
Anthem Vinyl offering 'interesting new approach' to vinyl pressing for artists
Born out of a shared love for vinyl and a deep respect for its craft, Anthem Vinyl was founded in 2024 by a team of passionate music industry and business professionals.
Located just 30 minutes from Dublin, in Clane, County Kildare, the new pressing plant is embracing new technology, sustainability, and accessibility, ensuring that artists and fans can experience vinyl at its best.
'Obviously, a lot of Irish artists would be keen to have their physical music produced here in Ireland,' Anthem Vinyl founder Brian Kenny told the Irish Mirror.
'It's also very accessible, they can come here, visit the plant. We offer that anyone who's getting records pressed can come in and see it getting pressed, shoot some social content.
'We're building out a media room here where, if they want to shoot their own social media content in the room, listen to it on the Hi Fi, and sign copies of it.'
Brian says by pressing locally in Ireland, clients benefit from faster lead times and lower shipping costs thanks to Ireland's unique position within the EU.
'It's that unique access that we have to the global market. Even though we will do everything we can to support Irish acts, we don't want to create the impression we're only supporting Irish acts either.'
'Because the Irish industry is not big enough to sustain this business or any pressing plant,' he added.
'It's probably mostly led by artists not having to go far afield, Irish in particular, to get their pressings.
'But we also think we can tick a box for UK and European-based artists to get their product out to the States in particular, or UK artists to get their products into mainland Europe.'
With the addition of traditional pressing services, Anthem has also introduced Smart Vinyl, a forward-thinking innovation that pairs physical records with the digital world.
'It's a very early product. Declan O'Rourke's album was done; he's an early adopter of it,' he shared.
'It gives a great new level of engagement between an artist and a fan. That they have this content that's utterly unique to that particular album, that they bought that vinyl record.
'Then the artist, in turn, can have visibility of fans that are buying records and binder releases. And there's opportunities there for early concert ticket access or early new release access to fans that are showing loyalties to them. It's a very interesting kind of new approach to it.'

Certa expands to 25 HVO sites as demand for renewable fuel soars
Certa, which is part of DCC, is expanding to 25 HVO fuel sites across Ireland as it responds to demand from diesel drivers who are choosing the renewable fuel to reduce their carbon emissions. Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is produced from waste plant matter and can be used as a direct replacement for diesel without any need for engine modifications to help motorists lower their carbon emissions by up to 90%. The fuel is distinguished by a pink nozzle to stand out from the traditional black diesel and green petrol nozzles at fuel stations. Certa noted that demand for HVO is being driven by diesel drivers who want to "go green" but who have put off switching to an electric vehicle for a variety of reasons. These reasons include the cost of buying an EV, the lack of charging infrastructure across the country, and not having their own driveway or off-street parking where they can install a home charger. Certa's new HVO fuel site in Portlaoise, which opens to the public this week, is the 25th such site to open over the past 18 months across 17 counties. The company opened the country's first fully fledged HVO fuel station in Liffey Valley in Dublin in late 2023 at a cost of €1m. 15 of the 25 HVO fuel sites that Certa currently operates have opened over the past eight months and the company has plans to open five more HVO fuel sites over the coming months. Orla Stevens, Managing Director at Certa Ireland, said the company continues to lead the way in making HVO more widely available to motorists across Ireland. "Our goal is to make it easy for motorists to transition to HVO as a renewable alternative to diesel to help them to lower their carbon emissions," she said. Ms Stevens noted that diesel and petrol cars accounts for 84% of the cars on Irish roads, while 17% of all new cars sold in Ireland so far this year were diesel. "The demand for HVO has grown as we have opened each new HVO fuel site across our network and our plan is to complete the upgrading of our entire network into next year as we continue our journey towards a net zero future," she stated. The Certa and Emo forecourts selling HVO include Liffey Valley, Finglas (Clearwater), Dundrum, Clarehall, Tallaght and Greenogue in Dublin; Lee Tunnel in Cork, Corofin in Co Clare, Letterkenny in Co Donegal, Ballinasloe in Co Galway, Maynooth in Co Kildare, Killarney in Co Kerry, Portlaoise in Co Laois, Moyne in Co Longford, Dundalk in Co Louth, Ballyhaunis in Co Mayo, Trim in Co Meath, Kilcormac in Co Offaly, Clonmel in Co Tipperary, Waterford city, Athlone and Mullingar in Co Westmeath, and Castlebridge, Gorey and Wexford town in Co Wexford.

Hefty up-front costs are stopping households paying for energy efficient upgrades
COST IS ONE of the main barriers for people trying to make their home more energy-efficient. That's according to a new report from the National Economic and Social Council that looked at how a just transition could be achieved for all. The Council said it recognises that the global factors have contributed to the high energy costs, but 'nonetheless, action is required'. Not all low-income households or community groups have equitable access to energy efficiency solutions and microgeneration technologies like solar panels, despite the availability of grants. Grants may not fully cover costs for some, and others may be excluded from targeted supports. Furthermore, the report said the government must take a 'holistic' approach if it is to end energy poverty. Historically, energy prices in Ireland have been higher than the European average, in part due to geographical location, the small size of the Irish market, and low population density. Households with higher energy needs, which include families with children, people with disabilities and older people, are more susceptible to energy poverty. Women, in particular lone parents and older women, are also especially affected due to structural inequalities in income distribution, socio-economic status and the gender care gap. Advertisement Enhanced monitoring and data analytics are needed to track how vulnerable groups are affected, and specific energy poverty policies should be integrated with energy transition goals. Up-front costs Changes that many people are already implementing, such as retrofitting, need to be scaled up, the Council said. This would involve reducing costs and simplifying processes. One person told the Council: I'd have a lot of renovation to do in my house, which would be hugely expensive. Cost would be a massive factor. Home energy 'assets' like heat pumps and batteries can provide flexibility, but benefits may not be equitable due to lifestyle or income differences, it said. One of the main barriers to a just transition is the high up-front cost. Many people won't make the investment because they either can't afford it or they're not convinced of the long-term savings. The report says this could lead to new challenges for those left behind during the transition phase. For example, the value of their property could drop over time as homes around them become more energy efficient. Vulnerabilities Transitioning to more clean energy can also leave people more vulnerable in some cases, as was seen during Storm Éowyn. Electricity was cut off and some people in energy-efficient homes were without a secondary heat source. Those with solar panels, EVs, and batteries couldn't use them for backup power because they couldn't disconnect from the grid without a changeover switch, and regulations were unclear.
