Evoaldi's impressive streak for Rangers ends by giving up 3 homers and 5 runs
After going 6-0 with a 0.47 ERA in six starts since the start of July, Eovaldi was tagged for three home runs while allowing season highs of five runs and eight hits in five innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. The 35-year-old right-hander struck out three and walked one before exiting with Texas down 5-1.
Eovaldi had given up only six runs total over his previous seven starts, and half of those runs came in the same game. There had only been two long balls against him his past 14 games.
When he pitched one-hit ball over eight innings in a 2-0 win over the New York Yankees last Tuesday, it was the 13th time in a 14-game span allowing one or zero runs. Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson is the only pitcher since 1900 to record that kind of streak, according to STATS, and he did it in 1968, the season he won both the NL Cy Young and MVP awards.
Even though Evoladi's overall ERA rose from 1.38 to 1.71, that is still better than the 1.94 of qualified MLB leader Paul Skenes. The AL leader is reigning Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal at 2.35.
Eovaldi, who missed most of June with elbow inflammation, has thrown 116 innings in the Rangers' 120 games. Pitchers need one inning per team game to qualify as a league leader.
Arizona's first five batters were retired before rookie first baseman Tyler Locklear homered on a 402-foot shot to left field in the second inning.
Jake McCarthy opened the third with a double and Corbin Carrol followed with his 26th homer, a shot that ricocheted off the right-field pole. Ketel Marte was then hit by a pitch on his left elbow before Geraldo Perdomomo's 12th homer made it 5-0.

Eovaldi benefitted from double plays in both the fourth and fifth to avoid giving up any more runs after Arizona also had hits in both those innings. The Diamondbacks were coming off a 17-hit game in their 13-6 win at home over Colorado on Sunday, when they set a franchise record with nine consecutive hits in the fifth inning — all with two outs.
Only four MLB pitchers since 1920 had a lower ERA than the 1.38 for Eovaldi in the first 19 starts of a season, with Gibson's 1.06 for St. Louis in 1968 the lowest.
This is Eovaldi's third season with the Rangers, who gave him the $100,000 All-Star bonus that is in his contract even though he was left off the American League All-Star team last month.

Bengals plan to make Canadian running back Chase Brown a focal point of the offense in 2025
CINCINNATI (AP) — After being one of the league's top running backs in the second half of last season, the Cincinnati Bengals are looking for Canadian Chase Brown to be an even bigger focal point this season. 'I believe Chase Brown is a top-10 back in the league,' offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher said. 'Certainly, you don't want to burn the guy out. You also want to make sure your most explosive players are on the field and ready to touch the ball as many times as possible.' Between Week 9 through Week 17 last season, Brown ranked fifth in the league in yards from scrimmage and third in touches. The London, Ont., native missed the season finale at Pittsburgh because of an ankle injury. At this point last year, Brown was the team's backup running back behind Zack Moss. Then, as Brown improved his ability as a pass catcher out of the backfield, he started earning more snaps. He took advantage of the opportunity and ran with it, and Brown finished the season with 1,350 scrimmage yards (990 yards rushing, 360 receiving yards). This year, Brown said that he feels stronger, more confident as a rusher and even more dependable as a pass catcher. He had 54 receptions last season after only 14 as a rookie in 2023. 'Sometimes, I think about the stretch I've had and the improvements that I've made,' Brown said. 'I try to just stay in the moment. As cliche as it sounds. As much as I am thinking ahead sometimes, I'm really trying to just stay in the moment and focus on what plays I can make right now. The improvements I can make at practice. Learning opportunities I can take away and learn from right now so when Week 1 comes, we're full speed.' Brown followed up what's been a strong training camp with a strong performance in last Thursday's preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. He ran the ball five times for 26 yards, and caught three passes for 25 yards over the course of his two series with the first-team offense. The Bengals scored on their first two possessions with Joe Burrow and the first unit on the field, but ended up losing 34-27. Cincinnati's second preseason game is Monday night at Washington. 'With the speed and the way he's able to use it coming out of the backfield, I don't think he really gets credit for the way he actually runs the ball,' said Bengals safety Geno Stone, who faced Brown in 2023 when Stone was in Baltimore. 'He's a guy who can run the ball between the tackles or outside of the tackles. He has really good balance. When he hits the hole and gets through, he's gone.' The Bengals are redesigning their run scheme this year around Brown's strengths. Heading into 2025, the Bengals coaching staff had a series of meetings to determine how they wanted the run game to evolve. 'At the end of the conversation, it wasn't about what we think looks good on the board,' running backs coach Justin Hill said. '(It was) what is Chase good at? Create Account Superior Court Judge Robert Broadie vacated and dismissed their convictions late last week following a January hearing in Forsyth County. Nathaniel Arnold Cauthen, Rayshawn Denard Banner, Christopher Levon Bryant and Jermal Matthew Tolliver had been found guilty in trials in 2004 or 2005 for the killing of Nathaniel Jones. The four were all 14 or 15 years old when they and another teen were arrested. Jones, 61, died from a heart attack outside his Winston-Salem home after being tied up, beaten and robbed. A three-judge panel previously had denied the defendants' innocence claims after testimony in a 2022 hearing. But Broadie's order, filed Friday, cited recanted testimony from a key witness, poor legal representation and questionable actions by police, the Winston-Salem Journal reported. DNA profiles also 'further serve to corroborate Defendants' assertions that their confessions were false' and that they 'were not present at the scene of the crime,' the judge wrote. Paul, Jones' grandson, was a standout high school basketball player at the time of the assault and had committed to play at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. Paul, now 40, is a 12-time NBA All-Star who now plays for the Los Angeles Clippers. Attorney General Jeff Jackson's office, whose lawyers defend criminal cases on appeal, asked the state Court of Appeals on Monday to halt enforcement of Broadie's order 'while we review it and consider next steps,' spokesperson Nazneen Ahmed said. Cauthen and his brother, Banner, were convicted of first-degree murder and are serving life sentences. Bryant, Tolliver and Dorrell Brayboy were convicted of second-degree murder and were released after serving prison time. Brayboy was fatally stabbed outside a Winston-Salem supermarket in 2019. Monday's petition by a state attorney said that, without action, Cauthen and Banner 'will be released back into the community without this Court having an opportunity to hear and determine the State's issues on appeal.' Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill criticized Broadie's ruling, in particular his dismissals of the cases 'with prejudice,' which could make them harder to appeal. 'I have never seen that happen before in a court of law,' O'Neill said in a statement to the newspaper. 'Most judges welcome scrutiny and appellate review of their decisions.' Christine Mumma, the lawyer for Banner and Cauthen, pushed back on criticism of the judge's ruling. 'If the General Assembly didn't want judges to have the authority to dismiss with prejudice, they wouldn't have given judges that authority,' Mumma wrote in an email. 'They also wouldn't have passed statutes recognizing if charges are dismissed with prejudice, there's no right of appeal.'
