Canara Bank staff-led drive mobilises Rs 16,700 crore in 10 weeks amid deposit growth challenge

Faced with deposit growth challenges,
Canara Bank
launched a unique internal campaign by asking each of its 82,000 employees to contribute towards
deposit mobilisation
. Resultantly, the bank collected Rs 16,700 crore within just ten weeks, a top official has said.
The initiative began on January 26, 2024, amid a system-wide slowdown in deposit accretion. The bank's top management appealed directly to staff, urging them to reach out within their personal and professional circles to help boost the bank's deposit base.
'We had given a call to each of the 82,000 staff members to canvas, contacting their relations and whatever there is in their circle. Each one should bring Rs 10 lakh as a deposit either in CASA (current and savings account) or retail term deposit,' Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer K Satyanarayana Raju told PTI.

Raju said the campaign received wholehearted support from employees, who were aligned with the leadership's vision, thanks to a series of internal reforms over recent years.
'In the last 2-3 years, we have taken steps to get benefits to the staff members, bringing transparency in promotions, performance recognition, and transfers, which has gone well. When we gave a call, we explained to them properly and we could convince them about the need of the hour,' he said, adding that the trade unions also responded positively.

The initiative resulted in Rs 16,700 crore in new deposits, split evenly between CASA and term deposits, Raju said.
This infusion helped bring the bank's credit-deposit (CD) ratio down to 73 per cent in the March quarter from 76 per cent in December, he noted.
He explained that the bank had been nearing the 80 per cent threshold in CD ratio due to heightened credit demand in the final quarter, prompting the urgent employee-led drive.
The strategy also reduced Canara Bank's reliance on bulk deposits—typically high-cost liabilities—with their share falling to 23 per cent from 25 per cent earlier.
Raju clarified that this was not a short-term move to boost end-of-quarter numbers, but a business-strengthening strategy.
'This was not a drive aimed at putting up a high number on deposit for the period-end,' he said. 'It has helped the overall business, as there is stickiness in even the CASA balances.'
He added that the effort also strengthened the bank's connection with its customer base, with long-term benefits expected to follow. Looking ahead, the bank plans to shift its focus towards mobilising monthly recurring deposits.

CM-YUVA campaign: Govt launches drive to aid college students, unemployed youths start own ventures

The state government has launched a campaign across all 75 districts as part of which special teams of officials will visit universities, engineering colleges and other higher education institutions to identify students in their final year, as well as those who remain unemployed despite completing their studies. Once identified, eligible youth will be offered interest-free, collateral-free loans of up to Rs 5 lakh to help them start their own ventures and become job creators. The campaign is being run under Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan (CM-YUVA). According to Sarveshwar Shukla, Joint Commissioner of Industries and nodal officer of the scheme, the primary goal of the Yogi Adityanath-led government is to empower every eligible, educated and progressive-thinking youth by helping them launch their businesses. The vision is to transition youth from 'seeking jobs' to 'creating jobs.' Along with financial support, technical guidance will also be provided to ensure the success of these entrepreneurial initiatives. To ensure effective implementation, specialised training is being provided to officials. A two-day capacity-building workshop was recently organised in Lucknow, focusing on improving the rollout of the scheme and enhancing the functionality of the CM Yuva Portal. These trained officials will soon begin visiting campuses to implement the scheme at the grassroots level. According to the government, more than 2.5 lakh youths have applied for loans under the initiative. Of these, more than 1.10 lakh applications have been forwarded to banks, and loans have been sanctioned to over 53,000 applicants, with 40,000 already receiving funds. Young entrepreneurs have started utilising these interest-free loans to launch ventures in sectors — from cake manufacturing and digital marketing to launch ventures in sectors — from cake manufacturing and digital marketing to interior design, laundry services, solar panel installation, tattoo studios and mineral water plants.

F1 visa updates: Will US soon lift restrictions on student visas as Trump goes soft on China?

Restrictions on international student visas could be lifted soon. As President Donald Trump has softened his stance on Chinese students and said Wednesday that Chinese students would be welcome in US colleges and universities, it is anticipated that the temporary restriction on international student visa applications would be lifted soon. In the US-China trade deal, the Trump administration has agreed to accept Chinese students, as Trump announced on Truth Social: "We will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities." Trump also announced that he had always been in favor of admitting foreign students to the US as that helps US schools and universities as well. "We have 500,000 students coming in from China," Trump said. Pause on all visa interviews for social media vetting All US embassies and consular sections were asked to pause all visa interviews for the time being by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The reason cited was a preparation for an extensive social media vetting. "Effective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, consular sections should not add any additional students of exchange visitor (F, M and J) visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued septel (separate telegram), which we anticipate in the coming days," the cable said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? "People should watch for those spaces to be open, should continue to apply. This is not going to be a lengthy or an ongoing dynamic," Bruce told reporters. "It was meant for a specific, almost an administrative adjustment." She said the interview pause was to ensure embassies and consulates knew what to expect in terms of additional vetting. "And that process, we were told, would be rapid," Bruce said.

Google gives these employees three-days ‘warning' to …. or leave the company

Google is tightening its return-to-office policies across multiple divisions, requiring remote employees within 50 miles of company offices to work on-site at least three days per week or face potential job loss. The tech giant announced the expanded mandate alongside voluntary buyout programs for US-based workers in Search, marketing, research, and core engineering teams. The new policy affects employees in Google's Knowledge & Information division, which houses Search, ads and commerce operations, as well as Core engineering teams. Remote workers who live within 50 miles of approved Google offices must now transition to a hybrid 3-day schedule by September or accept severance packages. "When it comes to connection, collaboration, and moving quickly to innovate together, there's just no substitute for coming together in person," said Jen Fitzpatrick, Senior Vice President of Core Systems, in an internal memo obtained by multiple outlets. "My goal is for every single one of us here to be all-in on building the future of our products," Fox wrote in his memo to staff. The executive made clear that high-performing employees should remain with the company, stating: "If you're excited about your work, energized by the opportunity ahead, and performing well, I really (really!) hope you don't take this!" However, Fox also offered an alternative for struggling employees: "This VEP offers a supportive exit path for those of you who don't feel aligned with our strategy, don't feel energized by your work, or are having difficulty meeting the expectations of your role." Google's crackdown on remote work continues This announcement builds on Google's ongoing efforts to reduce remote work flexibility. In April 2025, the company began requiring remote workers in various divisions to return to offices or face elimination of their positions, with some employees receiving relocation assistance to move within 50 miles of company facilities. Google has been conducting targeted buyout programs since early 2025, following widespread layoffs in 2023 that eliminated 12,000 positions. The company continues hiring while streamlining operations to focus resources on artificial intelligence development and infrastructure investments. The policy excludes employees in DeepMind, Google Cloud, YouTube, and central advertising sales divisions, though YouTube separately requires office returns for nearby remote workers.
