Father's Day in the shadow of dementia

Miami Herald13-06-2025
Father's Day is hard, but not because my dad is gone. Well, he is and he isn't. He has dementia.
Cindy, my stepmom, called with the news in the summer of 2020. My Dad, Charles, had been displaying symptoms for a few years, but we all wrote it off. Maybe his hearing was going. Maybe his memory was getting fuzzy. Or so we thought.
His diagnosis came at the height of the pandemic shutdown, and no one was going anywhere. After an excruciatingly long wait, I got vaccinated and started making plans to take him on a trip the next summer. Should we road-trip to the 'Field of Dreams' in Iowa? No, my stepmom cautioned me, Dad is changing.
Instead, in June 2021, I flew from Los Angeles to their home in Delray Beach, and I settled on a Tampa Bay Rays homegame against the Washington Nationals, which required a 3 1/2 hour car ride across the state. For the first time in my life, I was taking care of my dad. I made all the arrangements. A hotel. A tee time. Tickets to a ballgame.
I borrowed my stepmom's car, and we hit the road. I filled the car with music I knew he would like. Tom Petty, The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen. 'Ants Marching' by the Dave Matthews Band came on and my dad slapped his knee and sang along. Maybe a part of him was still intact.
We got to the hotel, changed and walked to get dinner. It was hot. I worried he was getting uncomfortable but couldn't express it. Without the sonic wallpaper of music, the quiet of our walk was deafening.
How was he feeling? 'Fine.' More silence.
'How would you feel if you had to live in a memory care facility? Like Grandma?' 'We'll see,' he said. 'Maybe later.'
The next day started with golf. It was a bust. Next was lunch in Tampa's historic Ybor City.
I suggested we get our spouses a souvenir. 'That's a good idea.' We went into an antique store, and it hit me: Dad would never get my stepmom another gift on his own. He would never buy her flowers or surprise her with an anniversary trip. I felt unspeakably sad for her.
That night was the game. By now I knew how much Dad had changed. I tried not to call attention to it. Still, Dad paid attention the whole game. It was the most peaceful I had seen him during the trip. It was a tight game but the home team won.
We went back to the car. A torrential Florida rainstorm started. I put on the radio and drove slowly. It rained so hard I considered pulling off. Even though I was with my Dad, I was on my own.
In the years since, I've gone back and visited as much as I can. Each time he's worse. Last September, he moved into a memory care facility. I've spent the last five years grieving — the loss of his cognitive function, his personality, his ability to contribute to my life and the world around him.
When I first learned the news, I told my wife what hurt most was running out of time. In my heart was a list of experiences I hoped we would share
We were not candid with our feelings, Dad and me. But during the last five years I've opened up. I thanked him for all the things he's given me. I thanked him for supporting my decision to move to L.A. and chase a dream. He did see me get married, and I knew then just how precious those moments can be.
This year I'll go see the Los Angeles Dodgers play and I'll think about him every game. I'll keep score just as he taught me and make memories with my wife and friends. He won't be there, and yet he will.
It's exactly what he would want for his son.

The Eagles Sphere residency picks up in September. How much are tickets?

Vivid Seats is the New York Post's official ticketing partner. We may receive revenue from this partnership for sharing this content and/or when you make a purchase. Featured pricing is subject to change. As far as we know, the end of 'The Long Goodbye Tour' is near. In July 2023, The Eagles announced that they were embarking on a multi-year farewell run where they'd play venues all over North America. 'Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed,' the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers shared in a statement, two summers ago. 'But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.' Advertisement Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Vince Gill, Deacon Frey, Timothy B. Schmit and co. proceeded to play arenas all over the US up until February 2024. Shortly after, they broke the news that they were conducting a Las Vegas Sphere residency. 13 months and 32 shows (!) later, the '70s hitmakers may actually be approaching the end of the 'Long Goodbye.' At the time of publication, they have 12 more concerts scheduled from September through October 2025…and then that's it. As of now, there's nothing else in the books. Advertisement Thankfully, if you want to see the 'Hotel California' band live, tickets are available for all remaining Sin City gigs. Based on our findings, the lowest price we could find on tickets was $377 including fees on Vivid Seats for their Halloween show. Other concerts have seats starting anywhere from $393 to $465 including fees. Yes, we know that's expensive. However, it's hard to put a price on seeing a bucket list group like The Eagles live. Not only do they throw an out and out hit parade — 'One Of These Nights,' 'Lyin' Eyes,' 'Take It To The Limit,' New Kid In Town' and 'Life In The Fast Lane' is just a taste of what you'll get at their live show — but Sphere also provides a hair-raising optical spectacle. Advertisement 'The way the Sphere screen truly envelops the stage allows the crowd to be transported both musically and visually, and the Eagles' show took a journey from under the sea to above the clouds (with some terrestrial stops in between),' Billboard raved in a review of a September 2024 concert. 'Some of the most stunning visual displays included a couple's gorgeous underwater choreography for 'The Boys of Summer'; a towering cityscape growing over the crowd before collapsing down into the ground for 'In the City; and a bus driving all the way into the cosmos and into a meteor shower for 'Take It to the Limit.'' Sound like the bucket list show of the century for you? For more information, our team has everything you need to know and more about The Eagles' Las Vegas Sphere residency below. Still, after 50+ years together, 78-year-old founding member Don Henley (drums, vocals, also known for the '80s smash 'Boys of Summer), continues to head the group. Advertisement At all Sphere dates, he's joined by 77-year-old Joe Walsh (who also fronted The James Gang), 77-year-old Timothy B. Schmit (bassist and vocalist who played with Poco), 22-time Grammy winner Vince Gill and the late Glenn Frey's 30-something son, Deacon. Past members that are no longer with the band include Frey (who passed away in 2016) and Randy Meisner (died in 2023). Bernie Leadon is still alive but hasn't played with the band since 2016. As for guitarist Don Felder, he tours with Styx and REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin, although The Post reported he suffered a medical emergency at a show earlier this year. Over the course of the group's half-century together, The Eagles have received six Grammy Awards, performed over 1,000 concerts, and sold over 150 million albums. All About Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's 3 Kids (and Why They 'Work Together Well ' as Co-Parents)

