Manonmaniam Sundaranar University cancels exam after question paper leak

The Hindu27-05-2025
The Manonmaniam Sundaranar University administration found itself in a troublesome situation on Tuesday (May 27, 2025) when a question paper intended for third-year B. Com students was leaked at one of its affiliated colleges and subsequently circulated among students.
The examination to be held on Tuesday was cancelled and will now be conducted before May 31.
Sources in MSU said that a minimum of two senior professors are usually asked to set question papers for each undergraduate subject, and one of the papers is selected by the Controller of Examinations to be sent to a Chennai-based press for printing. After the printing is completed, it would be sent to the principals of the affiliated colleges, as they are the Chief Superintendents of Examinations, five days in advance.
After being set by the professors, the sixth-semester Industrial Law question paper, meant for B. Com third-year students, was printed in the press and shared with the principals of the affiliated colleges one week ago.
When the Controller of Examinations, MSU, U. Balasubramanian received information at around 11 p.m. on Monday (May 26) that the said question paper was leaked from an affiliated college, he discussed the development with Vice-Chancellor N. Chandrasekar, who immediately asked the Controller of Examination to cancel the exam on Tuesday and postpone it.
He also asked the Controller of Examinations to file a complaint with the police for a formal inquiry to identify the person responsible for the leak.
'I was informed about this development this (Tuesday) morning, and the colleges were asked not to conduct the Industrial Law examination on Tuesday. Moreover, the Secretary of Higher Education was also alerted about this issue. We have planned to conduct this examination before May 31 by setting three sets of fresh question papers. Meanwhile, the procedures for filing the complaint with the police have been initiated,' said J. Sacratees, Registrar, MSU.
Sources further said the culprit could be from one of the colleges and might have leaked the question paper with the sole motive of embarrassing the administration. 'Since the question papers would be under their custody for at least five days until the packet is opened on the morning of the examination, the police should investigate and expose the truth,' the sources added.

Who is Maulana Sajid Rashidi, slapped by SP workers over inappropriate remark on Dimple Yadav

As a video of Rashidi's comment began to circulate on social media, a case was registered against him at Vibhuti Khand police station in Lucknow, on a complaint by SP worker Pravesh Yadav. After the show aired, a group of Samajwadi Party workers slapped Maulana Rashidi at a TV set in Noida. UP police sources told ThePrint that SP workers who slapped Rashidi have been identified as Shyam Singh Bhati, national secretary of the SP Advocate Sabha; Mohit Nagar, district president of the SP student wing, Gautam Budhha Nagar; Prashant Bhati, state secretary of the party's student wing; and Kuldeep Bhati, an SP worker. Lucknow: Maulana Sajid Rashidi is no stranger to controversy. The Delhi-based president of the All India Imam Association has been in the news many times for making provocative statements, especially during TV debates. Now, Rashidi finds himself facing another political storm over an inappropriate comment he made about Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Dimple Yadav, who is also the wife of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. Speaking to ANI after the incident, Rashidi later defended his remarks. 'She (Dimple) didn't abide by Islamic beliefs while sitting in the mosque. Iqra Hasan's ears and nose are covered. On the other hand, there is Dimple Yadav … The question is, will Akhilesh Yadav file an FIR against the person who took this picture (of the mosque visit),' he said. 'I will also go to the police and submit the phone numbers from which I received threats. I will file a case against Akhilesh and Dimple Yadav because it is their workers who are sending threats,' he added. Reacting to the controversy, Dimple Yadav told reporters, 'It's good that an FIR was registered. It would have been better if they had protested when the incidents against women happened in Manipur. After Operation Sindoor, BJP leaders made indecent remarks against our armed forces officers. It would have been better if they had stood against it.' Following a police complaint by the TV news channel, a case has been registered at Noida's Sector 126 police station against Maulana Sajid Rashidi, Shyam Singh Bhati, Mohit Nagar and Kuldeep Bhati. Police are currently investigating the matter. At the time of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, he said he voted for the BJP to dispel fear among Muslims about supporting the party and to challenge the belief that Muslims don't support the BJP. BJP leader Amit Malviya even shared Rashidi's video online during the Delhi polls to claim that a large number of Muslims were supporting the BJP now. Rashidi later clarified that his real intention was to make the Muslim community politically independent. He also supported the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, calling it a revolutionary step to safeguard the rights of the Muslim community. He also accused those opposing the law of trying to provoke unrest and urged the government to check the properties of those opposing it. In response to the Pahalgam terror attack, he blamed Pakistan, saying its actions were tarnishing the image of Indian Muslims. He even said that, if necessary, he was ready to go to the border himself to teach Pakistan a lesson. In an interview with ANI in 2023, he made a controversial comment about 17th-century Maratha ruler Shivaji, downplaying his contributions. In 2023, he claimed that Mahmud of Ghazni was right to demolish the Somnath temple, alleging that 'wrong things' were happening there. He later apologised after a backlash and an FIR from the Somnath Trust. In 2024, he drew flak for comments made during a TV debate. Loni BJP MLA Nand Kishor Gurjar filed a complaint against him, accusing him of hurting the sentiments of Hindus. Back in 2022, Rashidi supported threats issued against then BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad. 35 stone crushers sealed near Ganga in Haridwar after high court order

Haridwar: A stone crushers sealing committee set up by the Haridwar district magistrate following a high court directive, sealed 35 units along the Ganga river in Haridwar and disconnected their electricity supply during sealing operations targeting 48 stone crushers on Friday. The matter came to light when Haridwar-based Matri Sadan, an ashram involved in environmental protection, approached the Nainital high court in 2017 regarding stone crushers operating within five kilometres of the Ganga river, from Raiwala to Bhogpur, raising concerns of rampant quarrying threatening the sustainability of the river. Although the Uttarakhand govt permitted the crushers to operate based on the law department's legal counsel, Matri Sadan contested this decision as "unlawful and unconstitutional" and filed another petition in the high court, which ultimately mandated the sealing of all 48 stone crushing units. They also alleged that the mining lobby could attack its seers and the govt should provide Matri Sadan security, which had been lifted earlier. District mining officer Kazim Raza told TOI, "We sealed 35 stone crushers on Friday and disconnected their electricity connections. We had closed their online portal earlier so they're unable to issue challans. The rest of the stone crushers will be sealed on Saturday." Brahmchari Sudhanand, a seer of Matri Sadan involved in the litigation, said, "All stone crushers lying within five kilometres of the Ganga and other rivers in the district should be closed, as they are the root cause of illegal mining in the rivers. We will put this demand before the court at the next hearing."
