Peoria man found guilty of setting girlfriend on fire with Vodka
Daniel Pace was found guilty Peoria County Circuit Judge Steve Kouri of aggravated battery and aggravated domestic battery after a one-day bench trial, according to Peoria County court records.
He now faces up to 30 years in prison when he's sentenced July 9. Until then, he remains in custody at the county jail.
On Aug. 19, 2022, Pace and the woman were arguing at the Landmark Apartment complex, located at the 700 block of North Shipman Street when he grabbed a bottle of Vodka and poured it on her head. He then 'flicked' a lighter two times, catching her on fire, said Anna Perales with the Peoria County State's Attorney Office.
While Pace did smother the flames with a blanket, the woman still was badly burned, receiving burns to 30% of her body. Of those, 19% of those burns being 3rd degree burns, Perales said.
During the investigation, Pace repeatedly told investigators that she had caught herself on fire. At trial, however, he took the stand and said he didn't mean to light her on fire while she was lying in bed, Perales said.
Prosecutors disagreed, saying there were burn marks on the apartment's floor and not on the bed. Photos at the trial also showed burns on her front and backside, she said.