They welcomed Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel between 2005 and Gist Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner share three children, Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel. Violet was born in 2005, Seraphina was born in 2009, and Samuel arrived in 2012. Garner and Affleck split in 2015 after ten years of marriage, but continue to co-parent and go on outings as a Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's romance didn't stand the test of time, the former couple have remained a united front for their three kids. The Daredevil costars welcomed their first daughter, Violet Anne, in December 2005, six months after they tied the knot in an intimate Turks and Caicos wedding. Their family tree continued to bloom in later years, with Violet gaining two more siblings: Seraphina and Samuel. And while the duo split in 2015 after a decade of marriage, they've been vocal about their co-parenting relationship. 'I'm really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids' mom, who's wonderful and great,' Affleck told GQ in a March 25 interview. 'We work together well.' In June 2025, Garner posted a Father's Day tribute to Affleck on Instagram, where she wrote "Happy Father's Day to 3 people's favorite landing spot." The pair has never shied away from spending time together in support of their kids. One month after Affleck finalized his divorce from Jennifer Lopez, he and Garner—who's now dating longtime beau John Miller—were photographed at their son's birthday party. And they've otherwise reunited at school plays, community events, and baseball games. Being raised by A-list actors has its unique challenges, and Garner and Affleck have had to teach their kids not to read into tabloid speculation about their parents' love life. 'We used to have a thing, my ex-wife and I, when they would see something on a supermarket stand,' he told GQ. 'We would say, 'Well, you know this isn't always true because if it were, you would have 15 brothers or sisters or whatever the number of stories is where they said that your mom was pregnant.'' Though the actors have largely kept their kids out of the spotlight, Garner and Affleck can't help but gush about them on occasion. Below, here's everything to know about Garner and Affleck's kids. Violet Anne Affleck After their quiet wedding in the Bahamas, Garner and Affleck had their first daughter, Violet, on December 1, 2005. Her moniker is a love letter to her immediate family. According to People, the 19-year-old's first name comes from Garner's grandmother while 'Anne' is a touching nod to her mother's middle name. Over two years after her arrival, the Air alum gushed over his daughter's vibrant personality. 'She is happy as hell and talks like crazy!' he told Parade in October 2007, per People. 'She has the ability to make me smile and feel so good and be so charmed that, when I'm not with her for a while, all I want to do is go home, just to be around her again.' That same year, Garner told InStyle about how Affleck had adjusted to fatherhood. "Violet prefers him to anyone. He's a teddy bear of a guy. Nothing makes me happier than to see the two of them together and her little hands on his face." Meanwhile, Garner said that while she was excited to explore parenthood with her then-husband, she also had the 'first-time mom' jitters when raising Violet. 'I was such a first-time mom,' she told Allure in May 2023. 'My eldest daughter didn't have a shot. She couldn't have a free thought—I was all over her. I was a nightmare for everyone around me.' But eventually, Garner started to trust her motherly instincts and allowed her daughter to grow into her own, as she always 'had a lot of faith' in her kids. In 2022, on Violet's 17th birthday, the teen made a rare public appearance with her mom at former President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden's State dinner. Both sporting all-black gowns, the mother-daughter duo were all smiles as they roamed through the halls of the White House. Violet also teamed up with her dad a year later, joining him at Michael Rubin's famous White Party in July 2023. While the 19-year-old has largely been out of the public eye, she hit a major milestone last fall: She started her freshman year at Yale University. 'It is exciting,' Garner told People of her daughter's collegiate journey so far. 'I can see the stress—even though the excitement and stress go hand in hand. But she's handling it like a champ and she's totally in charge.' Seraphina Rose Elizabeth Affleck Two years after welcoming her look-a-like, the Juno star welcomed baby Seraphina in January 2009. Similar to Violet, Garner and Affleck have kept their middle child out of the spotlight over the years, with the exception of occasional family outings. Like many teenagers, 15-year-old Seraphina balances school with work. "My oldest two have jobs,' he revealed during his April appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends. 'In fact, [Seraphina] just got a job, the kind of classic teenager working a shop job. I won't say what it is. My older one in college is working and trying to get an internship for the summer.' After all, he noted that it'll feel like a 'disservice' to not set monetary boundaries with his kids. But Seraphina's recent job isn't completely filling up their schedule, as the teen is still carving out time to hang out with Affleck. In fact, in July 2025, Seraphina joined Affleck, Garner, and Samuel for a Red Sox game at Boston's Fenway Park. Affleck has been open about adjusting his work schedule to family life, especially after he and Garner divorced and began splitting time with their kids. "My standards really changed. I don't want to go travel and do something if it's not really rewarding and meaningful," Affleck told People in 2021. "It's not like I'm some martyr for my kids. I get more out of it than anything else." He's since prioritized directing work based in LA, avoiding jobs that take him out of the country, or even to other states. "If I'm in Los Angeles and I'm in an office and I'm doing this work, I can step out for the basketball game or the jazz performance," Affleck told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. "These years are too important. If I miss them, I'll regret it for the rest of my life." Samuel Garner Affleck And another Red Sox fan is born. Three years before the couple split, Affleck and Garner welcomed their third child, Samuel, in February of 2012. 'We are happy to announce on February 27, Jennifer gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Samuel Garner Affleck,' Affleck wrote on Facebook at the time, posting a sweet photo of their son. Garner took a six-month break from acting to focus on Samuel. "Three kids just knocks you flat on your ass," she told Variety in a 2018 interview. But when her former agent Patrick Whitesell reminded her of her creative goals, Garner knew it was time to get back out there. 'Patrick said, 'Either this is the telephone call about you doing Dallas Buyers Club and how we're going to make that happen, or it's a telephone call about your retirement,'' Garner said. 'That was a real moment of decision and clarity and I loved him for it because it forced me to say, 'OK, I am not ready to be home all the time.' In 2019, Affleck told Ellen DeGeneres how much he was enjoying coaching Samuel's little league team, "It's like the dad dream, coaching your son or daughter on their little league team. It's very exciting," he said, noting that he even left a press tour in Asia a day early to make one of Samuel's games. But baseball isn't the only sport the father son duo bond over. Samuel often joins his dad court side at NBA games. They watched the Los Angeles Lakers play the Minnesota Timberwolves in February 2025, and saw the Lakers beat the Golden State Warriors the previous March. Affleck also cheers Samuel on at his own basketball games, where he sometimes struggles to bite his tongue. "I was at a basketball game for 11-year-olds, loudly complaining about the inconsistencies of the traveling calls," Affleck told People in 2023. "And I just was like, 'Get a hold of yourself.' I mean, listen, you don't want to be one of those parents." Read the original article on InStyle Solve the daily Crossword

