the PFI,' he said. He was speaking to reporters here on Sunday. He said that caste-based discrimination is deep-rooted and is nearly impossible to eliminate. 'Basavanna fought all his life to eradicate the caste system and establish a new social order. But we have confined him to a caste and we take pride in following the caste system. We are also limiting B.R. Ambedkar to a particular caste. This is deplorable. We should forget all our caste distinctions and announce that we are proud Hindus,' he said. He urged the people not to donate to maths and other Hindu religious institutions. 'They are all well developed. They do not need your support. It is Hindu activists like us who need your support. Most of our resources are spent in fighting cases,' he said. He said that the Love Jihad prevention helpline has received over 5,000 calls in one year. 'We have resolved over 90% of the cases and provided solace to girls. Our activists trace address and phone numbers of Muslim boys who lure girls. They find the girls, convince them of the conspiracy and succeed in reuniting them with their parents,' he said. 'We are not opposed to genuine love. But we will not tolerate fake love and attempts to convert innocent Hindu girls to Islam with false promises,' he said. He said that he is confident that the evil practice of Love Jihad will end soon and the helpline will be closed. Sri Ram Sene South India coordinator Sundaresh Naregal said that the helpline is facing several challenges like logistics, funding and legal problems. All those who claim to be Hindutva leaders do not send their children for protests and agitations. Ordinary activists like us are left to fend for ourselves. Helpline coordinator Basavaraj Goudar said that Sri Ram Sene activists face several problems in battling Love Jihad incidents. Police do not cooperate at all times. Several times, the girls are brainwashed. However, 'we have succeeded in battling all such problems,' he said.

Priyank Kharge expresses gratitude to Kalaburagi citizens for supporting him against BJP attacks

In a press statement issued on Saturday, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge thanked citizens of Kalaburagi and supporters across the region for standing in solidarity with him in the wake of personal attacks by BJP leaders. Responding to the derogatory remarks recently made by Leader of Opposition int he Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy and others, Mr. Priyank said that the people of Kalaburagi had given a fitting and dignified reply through their massive mobilisation and intellectual resistance. 'The conscious citizens of Kalaburagi, deeply rooted in the philosophy of Basavanna and B.R. Ambedkar have once again reaffirmed their belief in democracy and the Constitution,' Mr. Priyank stated, adding that their overwhelming support had not only strengthened his resolve but also silenced those resorting to personal and ideological attacks. Reflecting on the historical and intellectual legacy of Kalyana Karnataka, Mr. Priyank remarked that the region had been a cradle of progressive thought since the days of the Vachana movement, and would never allow the 'regressive and polluted ideology' of the RSS and the BJP to take root. 'The BJP's attempt to undermine me through personal slander reflects its inability to counter me politically, ideologically, or intellectually. They have launched these attacks because I have fearlessly exposed their failures and corruption,' he said. 'I am not alone. With me are thousands who follow the path of Ambedkar and Basavanna. This spiritual and ideological army gives me the strength and confidence to continue the fight against injustice,' Mr. Priyank said. Reaffirming his commitment to the marginalised, the Minister pledged to carry forward his mission to uplift the underprivileged and continue his efforts to dismantle social inequality. 'Basavanna gives me ideological strength, Babasaheb provides moral strength, and your support gives me the soul force I need. Together, we will confront and defeat the dangerous rise of communal and casteist forces,' he concluded.

Decode Politics: In Karnataka, why Jangama sub-caste row has cast a shadow on SC survey

