Russia hands over new stealth frigate to Indian Navy
Russia has delivered a new Krivak-class stealth frigate to the Indian Navy, as the countries continue to deepen their defense ties. The Indian Navy commissioned the multi-role frigate, named Tamal, in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad on Tuesday.
The Tamal is the eighth Krivak-class frigate to be delivered to India over the past two decades, and its name symbolizes a sword used by Hindu gods in combat. The construction of the vessel took place at the Yantar shipyard and was monitored by Indian specialists from the Warship Overseeing Team that was stationed in Kaliningrad, according to New Delhi's Defense Ministry. The frigate has 26% Indian components.
"Major Indian OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) involved in the frigate were BrahMos Aerospace Private Ltd, BEL, Keltron, Nova Integrated Systems from Tata, Elcome Marine, Johnson Controls India and many more," the Indian Navy said in a statement. The Tamal's features include vertically launched missiles, an improved 100mm gun, and electronic warfare capabilities. With a crew of over 250 personnel, it has completed sea trials and training in challenging Russian conditions, including a top speed over 30 knots, according to defense officials.
The frigate is also equipped with the BrahMos supersonic missile system, a Surface Surveillance Radar complex, and HUMSA NG Mk II sonar. New Delhi and Moscow have long-standing defense ties. Last week, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov said in a meeting with his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh, that the two countries'friendship extendsinto the military-technical sector.
In December 2024, India received a Russian-built Project 11356 stealth frigate, INSTushil. The 3,900-tonne ship, with a length of 125 meters, is armed with a range of advanced weapons, including supersonic cruise missiles and surface-to-air missiles with enhanced ranges. India is also building two similar frigates, which are part of the Triput class, at Goa shipyard with transfer of technology and design assistance from Russia.

NDA will form govt. in Bihar with two-thirds majority, says Rajnath
PATNA Ahead of the Assembly election later this year in Bihar, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh targeted the opposition Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Wednesday, alleging that these parties only have the sole aim of remaining in power by any means. He was in Patna to attend the Bihar BJP Working Committee meeting, in which several resolutions were passed in the presence of senior party leaders. Addressing the meeting, the Defence Minister sought to draw the blueprint for the BJP, 'the world's largest party', to take on the Opposition. 'When the Opposition talks about the politics of hatred, we have to answer it with the politics of service. When they talk about pushing Bihar back, we will talk about the road map of a bright future. When they distract the people of Bihar from issues, we should talk about educated Bihar,' he said. Mr. Singh also referred to RJD's rule in the past as 'Jungle Raj' and said Bihar has suffered injustice for decades. 'In the last two decades, under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Bihar has made unprecedented progress and the old image of Jungle Raj has been broken,' he said. Expressing confidence that the Janata Dal (United) and BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar will again form the government with a two-thirds majority in the State election due in October-November, he exhorted party cadres to reach every house and share information about the schemes and achievements of the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre. 'We have to convince the people that if anyone can bring back the lost glory of Bihar, it is BJP and NDA,' Mr. Singh said. BJP State president Dilip Jaiswal, who was chairing the meeting, said everyone got new direction and energy from the speech of Mr. Singh. 'Now we will go among the people and tell them about the development that has happened during the NDA government,' he said. Resolutions passed The BJP's Bihar unit passed a resolution criticising the 'appeasement politics' of the Mahagathbandhan helmed by Lalu Prasad's RJD, which has been opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Act that came into force in April. The party passed a two-page political resolution, besides a 'Vijay Sankalp Prastav' that declared 'Lalu [Prasad] and his allies cannot defeat us' in the Assembly poll. The resolution also touched upon the Emergency imposed 50 years ago, and alleged that the 'lives of many generations were wasted behind [Indira Gandhi's] slogan 'Garibi Hatao'. It was under Modi that 27 crore people have been able to overcome poverty'. The resolution also lauded the Defence Minister for 'giving a strong message to China, while on its soil, against double standards towards terror, by refusing to sign the joint statement at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Defence Ministers' meeting'.

Quad condemns Pahalgam attack, seeks action against perpetrators but no mention of any terror group
The Quad foreign ministers strongly condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack in a joint statement, calling for the perpetrators, organisers and financiers of the 'reprehensible act' to be brought to justice without any delay. It also urged all UN States to cooperate with 'all relevant authorities' in this regard, without naming Pakistan or India. In his opening remarks at the meeting in Washington, external affairs minister S Jaishankar had said India expected Quad – a strategic grouping of leading maritime nations committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific – to understand and appreciate India's right to defend its citizens from cross-border terrorism. This was the first Quad ministerial since the April 22 Pahalgam attack and the subsequent India-Pakistan conflict that ended with India's bombing of Pakistan air bases. 'We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, 2025, which claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, while injuring several others,' said the Quad statement, expressing deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The UN Security Council (UNSC) statement condemning the attack in April seemed to have acted as a template for the Quad, the former having urged UN States to cooperate with all relevant authorities – without specifically mentioning India - in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant UNSC resolutions. Like with the UNSC condemnation, there was also no mention of the perpetrator group – The Resistance Front (TRF) – in the Quad statement. As a non-permanent Council member, Pakistan had worked to water down the UNSC statement with support from Beijing. 'We call for the perpetrators, organizers, and financiers of this reprehensible act to be brought to justice without any delay and urge all UN Member States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant UNSCRs, to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities in this regard,' added the Quad statement. Like in the past, the Quad ministerial unequivocally condemned all acts of terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism, renewing commitment to counterterrorism cooperation. Apart from India, Quad comprises the US, Australia and Japan, all of which had separately condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack. India, however, was keen that Quad do so in a joint statement for a more impactful response to Pakistan's role in the attack and its support for cross-border terrorism. It was a fair expectation, given Quad's strong condemnation of cross-border terrorism in the past too, like after the foreign ministers' meeting in Tokyo last year in July. On that occasion, Quad had strongly condemned 26/11 Mumbai and Pathankot attacks, calling for bringing the perpetrators of these attacks to justice without delay, and naming UN-proscribed groups including Pakistan-based JeM and LeT for concerted action against them by the international community. There was no mention this time of any Pakistan terror group or the Mumbai and Pathankot attacks in the Quad statement.
