Boxer Gervonta Davis will not face domestic violence charges
Boxer Gervonta Davis will not face misdemeanor charges for battery-domestic violence because the alleged victim, Davis' former girlfriend, and the alleged witness, the woman's mother, failed to cooperate, according to the Miami State's Attorney Office. Davis, 30, was arrested July 11 and the charge stemmed from an alleged incident with his former girlfriend, who is the mother of his two children, on Father's Day, June 15, in Doral, Florida. "This case was dropped as the victim is declining to prosecute per her … attorney," Ed Griffith, Public Information Officer for the Miami State's Attorney Office, told USA TODAY Sports by email. "Her sentiments were directly confirmed by the Assistant State Attorney handling the prosecution. "The witness to the incident, who is the victim's mother, also failed to cooperate and failed, after being subpoenaed for a prefile conference on Thursday (Aug. 7). Followed up attempts to contact the witness via phone were unsuccessful. The incident itself was not observed by the police officer who had been called to the scene eliminating him as a possible witness to what had transpired." With the dropping of the criminal charge, the $10,000 bond required as a part of the pretrial release was dismissed, according to Griffith.

Peoria man found guilty of setting girlfriend on fire with Vodka
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A 42-year-old South Peoria man was convicted Friday of setting his then-girlfriend on fire nearly three years ago. Daniel Pace was found guilty Peoria County Circuit Judge Steve Kouri of aggravated battery and aggravated domestic battery after a one-day bench trial, according to Peoria County court records. He now faces up to 30 years in prison when he's sentenced July 9. Until then, he remains in custody at the county jail. On Aug. 19, 2022, Pace and the woman were arguing at the Landmark Apartment complex, located at the 700 block of North Shipman Street when he grabbed a bottle of Vodka and poured it on her head. He then 'flicked' a lighter two times, catching her on fire, said Anna Perales with the Peoria County State's Attorney Office. While Pace did smother the flames with a blanket, the woman still was badly burned, receiving burns to 30% of her body. Of those, 19% of those burns being 3rd degree burns, Perales said. During the investigation, Pace repeatedly told investigators that she had caught herself on fire. At trial, however, he took the stand and said he didn't mean to light her on fire while she was lying in bed, Perales said. Prosecutors disagreed, saying there were burn marks on the apartment's floor and not on the bed. Photos at the trial also showed burns on her front and backside, she said.
