AGP nominates Baishya for Rajya Sabha election, ‘fissures' within party

Time of India3 days ago

Guwahati: The new generation of AGP leaders, who have come up after the Assam Agitation, yet again failed to secure nomination for the lone Rajya Sabha seat.
On Saturday night, AGP again nominated party veteran and outgoing Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishya as its candidate for election to the upper house, which will be held for two seats on June 19, after Baishya (AGP) and Mission Ranjan Das (BJP) complete their respective terms on June 14.

AGP president Atul Borah on Sunday said the Rajya Sabha was a "house of elders" and an experienced parliamentarian like Baishya was the best fit. "Tomorrow (Monday), Birendra Prasad Baishya will file nomination papers. Rajya Sabha is a house of elders. Normally, more knowledgeable persons get priority, if compared to Lok Sabha across all parties," said Borah.
He said in Assam's interest, Baishya needed to be there in the Rajya Sabha.
However, sources in AGP said there has been a huge resentment among other party leaders, who have been seeking nomination for the RS polls. Some of the leaders, who were denied ticket, said there were 27 leaders who sought the ticket, displaying resentment within the party ranks.
General secretaries Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Kamala Kanta Kalita, Satyabrat Kalita, Manoj Saikia and vice-president Apurba Bhattacharjee were among those prominent leaders and well-known faces of AGP, who wanted the ticket.
"There is huge resentment. So many leaders were seeking ticket, when Baishya was again keen to go to Rajya Sabha. It was a kind of protest against his (Baishya's) decision. The younger leaders are frustrated," one of the ticket seekers said.

BJP walkout in the Bengal assembly over Anubrata

Kolkata, June 11 (UNI) Opposition BJP on Wednesday staged a walkout in the West Bengal Assembly after Speaker Biman Banerjee refused to allow the saffron legislators to raise a resolution against the Birbhum's TMC leader Anubrata Mondal's alleged foul language against the Bolpur police station officer-in-charge and against his family members. All BJP MLAs walked out of the Assembly after the chair on Tuesday evening accepted a privilege motion against Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari brought by four senior TMC ministers. BJP legislator Shankar Ghosh told media outside the Assembly on Wednesday that the acceptance of the privilege motion was illegitimate since Adhikari had not said anything against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the floor of the House on Tuesday. Speaker Biman Banerjee took exception to Adhikari's version as the Chief Minister "batted for Pakistan in the assembly" while speaking on a resolution brought by the Speaker appreciating the Indian armed forces for retaliation against terrorists in PoK and in Pakistan after the gunmen shot dead 25 tourists and a local at Pahalgam on April 26 in Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday sought a " review action taken report" from the Superintendent of Police, Bolpur, as to what action the law enforcing agency took against Mondal after he allegedly abused the Bolpur IC. A purported audio clip, which went viral revealed that Mondal, also known as the strongman of Birbhum district, used abusive language against the police officer and his family members. The NCW, before seeking the review action taken by the SP, had written to Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar about the purported verbal abuse of a cop in Birbhum by TMC leader Mondal. However, the NWC was unhappy about the reply and expressed dissatisfaction with police not attaching the copy of the FIR and not even seizing the mobile phone from which Mondal had called the police officer. The NCW in its second letter to the Bolpur SP on Tuesday demanded the review action taken report to be returned within five days. NCW member Archana Majumdar said 'The National Commission for Women expresses deep concern over the apparent inaction by the state police in this matter, despite clear and widespread public outrage. This inaction not only emboldens such repeat offenders but also deeply undermines the morale of the police force and shakes public confidence in the neutrality and responsiveness of law enforcement agencies.' A week after the audio conversation between Mondal and the police officer went viral, Mondal appeared before the sub-divisional police officer and recorded his statement. The TMC condemned Mondal's remarks and sought an apology from him, which he promptly complied with.

