Games Inbox: How would you improve Mario Kart World?

Constructive criticism
I've really been enjoying Mario Kart World but there is a few tweak/options I would like to see. The obvious one is three lap races, but they need to reduce the players to 12 in that mode, as 24 is just too chaotic on small courses. Also, I would like to see the options back that can turn what weapons you want on/off in private matches, as I feel some are too overpowered.
The last thing is they need to improve the battle mode, it hasn't been good since Mario Kart 64 and I couldn't put my finger on it till I played it again. In Mario Kart 64 karts turn really sharp, so you can spin round quickly to attack or change direction, in Mario Kart World the karts feel sluggish in turning and it takes an age to turn round, making it frustrating.
Maybe they need to add a handbrake option but then I realised that all the karts feel like that, even when racing on some sharp circuits. All the karts struggle to turn sharp, even when you slow down, so I feel all the karts need a handling tweak. But even with these issues I can't stop playing the Knockout Tour mode, it's got that one more go because I think I can do better.

Old/new blood
I would be absolutely fine with someone else making a new Fallout, or The Elder Scrolls for that matter. Bethesda broke the mould with The Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3 but all those games are very old now and they've not done anything as good since. In fact, they've barely done anything at all since.
Apart from New Vegas 2 by Obsidian. I think my dream project would probably be Fallout set in Russia by one of these new start-ups founded by ex-BioWare or CD Projekt devs. There seems to be plenty of them about nowadays and I'd hope they'd be able to combine some old school experience with new ideas from a hungrier team.

Something tells me Todd Howard will drag his heels though and this chance to expand things won't be the opportunity it should've been.

It's happening again
So we're probably going to see the hype for the PlayStation 6 and next gen Xbox building next year, right? Possibly even an official reveal for one or both. I'm not going to bother saying it's too soon, because I assume that's what everyone's thinking, but what is this going to mean for new game releases?
Sony has already slowed to a crawl so are they just going to give up entirely and try and start with a fresh sheet? Could Microsoft be thinking of holding things like Fable back, maybe that's why we haven't seen it properly yet. Maybe they'll even make it an exclusive again, not that I think they should.
Although I think this will happen, I hope it doesn't because I don't want to go through the whole circus of reveals, pre-orders, bad launch line-ups, and two years of middling games before they get into gear. It always happens and we don't need it again so soon.

The next reveal
It's quite perplexing to nail down when the next trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 will be announced. But since the game is set to release in May 2026, surely it could be either January or March at the latest? Personally, as long as it includes a release date and a gameplay reveal, since we've yet to actually see any footage nad we've only seen the backdrop of Vice City, Jason and Lucia's reveals, and not much else.
I'm hoping personally to see more from the numerous rural areas of Vice City. If there's any wacky characters to meet, the pastimes, and hobbies. If we'll see surfing and beach activities, for example. Maybe even throw in a strip club as well.
I'd also like to see how the wanted system works. Will an army response be warranted, after the maximum wanted level is achieved, like the old titles, or is it more realistic? I'm just very much anticipating the gameplay reveal and to see if it's a change from GTA 5, or maybe it's just a similar follow-up. With the delays I expect interstellar quality.
As far as my gaming life is concerned, I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed Shadows on PlayStation 5. So far, so good.

Marry and reproduce
Anyone remember when people were defending the Activision Blizzard acquisition and rubbishing people who said there'd be job cuts? We don't hear from those people much anymore, huh?
And now the other obvious thing has been proven: Microsoft wants to replace everyone with AI. Because I know I can't wait to play a game where the story and level design was created by a puffed up autocorrect.
For some reason I can't help but think of the John Carpenter film They Live. I used to think that message was too blunt and comical but as time goes on you realise that consumerism really is that blatant. Just take everything companies throw at you and never question authority.

