How climate change is leading to archeological discoveries

If it weren't for climate change, the wreckage might never have been recovered.
Those who worked for more than a year to identify the Earl of Chatham credited an uptick in stormy weather and new, unusual wind patterns for its discovery. The accelerating transformation of the coastline, known as the "cradle of shipwrecks," could lead to similar finds in the future, they say.
Such discoveries are happening in many other places, too.
As the planet continues to warm, causing glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise, scientists say discoveries like the one found on the Scottish island of Sanday are becoming increasingly common across the globe.
"It's a double-edged sword," said James Delgado, a maritime archeologist who has studied wreckages for more than 40 years. "There are more discoveries happening, climate change being a factor in that, but we're also seeing things ... that we discovered in the past that are now disappearing."
Shipwrecks galore
Coastal erosion has long led to the surfacing of old shipwrecks, but the number of vessels turning up has "intensified" as global temperatures have increased, said Delgado, who wrote the book "The Great Museum of the Sea: A Human History of Shipwrecks."
Since 1992, the global sea level has risen nearly 4 inches, according to data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Scientists estimate that every inch of sea level rise equates to about 8.5 feet of beachfront loss across coasts.
Higher sea levels also mean stronger storm surges.
"We're seeing more dramatic churn on beaches during storms and that is causing the stripping away of the sand and other things that have been covering up these shipwrecks for decades," said Delgado. "More storms and higher sea levels have really started to bring them out of hiding."
The same year the Earl of Chatham was discovered in Scotland, a storm in Massachusetts exposed a wrecked schooner from 1909, another on North Carolina's Outer Banks's revealed the remains of a boat from 1919 and storms in Maine resurfaced yet another 18th century vessel on a beach.
The hurricanes Matthew in 2016 and Irma in 2017 eroded Crescent Beach in St. Augustine, Florida, helping lead to the 2020 discovery of a Civil War ship. A couple walking along the beach spotted the wooden planks of the Caroline Eddy, a Union supply ship that was heading toward Philadelphia in 1880 when it was damaged by a giant wave.
Treasures hidden in the ice
As the climate warms, melting glaciers have also begun to reveal frozen artifacts from thousands of years ago.
Dramatic melting of ice in Norway's high mountains in 2006 led to a boom in findings. Since then, archeologists have collected more than 3,000 items, spanning 6,000 years of history, from the nation's glaciers and ice patches as part of an initiative called Secrets of the Ice.
Humans have hunted reindeer and traveled along the Norwegian mountain ranges since the Stone Age. Julian Robert Post-Melbye, who has worked on the program since 2011, said items found in the ice have given historians a more vivid understanding of what life was like back then.
The artifacts are literally frozen in time.
"They look like they've been lost for 10 days, but they've been there for 4,000 years," Post-Melbye said.
Archeologists have found birch bark containers with wax candles still inside them. They've found dogs with collars that fell into the ice. They've analyzed horse manure from 800 years ago to discover what the animals ate and the pollen count at the time, Post-Melbye said.
"All these ice artifacts are just traces of a very rich and diverse communities and society stretching thousands of years that we had no, or virtually no possibility of studying 20 years ago."
'Artifacts are getting destroyed'
For Post-Melbye, any excitement about the influx of new archeological finds - and what they mean for understanding the past - quickly gives way to a more potent feeling of despair.
It's hard to ignore what the artifacts mean: "6,000 years of ice has been melting away during the last 20 years in Norway," he said.
While the changing climate is leading to more discoveries, it's also destroying some existing archeological sites and leading to increased challenges for researchers.
Post-Melbye said a team of about six archeologists in Norway is running against the clock each year to collect newly un-frozen artifacts from 70 glacial sites before they dry up, crack or blow away in the wind.
The longer items are exposed to the elements, the more they degrade.
"There's no way we can get to every site," said Post-Melbye. "We know every year artifacts are getting destroyed."
In other areas of the world, increased rain and rougher seas are wearing down previously preserved historical sites.
For instance, the Bouldnor Cliff, a submerged prehistoric settlement from the Stone Age off England's southern coast, has experienced four meters of erosion in 10 years, according the Maritime Archaeology Trust, a charity in the United Kingdom. Researchers are racing against time to rescue perfectly kept artifacts - from flint tools to hazelnuts - found at the underwater site.
A worm-like marine mollusk has also now migrated to the Baltic Sea, where it is eating ships that have otherwise stayed intact in the cold, brackish waters, Delgado said.
He sees the onslaught archeological finds and the increasing preservation challenges brought on by climate change as "canaries in the coal mine."
"Maybe them also being victims to climate change is yet another reminder that we need to do something to try to slow the progression of what's happening," he said.