Bengaluru stampede an accident: Mallikarjun Kharge hits at BJP over Kumbh, Covid

All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge called the June 4 stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy stadium 'an accident' and said that compared Karnataka government's administrative steps with that during Uttar Pradesh's Kumbh Mela in January, and during Covid-19 pandemic.'It is definitely wrong and our leaders have apologised,' Kharge said in response to the BJP's demand that Karnataka Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister resign over the incident that led to 11 anyone resign for the stampede during the Kumbh Mela? I don't speak much .. . but lakhs took a dip in (Kumbh Mela) and I was criticised for one statement. We saw many dead bodies float away,' Kharge told the media. Saying it wasn't just the case in Uttar Pradesh but also 'during Covid', the AICC president questioned who resigned over those tragedies? 'It's not just the case here, but even during Covid. Did Yogi resign for the stampede? If anything is intentional, then we will accordingly take steps. But this is an accident, it is definitely wrong, and our leaders have also apologised,' he Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had previously made a similar comparison when asked about accountability following the Bengaluru stampede during the victory event for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL also called the BJP's demand for resignations over the RCB stampede 'purely political' and accused the Opposition of playing blame games after the tragic incident.'They always manipulate facts and mislead the public with fake information. Their demand for resignations has no basis,' Siddaramaiah once again brought to attention the stampede during the Kumbh Mela, and pointed to several other past similar incidents, and questioned the BJP's silence then.'During the Kumbh Mela, 40–50 died — did they ask for resignations? A flyover collapsed on its inauguration day, killing 140, did they ask the Prime Minister to step down? Who was Chief Minister during the Godhra train incident? During the oxygen crisis in Chamarajanagar, did they seek Bommai's resignation?'Calling the BJP's demand opportunistic, Siddaramaiah said the government will take appropriate action based on the outcome of the InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Karnataka

Rattled By Faux Pas Of MP Top Brass, BJP Leadership Plans Training Workshop For Leaders

Last Updated: The workshop from May 14-16 will teach the dos and don'ts of social media interaction and coach the leadership on 'understanding their limits' when speaking to the media The top brass of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on the back foot over a series of controversial statements by senior party leaders from Madhya Pradesh, has decided to hold a three-day workshop to teach how to conduct oneself in public life. The seriousness of the event can be gauged from the fact that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda are expected to attend the workshop and impart crucial tips to Madhya Pradesh's BJP leadership. The workshop will be held from May 14-16. Though no official announcement has not been made yet, News18 has learnt that Shah is likely to kick-start the workshop to set the tone. BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde is likely to be present on May 15 to 'teach" the dos and don'ts of social media interaction and cite best practices. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's social media practices to stay away from controversies while engaging on social media are likely to be cited during the workshop. On the closing day, Nadda is likely to be present along with general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh. Sources say Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and BJP state president BD Sharma will also address sessions that are customised to help the state leadership 'understand their limits" when speaking to the media. The three-day workshop is being organised in Panchmarhi—more than 200 kilometres away from Bhopal. Not only the chief minister and his entire cabinet, but all BJP MLAs, state BJP officials and even state spokespersons have been asked to be mandatorily present for the workshop on all three days. While the BJP as a party keeps organising workshops for its leadership to upskill them, the Madhya Pradesh event is different as it comes in the backdrop of back-to-back controversial statements from the senior BJP leadership in the state. Madhya Pradesh's minister for tribal affairs Kunwar Vijay Shah recently sparked outrage with his remarks about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who briefed the media on Operation Sindoor, saying 'we sent their own sisters to beat them up". This prompted the Madhya Pradesh High Court to order an FIR against Vijay Shah, while the Supreme Court criticised his comments and rejected his apology while ordering a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the issue. Within days of that row, MP's deputy chief minister Jagdish Devda claimed during a speech in Jabalpur that the Indian Army 'bows at the feet of PM Narendra Modi" in connection with Operation Sindoor. Congress leader Priyanka Vadra quickly lapped up the opportunity to call it 'constant insult of our Army". In June this year, minister of parliamentary affairs Kailash Vijayavargiya commented during a programme in Indore that he disapproved of women wearing 'skimpy clothes" and refused to take selfies with them, emphasising traditional views on women's attire in India. The remarks drew sharp criticism from the Madhya Pradesh Congress, bringing embarrassment to the BJP. Sources in the BJP suggest the top leadership considered the recent spate of faux pas unacceptable, given that they came from very senior politicians. By sending its top leadership for the workshop, a message is given to the Madhya Pradesh BJP that, in future, such embarrassing statements may not go without consequences. First Published:
