Fifth charge for Singaporean driver after six-vehicle Tampines crash that killed two
According to The Straits Times, Syafie was today charged in Singapore's State Courts with dangerous driving that caused grievous hurt to two other motorists involved in the incident — Chia Tong Chai, 65, and Muhammad Azril Mahmood, 49.
The crash, which occurred at a junction in Tampines on April 22, killed 17-year-old Temasek Junior College student Afifah Munirah Muhammad Azril and 57-year-old senior technician Norzihan Juwahib.
According to news reports, Syafie is alleged to have ignored a red light, causing a chain-reaction crash that ultimately involved a van and a minibus.
In addition to the two who died, three other adults and two 11-year-old boys were injured in the incident.
Syafie, who has been out on bail of S$30,000 (RM98,800) since April, has reportedly been ordered to stay away from prosecution witnesses and regularly report to investigators.
The prosecution has stated that he poses a flight risk due to the seriousness of the charges.
His next court appearance is set for June 26, with three of the five charges to be pursued at trial, while the other two will be taken into consideration during sentencing.

Lawyer jailed for drunk-driving away from crash
A Jersey defence lawyer has been jailed for seven months for admitting he drunkenly drove away from a crash. The island's Magistrates' Court heard how David Steenson, 57, drove his Jaguar for more than a mile from the accident on La Route de St Jean with his front wheel scraping along the road at a 90-degree angle. The collision with a white mini cooper happened on 16 May, 10 days after Steenson finished a community service sentence for assaulting a taxi driver, an incident from 2024 also involving alcohol. Steenson previously admitted drink-driving, failing to stop and report an accident and two counts of dangerous driving. His lawyer told the court the advocate was "deeply ashamed". He added the defendant's professional achievements meant he had further to fall. The court heard the car Steenson crashed into was being driven by a woman who was taking her daughter home from a dance event. Steenson had the "drunken, impaired belief" that he had hit a pavement instead of another car, it was told. The woman suffered whiplash and has struggled to sleep since the collision. Steenson also told police he had not been drinking moments before he failed a roadside breathalyser test. He registered 82mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, more than double the local limit (35mcg/100ml). He said they were made more serious because Steenson had only just finished his previous sentence and, as a lawyer, he should have been aware of the risks of reoffending. Steenson was also suspended from driving for 30 months and, since the incident, has sought professional help for his relationship with alcohol. After Steenson pleaded guilty for common assault in December 2024, the Royal Court suspended him from legal practice for three months. Steenson's defence lawyer told the court this most recent sentence would not be the end of his punishment as it had done "enormous damage" to his career and reputation. 5 foreign women suspected of trafficking 27kg of cocaine nabbed in Changi Airport
SINGAPORE – Five foreign women aged between 21 and 48 were arrested for suspected drug trafficking offences on July 29 in the Changi Airport Terminal 4 transit area. The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said on July 31 that officers found about 26.9kg of cocaine and 10g of cannabis in the luggage belonging to two of the women, aged 21 and 32. CNB officers arrested the two women when they were exchanging suitcases. Cocaine was later found hidden in stuffed toys in the suitcases. The arrest was made after an exchange of intelligence between CNB and the Narcotics Bureau of the Hong Kong Police Force.