Space Scotland names new CEO to steer thriving space sector

Space Scotland has appointed Dr Natasha Nicholson as its new chief executive officer as she aims to use her scientific expertise to help guide the country's rapidly growing sector into a key international player. Space Scotland, a not-for-profit company, was founded in 2021 and supports Scotland's space industry, academia, and government representatives in a bid to further develop the country's space sector. Dr Nicholson's appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Scotland's space ambitions, with Europe's first-ever commercial launch into orbit expected to take place from Shetland in the months ahead. READ MORE: History made as Scottish rocket firm hits 'major milestone' 'There's so much potential, so much existing, fantastic work being done here in Scotland and so much potential to take it further as well,' Dr Nicholson told The National. With a surge in commercial activity across research, manufacturing, and satellite data analysis, Scotland now hosts more than 180 space organisations and leads Europe in the manufacture of small satellites, with firms like Spire Global, AAC Clyde Space, and Alba Orbital all operating from Glasgow alone. Dr Nicholson (below) said her vision for the future includes continuing to support the 'amazing satellite manufacturing' that Scottish firms are currently producing and wants to further the 'attractiveness' Scotland offers to international firms to invest in the country. (Image: Space Scotland) She added that Scotland's space sector has already made an amazing contribution for 'a small European country' and insisted that Scotland has 'strengths in so many other areas beyond space as well,' as she lists advanced manufacturing, AI, and robotics as core strengths for the country. Dr Nicholson also praised Scotland's space community for its collaborative approach with its industry working in partnership with many of its universities and colleges, along with Scottish Enterprise and the UK Space Agency. 'It's been a very collaborative approach to things, and it would be a real shame not to have that approach because there are so many fantastic organisations and great strengths here in Scotland, and that pooling our resources is always going to give us better results,' Dr Nicholson said. She added: 'There's a lot to be done and I think Scotland can really be at the forefront of some of the new emerging sectors, sort of subspace sectors as well, like in space manufacturing.' Dr Nicholson, who is returning to Space Scotland after leaving to run her own firm for a while, said she had 'really fond memories' of the organisation and of the Scottish space community. Space Scotland chair and board director Peter Young welcomed Dr Nicholson's appointment as he said: 'Scotland's space industry offers major opportunities across sustainability, launch, data and advanced manufacturing, while also enabling innovation in sectors like life sciences, AI and fintech. 'Natasha is the right person to help us harness that potential. Her scientific knowledge, delivery focus, and strong network made her an outstanding choice.' Young added there's a huge job to be done in promoting Scotland's thriving space sector as he said people are quick to jump to the idea of something like Elon Musk taking people to Mars or something else 'fanatical' when there are a lot of real-world applications which benefit immensely from the sector growing. 'Actually, literally, it's more down to earth than that in terms of what this space industry is and what it can bring,' he said. 'It can add value to daily life stuff in terms of what's happening here in Scotland.' Young (below) said that, while there are plans for Scotland to have its first commercial take off in the near future, 'it's not all about missions to Mars or asteroids'. When Dr Nicholson was last with Space Scotland, she helped establish a pilot where students from universities and colleges worked with the space industry to get real-life experience and said she hopes to introduce more similar initiatives to get Scots involved. The initiative was designed to be more practical and transitional for people who had either just come out of university or had graduated with a more general engineering background, so they could learn more specifics around skills for the likes of satellite manufacturing and other space sectors. With a PhD in astrobiology, Dr Nicholson has held roles including Cross-Cluster Liaison Manager for the Science and Technology Facilities Council at Harwell Campus, Chief Scientific Officer for the Arctic research station, and CEO for a space-related research and development business. She will now lead the next phase of development for Space Scotland, bringing focus to the delivery of the national strategy.

In the UK, a Scottish company has received the cosmic equivalent of a space driving license. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has given the green light for Skyrora to launch a rocket from a remote Scottish island. If the launch is successful, Skyrora would become the first British company to manufacture and launch a rocket into space from the UK. SaxaVord, a former radar station on Unst in the Shetland Islands, is the country's only space port – the world of tomorrow is today, folks. It would also be the first rocket launch on British soil in 50 years, when Black Arrow, launched from Woomera in 1971, placed a satellite into orbit. Skylark XL can reach an altitude of 500km, piercing a layer of warm air called the thermosphere, where many satellites and spacecraft orbit. It lacks the capabilities to reach low-Earth orbit, however, the goal of most micro launch companies. The rocket is made from 3D-printed parts and is capable of reaching 3.5 times the speed of sound. Skylark XL could be used to conduct cheap microgravity experiments. The Skylark XL product page says the craft is designed to place payloads into polar orbit up to 1,000km in the atmosphere. Scots could be craning their necks up high to see a 12-metre-long suborbital rocket, a Skylark L, tearing through the clouds next year. The end goal is to launch the bulkier Skyrora XL model. The licence, which was granted last month, says Skyrora can launch a rocket into the heavens up to 16 times a year by 2030. Rob Bishton, CEO of CAA, told Metro: 'Granting a home-grown company, Skyrora, its launch licence is a major milestone for our space sector and our nation. 'Our work as the UK's space regulator is enabling the burgeoning launch industry to safely grow, bringing new jobs and investment with it.' Dr Paul Bate, chief executive of the UK Space Agency, welcomed the news. He told Metro: 'This demonstrates the growing strength of our domestic launch capabilities, and the thriving commercial space economy we are building across the country. 'With companies like Skyrora, we're positioning Britain as the natural choice for customers seeking reliable, cost-effective access to space from European soil.' Alan Thompson, head of government affairs at Skyrora, told Metro that the launchpad won't be used commercially but will test different space tech. 'As for future launches, two of the three stages of the XL vehicle are complete, and we expect to deliver the first stage soon,' he added. 'We plan to complete integration tests of the XL vehicle next year, dependent on manufacturing timelines, and target a launch in 2027.' As the UK reaches for the stars, the US is thinking bigger – both the US and China are working to build a nuclear reactor on the Moon. The US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is set to announce fast-tracked plans to achieve this, fearing that if China does so first, they could 'potentially declare a keep-out zone'. The mini reactor will generate 100 kilowatts of electrical power – enough to keep the lights on for about 80 households – and will be ready to launch by 2029, Duffy wrote in a directive according to Politico. More Trending He added: 'To properly advance this critical technology to be able to support a future lunar economy, high power energy generation on Mars, and to strengthen our national security in space, it is imperative the agency move quickly.' Nuclear power is the only reliable option for astronauts living on the Moon, where a day is about a month, half spent in scorching sun and the other in frigid darkness. The Moon's South Pole is likely where a nuclear reactor could be set up, where it's sunny 80% more of the time and frozen water hides in craters.
