Banking gains offset losses as PSX holds 147,000 level

Express Tribune3 days ago
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed marginally higher on Tuesday as it entered a consolidation phase, with the benchmark KSE-100 index gaining 75.48 points, or 0.05%, to settle at 147,005.32.
Analysts noted that investors adopted a cautious stance amid mixed sentiment, selective buying, and profit-taking. Trading volumes recorded an uptick, supported by gains in banking stocks, while weakness in the fertiliser and energy sectors capped overall gains.
Arif Habib Limited (AHL) Deputy Head of Trading Ali Najib said the KSE-100 index floated in both directions during the session before closing slightly positive, maintaining the key 147,000 level.
'Mixed sentiment was observed during trading hours, with investors opting for some switching and profit-taking,' he said.
On the news front, Pakistan and US officials were finalising details of a trade deal, while Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb hinted at major US investments across various sectors. Meanwhile, Barrick Mining sought $3.5 billion from global lenders, including US-backed institutions, for the development of the Reko Diq copper and gold project.
Among individual movers, Bank Alfalah, HBL, Systems Limited, Meezan Bank and National Foods added 417 points to the index on buying interest. Conversely, Fauji Fertiliser Company, Mari Petroleum, Oil and Gas Development Company, Pakistan State Oil and Bank AL Habib collectively lost 527 points.
'Going forward, progress on circular debt resolution could further fuel upward momentum. That said, some consolidation or a mild correction remains possible. In case of a pullback, 145,000 is expected to serve as the first support, followed by 143,000, while 150,000 stands as the next key resistance,' Najib added.
Overall, trading volumes rose to 691.7 million shares from Monday's 611.2 million, while the traded value increased to Rs44.6 billion from Rs44 billion in the previous session.
Shares of 482 companies were traded. Of these, 208 closed higher, 242 declined and 32 remained unchanged. Yousuf Weaving Mills was the volume leader with 46.3 million shares, rising by Rs1 to close at Rs6.09.

Shanghai Composite retreats after touching 3,700 level

HONG KONG: China stocks closed lower on Thursday after touching a 3-1/2-year gh as investors locked in gains following the recent bull run. At market close, the Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.5% at 3,666.44, after briefly topping the 3,700 level for the first time since December 2021. The decline also snapped a three-day winning streak and marked the biggest pullback in two weeks. The blue-chip CSI300 Index also gave up gains to close largely flat. 'I think the overall market is still trending upward, though there might be a bit of a correction, which actually is a good thing because it makes the movement healthier,' said Kevin You, deputy portfolio manager of Allianz China A-Shares Equity Fund. The steel sector dropped 2.1% and communications sector lost 2.2% to weigh on markets. Offsetting the losses, the tech-focused STAR50 index was up 0.8%?, the semiconductor index jumped 1.5% and the insurance sector jumped 2.3%. Citi analysts said Beijing's incremental demand-side stimulus has been well on track following the Politburo meeting in July, as measures such as interest subsidy for consumption loans, mega dam project in Tibet and an 'anti-involution' campaign have all helped sentiment. 'Risk appetite seems to be returning' with margin buying surpassing 2 trillion yuan last seen in the 2015 bull market, and external risks could be largely defused for now with the US-China tariff truce officially extended to mid-November, they said. In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index weakened 0.4% to 25,519.32. The tech index lost 1%. Market heavyweight Tencent briefly touched HK$600 per share for the first time since 2021, after it reported a 15% revenue rise in the last quarter on strong gaming performance.

Meta, Shopify and PayPal: Saudi wealth fund sold its stakes in Q2

BANGALORE/DUBAI: Saudi Arabia's almost $1 trillion sovereign wealth fund sold its stakes in several US-listed companies - including Meta, Shopify and PayPal - in the second quarter, according to securities filings released on Thursday. The Public Investment Fund also sold its stakes in Alibaba Group, Nu Holdings and FedEx, the 13F filings show, during a quarter in which US stock markets rebounded from an April drop tied to US tariff policies. The filings showed that PIF no longer held any shares in Meta, Shopify, PayPal, Alibaba, Nu Holdings and FedEx. Its previous filing showed that, at the end of March, the fund had 667,996 class A shares in Meta, 1.25 million class A shares in Shopify, 1.76 million shares in PayPal, 6.83 million shares class A shares in Nu Holdings, 1.61 million in Alibaba sponsored ADS, and 498,164 common shares in FedEx. PIF's total exposure to US equities, which include call options that give the state investor a right to buy an underlying asset at a specified price within a specific time period, was valued at $23.8 billion at the end of the second quarter, versus $25.5 billion at the end of the first quarter. Tasked with spearheading Saudi Arabia's economic diversification under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 plan, PIF has moved well beyond its early holdings in Saudi public equities and infrastructure. In recent years, the fund took high-profile stakes in global brands, such as Uber and Lucid Motors, while also backing sports ventures including LIV Golf and English soccer club Newcastle United. At home, it has poured billions into giga-projects such as NEOM, the futuristic city on the Red Sea, and sectors like tourism, logistics, and clean energy.
