Cricket: Mitch Owen reveals simple plan after brilliant debut

The Australian5 days ago
The elevation in arenas was significant for Mitch Owen, but the idea to just 'swing hard' remained his guiding principle after a stunning international debut in which he joined the most esteemed company.
Only fellow Tasmanian Ricky Ponting and David Warner had made a half-century on T20 debut for Australia before Owen, shuffled down the order having made his name as an opener, blasted six sixes in an unforgettable 27-ball 50 under the bright lights in Jamaica.
With his parents and girlfriend in the stands at Sabina Park, Owen, who has been 'on the go' since putting his name in the headlines with a century in the Big Bash final, took a wicket with the ball, then made his mark immediately with a fourth-ball six, his first scoring shot, as a signal of intent with the bat.
That was the plan too, always is for Owen, who was modest post-match about his brilliant first-up performance.
'I'm firstly happy we got the win and it was nice to contribute,' he said.

'But yeah, it's great to join those class players.
'For me, I've been trying to play positive over the last six to eight months and today wasn't any different, going out there, trying to put the pressure back on the bowlers and I was lucky enough I got a few away early and was able to work into my innings.'
Owen, noting the extra fielders out in the deep the only real difference between coming in as an opener and in the middle order, said his batting plans hardly changed.
'I still went out there and tried to hit six first then work my way down,' he said.
'The difference is five fielders out, but I tried to put that to the back of my mind and just swing hard.'

Owen put on 80 runs off just 40 balls with Cameron Green, who also made a half-century, forming what could be an imposing long-term partnership between two players still in the infancy of their careers
'It was great to bat with Greeny, it was the first time I've experienced that,' he said
'He was great, kept me nice and calm and to my process. Hopefully, we can do it a lot more.'
Owen's stunning turn in the Big Bash, scoring two hundreds including his whirlwind 108 off just 42 balls in the final in Hobart, resulted in contracts around the international T20 circuit.
He started in South Africa in January, then got gigs in the Pakistan Super League and hit the big-time playing with a call-up to the Indian Premier League, albeit getting just a single game.
Most recently, Owen has been blasting bowlers in Major League Cricket in the US where he was named player of the tournament after making 313 runs and taking 14 wickets in 12 games.

His efforts landed him an Australian call-up ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, with a spot up the top, or in the middle as a slugging partner for Hurricanes teammate Tim David, all now live options.
'Any time you get a young kid who comes in and performs like that in his first game for Australia, it's always exciting,' Australian captain Mitch Marsh said after Owen's Sabina Park heroics.
'We're pumped for him.
'We want him to come in here and be as relaxed as possible. We understand he's going to be nervous playing for Australia but try and create a relaxed environment where he can hopefully keep doing that for us.'

West Indies skipper's ‘masterclass' puts Aussies to the sword

Australia secured the series victory against the West Indies on Saturday with Tim David delivering a historic innings at Warner Park in Saint Kitts. The Aussies were set 215 runs to make it three wins in a row and while it looked dicey halfway through the chase, David flipped the script in absurd scenes. After the ninth over, the Aussies found themselves at 4/92 before David flicked the switch and went after the West Indies attack. The middle order star etched his name into the record books by registering the fastest ever half-century and century by an Australian in a T20 international contest. He needed only 16 deliveries to bring up his half-century and brought up his century off 37 deliveries as he guided the Aussies home. In one blistering passage, he led the way as he and Mitchell Owen scored 71 runs over the course of three overs. 'This is a momentum-changing knock here from Tim David,' Brad Haddin said, while his fellow commentator Samuel Badree added: 'This is insane level batting'. The absurd innings left cricket fans watching on in sheer disbelief after the level of hitting that was being displayed. Sports journo David Moore wrote on X: 'Is Tim David playing Stick Cricket? He is absolutely on a different planet today.' Journalist Brayden May wrote: 'Tim David treating the West Indian bowlers like nan on Christmas Day.' Another added: 'Goodness me this tim david innings is reminiscent of old chris gayle work. he's smoked about a dozen balls out of the ground today, power hitting of the top most order.' A third wrote: 'What an onslaught by Tim David. He has singlehandedly taken the game away from West Indies.' David's electric display of power-hitting stole the limelight away from West Indies skipper Shai Hope. With the West Indies needing to win in order to keep their hopes alive in the five match series, Hope batted superbly when scoring an unbeaten 102 to lead his nation to 4-214 from the full allotment of overs. The star West Indian Hope joined Chris Gayle as the only batters from the Caribbean to score centuries in all formats of the game when scoring his maiden T20 century from 57 deliveries. Despite his best efforts, the tally wasn't enough as Australia's middle order exploded and snatched victory away. With the series now wrapped up by the Aussies the final two matches mean little with the hosts hoping they can snag at least one victory for their fans.

Cricket world left wincing as Ben Stokes cops brutal shot to the groin

Sky Sports were forced to apologise to viewers after Ben Stokes took a smack to his privates against India. Fans were left wincing after the England star was whacked with a cricket ball during play in the fourth Test. Joe Root hit a magnificent 150 on day three of the Fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford. Root's 38th Test century bumped him up to second on the all-time leading run-scorers list in Test cricket behind Sachin Tendulkar. But it was Stokes, 34, who nearly stole the headlines after the ball slammed right into his groin. Stokes was batting when a ferocious shot rocketed between his bat and, well, found its mark. Cameras zoomed on Stokes writhing in pain, leading to a wave of sympathetic groans from viewers at home. The commentator said: 'Oh! Movement, pain. He's been hit in the midships again.' While Prakash Wakankar on comms joked about what the physio could do about it. The commentator then added: 'Sorry if you heard any expletives there, but perhaps you can understand why.' Fans took to social media to joke about the incident, with one writing: 'X marks the spot'. While another said: 'Should have protection there.' A third added: 'That's got to hurt.' Stokes, ever the warrior, eventually picked himself up, though with a noticeable limp. He briefly went off injured but returned to remain not out as England went 544-7 after the first Innings. England lead India by 186 runs with three wickets remaining. Meanwhile, Root pushed past Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting with his 150. It's now only Tendulkar keeping him off the summit. The Yorkshireman, 34, has a way to go to eclipse The Little Master's tally of 15,921. He needs a further 2,513 runs to become No 1 - but at the relatively young age of 34, Tendulkar's record seems achievable.
