Tremors felt in Sabah after strong 6.1-magnitude quake in Sulawesi

KOTA KINABALU: Several districts in Sabah, including Tawau, Lahad Datu and Semporna, reported tremors on Saturday (May 3) night following a strong earthquake in the Minahassa Peninsula, Sulawesi.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the 6.1-magnitude quake struck at 8.51pm at a depth of 10km. Its epicentre was located about 165km west of Gorontalo, Indonesia.
MetMalaysia confirmed there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
In Tawau, the Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 9.11pm. A five-member team from the Tawau fire station, led by PBK I Sulaiman Md Salleh, was deployed and arrived at the location within two minutes.
The team carried out inspections at key premises including the hospital, hotels, banks, petrol stations and surrounding areas. No structural damage was found.
The department also noted that a weak tremor was detected 28km from Tawau at 9.51pm.
On social media, Tawau residents shared their experiences.
Facebook user Nur Ain Abdul Wahit wrote that she felt the tremors at 8.53pm.
'It started with a thunder-like sound, then the windows and house shook for a few seconds. I was almost asleep when I felt it,' she said, adding that she even messaged her friend in the living room to confirm it was an earthquake.
Another user, Fauziah Haili Suhaili, said her house felt like it was swaying.
'I shouted at my daughter to come out of the room after I saw the fan swinging side to side. May we all stay protected,' she posted.
The public is advised to remain calm and follow verified updates via MetMalaysia's official website or the MyCuaca app.

The entire areas of Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan are expected to be affected, along with Kerian, Larut, Matang, Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Manjung, Kinta and Perak Tengah in Perak; Kelantan (Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai); and Terengganu (Besut, Setiu, Dungun and Kemaman). In addition, Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Jerantut, Bentong, Kuantan and Rompin in Pahang will be affected, along with Selangor (Gombak, Petaling and Hulu Langat), Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu) and Johor (Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru). Over in East Malaysia, the interior of Sabah (Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau and Tambunan), the West Coast, Sandakan (Beluran) and Kudat are expected to be affected, as well as Kuching (Bau and Kuching), Serian, Samarahan, Sibu, Mukah (Matu, Dalat and Mukah), Kapit (Song, Kapit and Bukit Mabong), Bintulu (Tatau) and Limbang. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm, heavy rain and strong winds warning in most states, effective until 11 am today. In a statement, MetMalaysia said the states affected are Kedah, involving Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda and Sik, as well as several areas in Penang, namely the southwest and northwest of Penang Island and north Seberang Perai. Similar weather conditions are also forecast in Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk and Hilir Perak in Perak, as well as Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat and Sepang in Selangor. The warning was also issued for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan (Seremban, Port Dickson and Rembau), Melaka, Johor (Tangkak) and Sabah (Tawau and Semporna). — Bernama

The district located 130km north of the state capital Kota Kinabalu has received nine alerts since January. They comprise eight Level 1 Alerts and one Level 2 Alert, according to figures from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia). Limbang in Sarawak received the second highest number of alerts (8) and followed by Machang in Kelantan (6). Six locations each recorded five heat alerts, namely Baling (Kedah), Kampar (Perak), Marudi and Sibu (Sarawak), and Sandakan and Telupid (Sabah). A Level 1 (Yellow) alert is issued when the temperature in a particular location hits between 35 to 37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days. A Level 2 (Orange) alert means a location is in a heatwave with temperatures going above 37 but remaining below 40 degrees Celsius. A Level 3 (Red) alert means a location is in an extreme heatwave with a temperature of more than 40 degrees Celsius. MetMalaysia's data shows Sabah topping the list of states with the highest number of alerts this so far year at 35. This was followed by Sarawak (29) and Kedah (17). Last year saw Kedah with the highest number of alerts for January to August at 472, followed by Kelantan (274) and Pahang (188). In total, fewer heat alerts have been issued this year compared to the same period last year. A total of 121 heat alerts have been issued since Jan this year. In comparison, 2024 saw 1,597 alerts from January to August 3. The Star reported on Tuesday (Aug 5) that seven out of the 43 dams in Peninsula Malaysia have reached critical levels, with one at warning level. Authorities have already begun cloud seeding operations at the Bukit Merah dam in Perak, which has seen water levels drop drastically.
