Nga Kor Ming demands apology over ‘white elephant' claims as MACC clears RM150 million MyKiosk project

Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Muhammad Yusry, FMT Text Size: As of July 2025, the occupancy rate for MyKiosk stood at 2,926 units (91.75 per cent), while MyKiosk 2.0 recorded an occupancy of 3,518 units (86.78 per cent). — Picture from Facebook/KPKT Kuala Lumpur: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming today called on critics to apologise to his ministry after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) found no criminal elements in the MyKiosk project. Nga said the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (KPKT) had taken proactive steps by inviting the MACC to investigate the project following various allegations labelling it a 'white elephant' and other claims of mismanagement. 'There were previously various allegations labelling this project a white elephant and so on. Because of that, the KPKT took the initiative to invite the MACC to investigate. 'When the MACC didn't come to us, we went to them and handed over all the documents for their review,' he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat. Nga said the MACC subsequently issued a statement confirming that there was no abuse of power, no criminal elements, and no signs of corruption related to the project. 'So to those who threw stones, don't hide your hands. On behalf of all the hardworking KPKT staff who have been tirelessly helping the people, I demand that those who made slanderous accusations apologise,' he said. Nga added that the MyKiosk initiative, which aims to provide standardised, low-cost business premises for small traders, remains part of the government's agenda to support grassroots entrepreneurs. In May, Parti Pribumi Bersatu information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz claimed that the MyKiosk project was wasteful and had turned into a white elephant. Selangor MCA Youth also lodged a complaint with the MACC, urging an investigation into the funding and implementation of the RM150 million MyKiosk project. Its chief, Tan Jie Sen, claimed that despite the large allocation, just over half of the kiosks were occupied. Nga said as of July 2025, the occupancy rate for MyKiosk stood at 2,926 units (91.75 per cent), while MyKiosk 2.0 recorded an occupancy of 3,518 units (86.78 per cent). * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: Over 2,000 school leaders comprising headmasters from across the nation attended the 29th Education Convention and 3rd Persatuan Guru Besar Malaysia (PGBM) Delegates Conference held at the Sabah International Convention Centre, here. The three-day convention aimed to facilitate knowledge sharing from the Ministry of Education sector to strengthen leadership in primary schools for implementing new education development policies and plans. Education Director-General Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad, in his opening address, pointed out the role of headmasters as leaders and drivers who must understand policies and implement them with full trust and integrity as proactive civil servants bringing school reforms to ensure children's rights to quality education are protected. 'When headmasters are at their respective schools, they come to work, not just go to work. They should bring waves of quality education to students, working with teacher organisations to focus especially on resolving literacy and numeracy issues,' he said. He noted that the Ministry of Education is preparing the Education Development Plan 2026-2035, which will be implemented at all levels including schools, with only strategic plans at ministry and department levels, while District Education Offices will prepare tactical plans and schools will handle operational plan implementation to be translated in classrooms. National PGBM President Marzilaini Muhamad said headmasters throughout Malaysia continuously strive to ensure excellent and effective leadership quality among school leaders through various approaches, smart sharing and jointly achieving government policies, particularly the new Education Development Plan. Meanwhile, Sabah PGBM President Datuk Nordin Mohd Taip said the convention, hosted by Sabah for the first time is a historic milestone as the largest gathering of school leaders ever held, achieving goals in advancing education through sharing ideas, experiences and solutions to various issues related to teacher welfare and school leadership. Key issues raised included the genuine grade promotion for headmasters from DG44 to DG48 and proposals to increase headmaster responsibility allowances from RM200 to RM500 and senior assistant allowances from RM60 to RM200, which were submitted to the government through the ministry. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Telegram founder warns France may label tech firms as criminal gangs

MOSCOW: Telegram founder Pavel Durov has raised concerns that French authorities could arbitrarily classify any technology company as a 'criminal gang' due to political motivations. His remarks followed accusations by Elon Musk's X platform, which claimed it was facing a politically driven criminal probe in France. X stated that the investigation jeopardizes user freedom of expression. Durov responded on the platform, saying, 'At this point, any tech company can be declared a 'criminal gang' in France.' He criticized the situation, adding, 'A decade of efforts to attract tech investment is being undone by a few bureaucrats advancing their careers and political agendas — at the expense of the French people.' The controversy stems from a recent investigation launched by the Paris prosecutor's office into X's alleged algorithm manipulation. The case has sparked debates over regulatory overreach and its impact on tech innovation in France. - Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti
