Gujarat HC grants relief to news anchor accused in defamation, atrocities case after complaint by senior Congress leader
Justice Nirzar Desai was hearing the petition by Gopi Maniar-Ghanghar, anchor of Ahmedabad-based Nirbhay News Channel, for quashing and setting aside the FIR lodged at Tapi District, based on Chaudhary's complaint under Section 356 (Defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and various sections of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
Chaudhary is the newly appointed Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in Gujarat Assembly.
The court order stated, 'Public Prosecutor Hardik Dave has made a statement before this Court upon instructions received by the Dy.SP Nikita Shiroya (SC/ST Cell Tapi Vyara) that… the investigation is at very initial stage and therefore, it would serve the end of justice if this Court records the statement of learned Public Prosecutor that in case, during the course of investigation, if the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest the present applicant, she will be given a clear notice of fifteen days and upon receipt of the notice…'
The court further said, 'The applicant would be at liberty to avail appropriate remedy so as to take remedial measure to seek relief against her proposed arrest. Such a period would start from the date of receipt of the notice by the present applicant.'
Chaudhary's complaint is also against Jagdish Mehta, group editor of Rajkot-based Headlines News channel. Chaudhary has alleged that the journalists had defamed him and his deceased father, former Gujarat Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary.
In the FIR, the Congress MLA from Khedbrahma has alleged that in a show aired on July 22 on Nirbhay News, Ghanghar made an objectionable statement against him. He said Mehta consented to the statements, which were 'defamatory for him and the entire tribal community'.
Ghanghar's advocate Utkarsh Dave said, '…Ghanghar… was the interviewer, who does not have control over what the other person is going to say… We will proceed with legal remedy in case the notice for arrest is issued.'

Cop from Nilgiris jailed for abusing dog trainer by caste name
Coimbatore: A police constable attached to the Nelakottai police station in the Nilgiri district was arrested on Saturday for abusing a 33-year-old man using his caste name. The arrested cop is identified as S Marutha Vinayagam, a native of Tirunelveli. According to a police officer, S Sivagnanam, a dog trainer from Mayiladuthurai district, moved to Coimbatore in 2007 and was residing at Lakshmi Nagar at Bommanampalayam near Vadavalli. He was working at a kennel owned by Ravichandran at IOB Colony in the city. "In 2021, when Sivagnanam attended a dog show in Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar district, Ravichandran introduced him to Marutha Vinayagam. Subsequently, the cop asked Sivagnanam to train his dog for upcoming shows. Sivagnanam handled the cop's dog at the (dog) shows held in Coimbatore and Ooty from 2022 to 2024." a police officer said. According to the officer, Ravichandran bought two Kanni (breed) dogs from the police constable in 2024. Unsatisfied with the quality of dogs, Ravichandran attempted to return them to the cop, who refused to take them back, he said. "Ravichandran then gave the two dogs to his friends. When Marutha Vinayagam came to know about this, he quarreled with Ravichandran and visited his kennel in a drunken state on Friday and asked Sivagnanam to give him three dogs from the kennel," the officer said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Colombia (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo However, Sivagnanam replied that he could not give the dogs without his employer's knowledge. Irked by this, the cop abused Sivagnanam mentioning his caste name and threatened him before leaving the kennel, the officer said. "Later that day, Marutha Vinayagam sent abusive messages to Sivagnanam's friend Franklin, mentioning Sivagnanam's community name. He also insulted his superior police officers and claimed that no one could take action against him." the officer said. On Friday night, Sivagnanam lodged a complaint with the Vadavalli police, who registered a case against Marutha Vinayagam under section 296(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections 3(i)(s) and 3(2)(vii) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Marutha Vinayagam was arrested on Saturday and lodged in jail under judicial custody after producing him before a judicial magistrate. Further investigation is on. Dalit women survivors seek separate law for caste crimes
1 2 Madurai: Dalit women survivors of caste violence, especially murder of spouses, have emphasised their demand for a separate law to deal with crimes involving inter-caste love marriages or relationships. In several such cases, the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act may not be applicable, they said. At a programme organised by the dalit rights NGO, Evidence, in Madurai on Saturday, activist and survivor Kausalya said that even now, the state and central govts do not have any data on caste ('honour') killings. Her husband Shankar was murdered in a gruesome instance of caste violence in 2016. "When there is no separate law to deal with these cases, some of the accused named remain free. Every time a caste killing happens, I feel depressed and saddened. Recently, I reached out to the girl who was Kavin's lover as I knew the pain she must have been feeling," she added. When a woman is subjected to caste crimes directly or indirectly by physical or verbal means by her own family, she is often forced to toe their line due to fear. "Only when the perpetrator is from another caste and the victim is SC, can the SC/ST Act be invoked. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Write Better, Work Smarter With This Desktop App Grammarly Install Now Undo Convictions are also difficult to get. A separate law is the need of the hour," said A Kathir, executive director, Evidence. Two other survivors, Arulmozhi and Rekha, also shared their experiences of facing caste violence, and stressed how important it was for dalit women to stand together. Rekha said she is working hard and studying to complete engineering. They said mustering the courage to speak out against the violence is more important than worrying about what society thinks. A S Kumari, chairperson, state commission for women, stressed the need for women from marginalised backgrounds to speak out about crimes and issues they face or witness regularly. "In cases of domestic violence as well, we see many women coming forward to complain at police stations. But the husband comes out of jail in a while and his wife is subjected to abuse again, and stripped of freedom. We need stricter laws. Only when women come together, society can change," she said. Siddaramaiah lays foundation for new Congress office in Mysuru
Mysuru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday laid the foundation stone for a new Congress office in Mysuru. The CM laid the foundation stone for the new Congress office, officially named Indira Congress Bhavana, at the site of the party's existing office premises. He appealed to party workers to contribute towards the construction of the new office. "Even a contribution of Rs 500 can make a difference," he said, urging everyone to donate according to their capacity. He also asked them to ensure the construction of the building is completed within a year. During the event, party workers attempted to celebrate the CM's birthday by organising a cake-cutting, but he declined, stating, " I have never cut a cake and I won't do it now." He did, however, accept a felicitation from the workers at their request. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar later joined in the felicitation. Shortly after the foundation stone was laid, the CM left for Varuna. Shivakumar, in his address, described the upcoming building as "a temple for Congress workers and a guardian of democracy." He encouraged every party worker to contribute — even if it was just Rs 100 — towards the project. He also urged all Congress MLAs from Mysuru district to donate funds for the initiative.