'Today' star Dylan Dreyer posts sweet family photo with husband after split

"Today" meteorologist Dylan Dreyer posted a photo with husband Brian Fichera and their three sons after announcing the couple's split this month. There might be clear skies ahead for "Today" meteorologist Dylan Dreyer and her husband Brian Fichera after announcing their breakup. The third hour cohost took to Instagram on July 29 to share photos of the pair on a family vacation with their three sons – Calvin, Oliver and Rusty – after announcing the couple's separation earlier this month. "Find joy in things around you, take a deep breath, count to 10. You'll soon find you're living under sunny skies again," Dreyer captioned the post, using a quote from her 2021 children's book "Misty the Cloud: A Very Stormy Day." Dreyer's friend and third hour cohost Al Roker commented from his neck of the woods, writing "Wow!!!" on the photo. Dreyer, who is not on "Today" this week seemingly due to her Turks and Caicos vacation, has not publicly addressed the couple's split on the NBC morning franchise. 'Today' meteorologist Dylan Dreyer announces split from husband Brian Fichera Dreyer, 43, and Fichera, 38, tied the knot in 2012. Dreyer joined NBC News in September that year. The NBC meteorologist announced the couple's separation in a July 18 post on Instagram hours after the show ended, writing over a sunset photograph that "for many years, I have shared my family with you -- the highs and lows, the ups and downs, and all of the blessings and beautiful memories in between." "For that reason, I want to share with you that a few months ago, Brian and I made the decision to separate," Dreyer wrote. "We began as friends, and we will remain the closest of friends. Most importantly, we will continue to co-parent our three wonderful boys together with nothing but love and respect." While Fichera is mostly missing from her Instagram posts this year, Dreyer previously wrote "Happy Father's Day Bri!!" in a June 15 caption featuring a family selfie. It's been a cloudy year so far for NBC's third hour "Today" family. Dreyer's third hour cohost Sheinelle Jones' 45-year-old husband Uche Ojeh died from an aggressive form of brain cancer in May, and she has been off air the entire year. "With profound sadness, we share this morning that Uche Ojeh, the husband of our friend and 'Today' co-host Sheinelle Jones, has passed away after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma," show anchor Savannah Guthrie shared on May 23.
