Star closer Emmanuel Clase joined teammate Luis Ortiz in being placed on leave as part of an investigation into sports betting. Then the front office traded away former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber as he neared a return from Tommy John surgery — not exactly the type of move a team makes when it fancies itself a contender.
And yet, the Guardians have won nine of their last 11, even after a loss Sunday to the Chicago White Sox. They are a half-game behind the New York Yankees for the final wild card in the American League.
After losing to Detroit on July 6 — just over a month ago — the Guardians had dropped 10 in a row and trailed the AL Central-leading Tigers by 15 1/2 games. That lead is now six. If Cleveland actually catches Detroit and wins the division, it would be the biggest comeback in the divisional play era.
Here are the largest comebacks to date, according to Sportradar.
1978 New York Yankees (14 games): New York won the AL East thanks to Bucky Dent's homer in a one-game playoff at Fenway Park, and although this was a painful episode in Red Sox history, the Yankees won this more than Boston lost it. New York went 30-9 to finish the regular season. After stumbling in early September, the Red Sox later won eight in a row to force the playoff.
1995 Seattle Mariners (13 games): After a win on Aug. 2, the California Angels led Seattle by 13 in the AL West and Texas by 11. Then the Angels went 22-34 the rest of the way while the Mariners were 36-20. When the teams met in a one-game playoff, it was a 9-1 blowout in Seattle's favor, and although wild cards were in the playoffs for the first time, California couldn't even salvage one of those.
2012 Oakland Athletics (13 games): Fresh off two straight pennants, the Texas Rangers led the Angels by 6 1/2 and the A's by 13 at the end of June. But Oakland went 33-13 down the stretch, forcing the Rangers to settle for a wild card.
1973 New York Mets (12 1/2 games): Tug McGraw's famous phrase — 'Ya gotta believe!' — was a rallying cry of this comeback. New York was 12 1/2 back in early July and still in last place in late August, but the Mets took a weak NL East with an 82-79 record and then beat Cincinnati to win the pennant.
2006 Minnesota Twins (12 1/2 games): Detroit was 35-14 and led the Twins by over a dozen games, but there was enough time left for Minnesota to edge the Tigers in the AL Central when Detroit dropped five in a row to end the regular season. Although there are similarities between 2006 and this year, the good news for the Tigers is that they did make the World Series that season as a wild card.

The New York Mets led Milwaukee 5-0 in the fourth inning Sunday, but nobody who has watched those two teams recently should have been shocked when the Brewers chipped away and eventually won 7-6 on a solo homer by Isaac Collins in the bottom of the ninth.

Milwaukee, which had a win probability of 7.1% in the fourth according to Baseball Savant, has won nine in a row to take a five-game lead over the Phillies and Blue Jays for baseball's best record. The Mets, on the other hand, have dropped seven straight and lead Cincinnati by only 1 1/2 games for the National League's final wild card.

The game was halted with two outs in the top of the ninth by a fast-moving pocket of showers. Key moment Torkelson's ninth-inning homer would've landed many rows up the left-field stands had it gone a few feet right. All the same, the big hit proved to be the winner. Evoaldi's impressive streak for Rangers ends by giving up 3 homers and 5 runs
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi's impressive streak for the Texas Rangers ended with a dud. After going 6-0 with a 0.47 ERA in six starts since the start of July, Eovaldi was tagged for three home runs while allowing season highs of five runs and eight hits in five innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. The 35-year-old right-hander struck out three and walked one before exiting with Texas down 5-1. Eovaldi had given up only six runs total over his previous seven starts, and half of those runs came in the same game. There had only been two long balls against him his past 14 games. When he pitched one-hit ball over eight innings in a 2-0 win over the New York Yankees last Tuesday, it was the 13th time in a 14-game span allowing one or zero runs. Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson is the only pitcher since 1900 to record that kind of streak, according to STATS, and he did it in 1968, the season he won both the NL Cy Young and MVP awards. Even though Evoladi's overall ERA rose from 1.38 to 1.71, that is still better than the 1.94 of qualified MLB leader Paul Skenes. The AL leader is reigning Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal at 2.35. Eovaldi, who missed most of June with elbow inflammation, has thrown 116 innings in the Rangers' 120 games. Pitchers need one inning per team game to qualify as a league leader. Scuffling Cubs visit AL East-leading Blue Jays

After losing 3-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, the Cubs are 10-11 since the All-Star break and have averaged just 4.1 runs per game while the surging Milwaukee Brewers have taken command of the National League Central. While 4.1 runs per game isn't awful, it's a far cry from the 5.3 runs the Cubs averaged prior to the All-Star Game. One Cub who's not responsible for the slowdown is rookie third baseman Matt Shaw. After hitting a two-run homer on Sunday, he has three home runs in his past four games and seven in 63 plate appearances since the All-Star break. He owns a .328/.349/.770 slash line with 15 RBIs in his 20 games since the break. 'We should all be really proud of what Matt has done this year,' said Cubs manager Craig Counsell. Shaw hit .198/.276/.280 with two homers and 15 RBIs in 63 games before the All-Star break. 'We've talked about Matt so much this year, of what the mechanics are and this and that,' said Cubs hitting coach Dustin Kelly. 'What I've seen from him the most is just the intent to hit the ball really hard. And I think a lot of that has just come with confidence and comfort.' The Cubs, who lost two of three in St. Louis, will complete their six-game road trip against the Blue Jays, who are returning from a 4-2 trip. The Blue Jays avoided a three-game sweep by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday with a 5-4 victory. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Addison Barger hit home runs in the eighth and Ernie Clement's blast in the ninth proved to be the winner. 'This is what you play for,' said Toronto manager John Schneider. 'You try to put yourselves in those moments and you try to slow it down a little bit, hopefully knowing that you are going to be in those again.' Despite dominating the Rockies last week, the Blue Jays have lost eight of their past 14. The Blue Jays are expected to start right-hander Jose Berrios (8-4, 3.89 ERA), who is 1-2 with a 6.20 ERA in 20 1/3 innings over four career starts against the Cubs. Right-hander Ben Brown (5-7, 6.04) is Chicago's probable starter. He has not faced the Blue Jays. Toronto could have second baseman Andres Gimenez back from a sprained ankle by Tuesday. Outfielder George Springer (concussion) is still out. The Blue Jays also could have a better idea of how right-hander Shane Bieber, who has been on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Buffalo, might fit into their rotation. He pitched Saturday against Toledo and allowed two runs and four hits over 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts and one walk. The Cubs are expecting right-hander Jameson Taillon to return soon from a strained calf.
