Germany Invests in Green Hydrogen in Morocco
The initiative, backed by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, is part of the Energy Transition Technologies Development Fund and aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based fertilizers while making food production more sustainable.
Under the agreement, Germany will provide a €30 million grant to a subsidiary of the Moroccan OCP Group, the world's largest phosphate producer.
The funds will support the construction of a green hydrogen production plant in an industrial zone south of Casablanca.
This facility will be powered by renewable energy from wind and solar farms and will convert green hydrogen into green ammonia, a crucial component for sustainable fertilizer production.
The project is part of Morocco's broader strategy to become a leader in green ammonia production, with the goal of attracting multi-billion-euro investments and meeting 2% of global ammonia demand in the coming years.
Joachim Flasbarth, Germany's State Secretary for Economic Cooperation and Development, emphasized that this investment marks a significant step toward Morocco's entry into the green hydrogen sector.
He highlighted that the partnership between Germany and Morocco sends a strong message about moving away from fossil fuel-dependent industries and advancing sustainable production methods.
Flasbarth also noted that green hydrogen cooperation offers multiple advantages, including value chain development for producing countries, energy security for Germany, and export opportunities for German technology companies specializing in hydrogen production.

Egypt, Germany discuss development finance, partnership priorities at Seville Conference
Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Rania Al-Mashat, met with her new German counterpart, Reem Alabali-Radovan, on Tuesday to discuss strengthening partnership priorities, expanding development finance, and advancing debt-for-development swaps. The meeting took place during the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (Ff4D) in Seville, where a high-level Egyptian delegation is being led by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. The ministers emphasised the conference's importance in advancing global efforts to restructure the financial system and mobilise private sector investment. The discussions covered preparations for the 2025 joint governmental negotiations on economic cooperation and new tranches within the Egyptian-German debt swap programme. The bilateral economic cooperation portfolio between the two countries currently stands at 1.6 billion euros, funding projects in priority sectors such as energy, climate, water, and private sector competitiveness. Al-Mashat congratulated Alabali-Radovan on her new position in the government led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, stating that this new phase presented an opportunity to deepen the established bilateral relations. A key topic was the success of the debt swap programme, which began in 2011. A new tranche valued at 21 million euros (equivalent to 1.2 billion EGP) was recently signed to improve renewable energy supplies. Al-Mashat said the programme serves as a practical model for restructuring the global financial system and is managed through a governance structure to ensure optimal implementation. The ministers also reviewed the 2022 Financial Cooperation Agreement, valued at 118 million euros (6.7 billion EGP). The agreement includes support for establishing 25 specialised technical education centres and financing to connect wind energy stations to the national grid, part of the energy pillar of Egypt's 'NWFE' country platform. New Dialysis Filter Factory Operates in July, Covering 65% of Domestic Demand
H-Tayea A new dialysis filter factory in Egypt is set to begin operations this July, marking a significant step toward self-sufficiency in medical supplies. The plant, built at a cost of EGP 160m, is expected to cover 65% of the country's local demand and generate annual savings of up to EGP 3bn (approximately $50m) by cutting import costs. Amr Abdel Razek, Chairperson of Wadi El Nile Stio and SLS Egypt, announced at a recent press conference that the factory meets the latest international standards and has received ISO certification. He described the project as a strategic initiative aligned with the state's efforts to strengthen domestic healthcare manufacturing capabilities. Currently, the company imports raw materials from Germany, but Abdel Razek revealed plans to fully localize production within a year. This shift is intended to reduce Egypt's dependence on foreign suppliers and reinforce the national healthcare system. Before this development, Egypt imported about 90% of its dialysis filters. The new facility is expected to reverse that trend significantly. In addition to dialysis filters, Wadi El Nile Stio and SLS Egypt are expanding into the production of critical pharmaceutical products, particularly medications used in intensive care, anesthesia, respiration, and cardiology. Abdel Razek noted that 40% of these drugs are already produced locally in compliance with World Health Organization (WHO) standards, with plans to begin exports to neighboring countries to boost foreign currency inflows. To support this industrial expansion, the companies have partnered with German experts to deliver specialized training programs aimed at transferring technology and upskilling local technical teams. Abdel Razek also announced a plan to launch 22 new pharmaceutical products, priced up to 60% lower than imported equivalents. This aligns with government directives to improve access to affordable, high-quality medication. In collaboration with El Nasr Pharmaceutical Chemicals Company, the firms are rehabilitating production lines for anesthetic drugs and plan to develop additional factories to modernize Egypt's pharmaceutical infrastructure. The new dialysis filters and anesthetic products will be supplied to the Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority. Furthermore, the companies aim to establish maintenance centers for dialysis filters across various governorates and launch a dedicated department to service dialysis machines.