Amid the ongoing survey of the Dalit sub-castes in Karnataka being carried out by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government, a controversy has erupted over the alleged inclusion of a section of Jangama Lingayats in the Beda Jangama and Budaga Jangama groups of the Scheduled Castes (SCs) in the state. The row has stemmed from allegations that many Jangama Lingayats — a sub-caste of the dominant Lingayat community listed in the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) category — were allegedly issued 'fake SC caste certificates' in parts of Karnataka because of sharing a common name with the Beda Jangama or Budaga Jangama sub-castes of the SCs, which allegedly resulted in increase in the numbers of the latter groups. What is the SC survey? The ongoing survey of the SC sub-castes in Karnataka, which is also looking into their socio-economic status, is based on the recommendations of Justice Nagamohan Das Commission, which was constituted by the Siddaramaiah government last November to determine internal reservations among the SC groups, which are together entitled to 15% quota. The SC internal survey is based on the Commission's interim report submitted to the government last month, which found that there was no empirical data on various Dalit sub-castes including the SC(left), SC(right), touchable castes and others. Dalits account for 19% population of Karnataka, which is currently estimated to be around 6.5 crore. The Commission is supervising the state-wide survey of the SC sub-castes that started on May 5. Although it was slated to end on May 25, its deadline was extended till May 29 as the enumeration exercise was hampered by heavy rains in some parts of the state. How did the row flare up? On May 20, Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, who belongs to the Dalit community, raked up the issue, asking the Siddaramaiah government publicly how the numbers of Beda Jangama and Budaga Jangama have now shot up and that the inclusion of Lingayat Jangamas in the SC sub-castes would be against the interests of Dalits. Kharge's criticism came at a public rally held at Hospet in Vijayanagar district to mark the second anniversary of the Congress government in the state. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar were also present at the event. Earlier, on April 13, Karnataka minister and Dalit leader K H Muniyappa had written to Siddaramaiah about the 'significant increase' in the number of Beda Jangama and Budaga Jangama groups in an 'irregular manner', urging the government to ensure that Jangamas from the Veerashaiva Lingayat community are not included in the SC category during the survey. He also alleged that many Lingayat Jangamas 'have availed fake caste certificates to claim reservation benefits as Beda Jangama and Budaga Janagama'. Who are Jangamas? Jangama refers to a priest class in both the Lingayat and SC communities. According to the Chinnappa Reddy Commission report submitted to the state government in 1990, Lingayat Jangamas, which have sub-groups including Aradhya, Jangama, Matapathi and Veerashaiva, numbered around 8.14 lakh or 2.25% of the then state population. They are vegetarian and officiate as priests in the ceremonies of Lingayats. The Lingayat community is listed in the 3B OBC category in the state, which has been allotted 5% quota. Beda Jangama and Budaga Jangamas are part of the SCs and are Telugu-speaking nomadic groups concentrated mainly in Karnataka districts adjoining Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Considered as priests of the Holeya and Madiga groups, both SC 'untouchables', they are non-vegetarians, who are said to be traditionally involved in 'soothsaying and seeking alms'. According to writer-researcher Dasanur Kusanna, Beda Jangama and Budaga Jangama are 'complimentary synonymous' terms of the same group as 'both of them are interdependent ethno-identities'. The 1961 census pegged the population of these two communities at 5,141, which rose to 1.17 lakh in 2011. The socio-economic and educational survey or caste survey – conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes (KSCBC) in 2015 during Siddaramaiah's first tenure as the CM – has estimated the populations of Beda Jangama and Budaga Jangama to be 3.82 lakh and 28,000 respectively. What is Jangama conundrum? The issue of various caste groups sharing the Jangama name was even highlighted by the 19th century British anthropologist Edgar Thurston, who wrote, 'Strictly speaking, a Jangam is a priest to the religious sect of Lingayats, but the term is frequently loosely applied to any Lingayat…. Jangams proper are said to be of two classes, Pattadikaris, who have a definite headquarters, and Charamurtis, who go from village to village, preaching the principles of the Lingayat sect. Many Jangams are priests to Sudras who are not Lingayats.' As per the 2015 caste survey, the population of Lingayat Jangamas was about 1.7 lakh. What are Dalit leaders' concerns? Beda Jangamas are listed under Madigas, an SC (left) group. There have been concerns among the Madiga leaders such as Muniyappa that the inclusion of Lingayat Jangamas in the SC groups would reflect 'wrong numbers' of these most backward of the Dalit sub-castes in the current SC survey. They also argue that including the relatively well off Lingayat Jangamas in the SC list would project a 'wrong picture' of Madigas as the survey is also assessing their socio-economic status. Madigas, the largest SC (left) group, number around 18 lakh in the state. SC (right) leaders like Kharge have opposed the inclusion of Lingayat Jangamas as they fear that the SC (right) numbers would decrease in the survey, which would adversely impact the extent of sub-quotas to be allotted to them. When contacted for his reaction, Justice Nagamohan Das told The Indian Express that the Commission was aware of the issue. 'Now, I cannot disclose (how the issue will be addressed). We are researching that. We have limited powers. Based on that, we will act,' he said.
