Turkish, Italian, Libyan leaders discuss joint strategy to curb migration and support Libyan unity

On Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hosted a conference in Istanbul with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah to discuss migration, collaboration, and Libya's political stability.
According to a statement published by Meloni's office after the closed-door meeting, the three leaders addressed boosting collaboration in the Mediterranean region, beginning with migration management.
Meloni applauded the 'excellent results achieved' through partnership with Turkey on migration control, stating that the lessons learnt should be applied to strengthen the Libyan Government of National Unity's migration efforts, according to a statement released by her office.

According to a statement released by Erdogan's office, 'long-term and sustainable' solutions were required to eliminate the root cause of migration.
Libya is a major transit hub for migrants escaping war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. Drownings along the country's shore have been prevalent. In December, at least 61 migrants, including women and children, drowned off Zuwara on Libya's western coast.
The Italian prime minister also underlined Italy's commitment 'to Libya's stability, unity, and independence,' as well as its support for a political process led by Libya and assisted by the United Nations that would lead to elections.
According to the Turkish presidential statement, the three leaders will meet again to assess their conclusions after lower-level technical meetings.
Oil-rich Libya plunged into chaos after a NATO-backed uprising toppled and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. In the disarray that followed, the country split into rival administrations in the east and west, each backed by rogue militias and foreign governments.
Turkey has been allied with the Tripoli-based government in the west, but has recently taken steps to improve ties with the eastern-based government as well.
In 2019, Turkey reached an agreement with the Tripoli-based government which delineated maritime boundaries between Libya and Turkey, angering Greece and Cyprus which say the agreement infringes on their rights.

Gujarat HC grants relief to news anchor accused in defamation, atrocities case after complaint by senior Congress leader
The Gujarat High Court on Monday granted relief to an Ahmedabad-based news anchor in a case of defamation and atrocity, filed by Congress leader Dr Tushar Chaudhary, based on the assurance of the Additional Public Prosecutor that the journalist will be served a notice of 15 days in case the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest her. Justice Nirzar Desai was hearing the petition by Gopi Maniar-Ghanghar, anchor of Ahmedabad-based Nirbhay News Channel, for quashing and setting aside the FIR lodged at Tapi District, based on Chaudhary's complaint under Section 356 (Defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and various sections of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Chaudhary is the newly appointed Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in Gujarat Assembly. The court order stated, 'Public Prosecutor Hardik Dave has made a statement before this Court upon instructions received by the Nikita Shiroya (SC/ST Cell Tapi Vyara) that… the investigation is at very initial stage and therefore, it would serve the end of justice if this Court records the statement of learned Public Prosecutor that in case, during the course of investigation, if the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest the present applicant, she will be given a clear notice of fifteen days and upon receipt of the notice…' The court further said, 'The applicant would be at liberty to avail appropriate remedy so as to take remedial measure to seek relief against her proposed arrest. Such a period would start from the date of receipt of the notice by the present applicant.' Chaudhary's complaint is also against Jagdish Mehta, group editor of Rajkot-based Headlines News channel. Chaudhary has alleged that the journalists had defamed him and his deceased father, former Gujarat Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary. In the FIR, the Congress MLA from Khedbrahma has alleged that in a show aired on July 22 on Nirbhay News, Ghanghar made an objectionable statement against him. He said Mehta consented to the statements, which were 'defamatory for him and the entire tribal community'. Ghanghar's advocate Utkarsh Dave said, '…Ghanghar… was the interviewer, who does not have control over what the other person is going to say… We will proceed with legal remedy in case the notice for arrest is issued.'

Gurgaon: Showing how stakes have risen even in elections at the municipal level, a dozen BJP-backed councillors were taken to Nepal ahead of the poll to elect two deputies for the mayor of Manesar, which is scheduled for Tuesday. An Independent, Inderjit Kaur Yadav, was elected mayor. So, there is intense jockeying for influence over the deputies. The two positions for which polls will be held are those of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. Sources said the 12 councillors were flown off over the weekend to Pokhara and were accompanied by a senior BJP functionary, a loyalist of minister and Badshapur MLA Rao Narbir Singh. An unspecified number was sequestered in other cities within India, the sources added. According to party insiders, the councillors' group in Nepal was on its way back to the city on Monday and would reach either late night or early Tuesday morning. In case of the latter, they will directly go to the Manesar conference hall where voting is scheduled between 10.30am and 1.45pm. Sources in BJP said the strategy was a preventive measure against any last-minute poaching or crossvoting. "The risk of defections or councillors shifting loyalties under pressure is real. After the mayoral loss to an Independent candidate backed by Rao Inderjit Singh, we couldn't afford another setback," said a senior BJP functionary, referring to the tussle for influence between the Union minister and Gurgaon MP and Narbir. I am sure BJP candidates will get the seats". On rivalry with Rao Inderjit, Narbir said he is a senior BJP functionary and Union minister, and there are no such differences. Parties or netas protecting their flock against horse-trading by herding them into hotels and resorts at faraway places ahead of crucial events like a confidence motion or a trust vote, or breaking away to form a new party or joining another, is not uncommon. But that happens at the state or national levels. Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh have seen episodes of MLAs being flown to luxury resorts in Goa, Rajasthan, and even hotels in Gurgaon. During his power struggle with Ashok Gehlot, Congress's Sachin Pilot had led a group of MLAs to a hotel in Manesar. For Tuesday's poll in Manesar, during which councillors will vote to elect the two deputies to the mayor, both sides exuded confidence on their numbers. According to BJP sources, consensus has been reached on fielding Praveen Yadav, councillor from Ward 12, and Reema Deepak Chauhan, councillor from Ward 2, for the posts. The rival bloc has not publicly disclosed its candidates.
