Jets activate edge rusher Jermaine Johnson from PUP list 11 months after torn Achilles tendon
The edge rusher was activated from the active/physically unable to perform list Sunday after passing his physical 11 months after tearing his right Achilles tendon.
The 26-year-old Johnson, a Pro Bowl selection after the 2023 season, was injured in the third quarter of New York's 24-17 victory at Tennessee in Week 2 last season.
Coach Aaron Glenn said in June that the 2022 first-round draft pick out of Florida State was 'close' to being ready for the start of training camp and would likely start on the physically unable to perform list, 'but he'll be ready for the season.'
Johnson is ready — and was activated in time for the Jets' joint practices with the Giants on Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of their preseason game Saturday night.
He'll also be in position to play in the regular-season opener at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers and former Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who offered Johnson advice about recovering from a torn Achilles tendon after Rodgers recovered from the same injury in his first season with New York in 2023. The two also texted during the offseason.
'It was a pleasure having Aaron around and stuff like that and I wish him the best,' Johnson said in June. 'But when I get between those lines, there's no friends. And I think he knows that and he feels the same, so I'm excited.
'It's just another game, but for me, it's going to be my first game back and there's a lot of emotions. And when my emotions run high, I tend to play pretty well.'
Despite the uncertainty over the injury, Glenn and the Jets picked up Johnson's fifth-year contract option in April, along with those of fellow 2022 first-rounders Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson.

Johnson had 2 1/2 sacks in 14 games as a rookie after being drafted 26th overall before breaking out with 7 1/2 in 2023 while starting all 17 games for New York. He also had 16 quarterback hits, 11 tackles for loss and returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown.
Then came the setback last season, just as he was blossoming into a force on the Jets' defense.
Johnson's return comes as Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams continues to recover from a calf injury. He has missed the past two weeks of training camp, but should be close to returning.

But the oldest face in a new place this NFL season is 73-year-old Pete Carroll on the sideline in Las Vegas. On the defensive side, Super Bowl standouts Josh Sweat and Milton Williams cashed in after helping the Philadelphia Eagles dominate Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Here are 25 of the top players on new teams: Aaron Rodgers The four-time NFL MVP chose to extend his career with the Steelers after two disappointing seasons with the New York Jets. The 41-year-old Rodgers had the worst record of his career last season, going 5-12. But he still threw for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating. The Steelers and coach Mike Tomlin are hoping Rodgers has one more run to help them overcome their recent playoff failures. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston The 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback is on his fourth team in five seasons. He started 6-1 in Pittsburgh last year but the team lost five straight games to end the season. Wilson had 2,482 yards passing, 16 TDs, five picks and a 95.6 passer rating in 11 games in the regular season. He signed with the New York Giants, who also added Winston and then drafted QB Jaxson Dart in the first round. Geno Smith Carroll reunited with Smith in Las Vegas following a trade with the Seahawks. DK Metcalf Before Rodgers officially signed with the Steelers, they gave him a No. 1 receiver. The NFL is recommending enhanced security measures at team and league facilities following a shooting last month at a Manhattan office tower by a gunman authorities say was targeting league headquarters. The memo, which was sent to all teams on Friday, outlined three recommended changes to security protocols. They will be reviewed at a special league meeting on Aug. 26. 'In moments like these, we are reminded that safety is not a background function. It is foundational,' the memo said. The enhanced measures recommended include: updated threat assessments at every team and league facility to ensure risks are accurately identified and mitigated; presence of armed officers at team and league facilities whenever players or staff members are present; weapons screening for anyone seeking entry into a team or league facility, including the use of walk-through magnetometers and X-ray scanners for bags, similar to the process for obtaining entry into games. 'The Committee recognizes that these changes will affect day-to-day operations and require an investment of time, coordination, and resources,' the memo said. 'However, there is no higher priority than the safety and security of our players, coaches, staff, and everyone who works in and around our facilities.' Investigators believe Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people in the building's lobby, then another in a 33rd-floor office on July 28, before he killed himself, authorities said. Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested that he had a grievance against the NFL over a claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease that can be diagnosed only by examining the brain after a person dies. Cleveland has cut AL Central deficit from 15 1/2 games to 6. The record divisional comeback is 14
It's been a tough few weeks for the Cleveland Guardians — except on the field. Star closer Emmanuel Clase joined teammate Luis Ortiz in being placed on leave as part of an investigation into sports betting. Then the front office traded away former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber as he neared a return from Tommy John surgery — not exactly the type of move a team makes when it fancies itself a contender. And yet, the Guardians have won nine of their last 11, even after a loss Sunday to the Chicago White Sox. They are a half-game behind the New York Yankees for the final wild card in the American League. After losing to Detroit on July 6 — just over a month ago — the Guardians had dropped 10 in a row and trailed the AL Central-leading Tigers by 15 1/2 games. That lead is now six. If Cleveland actually catches Detroit and wins the division, it would be the biggest comeback in the divisional play era. Here are the largest comebacks to date, according to Sportradar. 1978 New York Yankees (14 games): New York won the AL East thanks to Bucky Dent's homer in a one-game playoff at Fenway Park, and although this was a painful episode in Red Sox history, the Yankees won this more than Boston lost it. New York went 30-9 to finish the regular season. After stumbling in early September, the Red Sox later won eight in a row to force the playoff. 1995 Seattle Mariners (13 games): After a win on Aug. 2, the California Angels led Seattle by 13 in the AL West and Texas by 11. Then the Angels went 22-34 the rest of the way while the Mariners were 36-20. When the teams met in a one-game playoff, it was a 9-1 blowout in Seattle's favor, and although wild cards were in the playoffs for the first time, California couldn't even salvage one of those. 2012 Oakland Athletics (13 games): Fresh off two straight pennants, the Texas Rangers led the Angels by 6 1/2 and the A's by 13 at the end of June. But Oakland went 33-13 down the stretch, forcing the Rangers to settle for a wild card. 1973 New York Mets (12 1/2 games): Tug McGraw's famous phrase — 'Ya gotta believe!' — was a rallying cry of this comeback. New York was 12 1/2 back in early July and still in last place in late August, but the Mets took a weak NL East with an 82-79 record and then beat Cincinnati to win the pennant. 2006 Minnesota Twins (12 1/2 games): Detroit was 35-14 and led the Twins by over a dozen games, but there was enough time left for Minnesota to edge the Tigers in the AL Central when Detroit dropped five in a row to end the regular season. Although there are similarities between 2006 and this year, the good news for the Tigers is that they did make the World Series that season as a wild card. Line of the week Shea Langeliers had five hits — including three solo homers — for the Athletics a 16-7 win over Washington on Tuesday night. Langeliers became the fourth catcher with two three-homer games, joining Johnny Bench, Gary Carter and Travis d'Arnaud. Comeback of the week The New York Mets led Milwaukee 5-0 in the fourth inning Sunday, but nobody who has watched those two teams recently should have been shocked when the Brewers chipped away and eventually won 7-6 on a solo homer by Isaac Collins in the bottom of the ninth.