Direct requirements
Count me as one of those also desperate for a Nintendo Direct… and I haven't even upgraded to the Switch 2 yet. To say the console launch has been a disappointment is obviously ridiculous, it's only been out a month, Mario Kart has reviewed well (though there is a surprisingly about of discourse around it) and the machine is selling like hot cakes.
However, the lack of nailed on releases dates, news over third party support, and Nintendo's big franchises AWOL has me a little worried. Like a letter the other day said, I was expecting Nintendo to come out firing their big cannons not the staid rollout we've seen.
The varying quality of the ports so far also has me concerned; Cyberpunk 2077 looks good for a handheld… but it is a noticeable step down on PlayStation 5 from what I've seen in side by sides. Hitman is a poor effort and Wild Hearts S dropped last week with shocking results, looking worse than the five-year-old Monster Hunter Rise on the original Switch.
You might expect this from a new format, but I haven't yet upgraded to PlayStation 5 either (like the Reader's Feature at the weekend, I'm stuck on last gen completely, with Switch and a PlayStation 4) and looking at the current situation on Switch 2 does have me thinking ,'Why wouldn't I just get a PlayStation 5?'. I mean I could be playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth or Baldur's Gate 3 out of the box next week, instead of keeping fingers crossed for inferior Switch 2 editions however many years down the road.
Nintendo will be able to ride out the year (and probably next) with upgrading super fans… but need to do more to entice the next level down of Switch user to invest.
Marc
GC: Third party support for the Switch 1 was very poor and yet it could end up as the best-selling console of all time. The Switch 2 already seems to be doing better in the regard, assuming the current issues don't linger.
Zero information
What happened to that Star Wars XCOM game? Zero Company. I was really looking forward to that, but we still haven't got any real gameplay or sign of when it's coming out. I don't mind a teaser a long time before a game comes out, but I do like at least a hint of when that'll be. Have we had all the Star Wars events this year, is that what we're waiting for?
I'm really hoping for EA to comment on Star Wars Battlefront 3 too. I love that Battlefront 2 is having a moment but I have no idea if a new sequel could happen.
Sausegg
GC: We've had Star Wars Day and Star Wars Celebration already this year, so there's really no way to guess when it will be show again. Maybe Gamescom or The Game Awards.
To grind or not to grind
In regards to game difficulty, I don't think there's ever going to be a consensus on if games should always have difficulty levels or not, but there's something else that has been bugging me since playing Lies Of P and that's levelling up characters.
In Lies Of P you collect ergo as you defeat enemies, which you then exchange to increase your character's ability. This ultimately means you just replay levels until you've the boss has got easy enough to beat. The game has no difficulty setting, but any concept of the boss being an intentional difficulty level by the developer is lost.
It's a similar situation in Clair Obscur, except that game also lets you pick a difficulty setting too. I'm awful at parrying, so when it got to bosses I had no chance with I made it easier (which I'm very thankful for). But later in the game I noticed recommended levels, that different guides were suggesting, were around 10 levels higher than what I was on. So, after replaying some of them I realised the levels people were suggesting make the boss fights easier than mainlining it on the difficulty below.
These are far from the first games to be set up like this. I'm sure most of us as some point have got completely stuck on a boss, looked it up on YouTube and found everyone else has a health bar twice the size.
Personally, I'd rather games let you pick a difficulty level that gives the right challenge for your ability followed by the satisfaction that you achieved it. Otherwise, you defeat a boss, but did you really do it, or have you levelled so far you're now in story mode?
Tim
GC: We mean… that's the whole nature of role-playing games, especially more old school ones.

I would absolutely love it if Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 convinced Square Enix to make the next mainline Final Fantasy turn-based. I can't see it though, they'll chicken out and overcomplicate it.

Games Inbox: Is there a secret Nintendo Switch 2 Christmas game?

The Monday letters page thinks Battlefield 6 could be a big hit this autumn, as one reader hopes Final Fantasy 17 will be more like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ Summer to winter I see there's still a lot of talk about whether Nintendo has a 'secret' new Switch 2 game for this Christmas but I will be absolutely shocked if they do. We're probably getting a Nintendo Direct this week, that I can believe, but what are people expecting? Animal Crossing or a new Mario? I don't see it. The new Mario is never going to come out straight after Donkey Kong, it's much more likely going to be left for the new movie next year. And while they might tease Animal Crossing, they're not going to release it this year, no way. Why not? Because normal people don't buy new video game consoles in the middle of the summer. Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza are Nintendo's big Christmas games. They may not be secrets, but they are just about the most mass market games they have and they don't even need anything else, especially not with Metroid Prime 4 and Pokémon Legends out this year. There might be some small game or port or something like that, but I am certain there won't be any more big new games until next year. Taylor Moon In the wings I think people are underestimating Battlefield 6 a bit. Battlefield was huge up until Battlefield 4 and if EA hadn't messed up it could have overtaken Call Of Duty as everyone's favourite military shooter. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. I don't know if Call Of Duty is in too deep now but you don't have to overthrow it to still be a massive hit. I like what I'm hearing about Battlefield 6 so far and I think it could be massive. Although it does depend what this year's Call Of Duty will be like, but if it's a dud then EA are right there able to take advantage of Activision's mistake. Lotto Pre-word of mouth Would just like to agree with the Reader's Feature about Star Wars Outlaws. It's a really great game and I feel it was victim to everyone assuming it would be bad and never bothering to find out whether it was or not. This sort of thing happens a lot, it seems to me, where a game (or movie) is killed by online word of mouth before anyone has actually played it. I'm not saying the game is an all-time classic but as only a moderate Star Wars fan I had a lot of fun with it and agree it's Ubisoft's best open world game in a long time. There're some neat little improvements to the formula going on and I can only hope they at least make it into other non-Star Wars games. I would absolutely recommend it, especially if you can find it cheap. Lomas Email your comments to: gamecentral@ Survival plan Survival crafting games aren't my usual fair but when there's a neat setting at the centre I've been drawn in and not been disappointed, having thought both Subnautica and Grounded were fantastic. Abiotic Factor's full release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC has just been made known to me as it's been added day one (for the 1.0 release) on both Game Pass and PS Plus Extra. The setting looks like my cup of tea and the mentions of Half-Life when reading up about it have pretty much put it to the top of my list for next game. Shame it comes out a week or so before Grounded 2 early access. I had intended to play that, but I really want to give Abiotic Factor a play so will probably wait for Grounded 2 1.0 to play that game. It's for one to six players. I'll probably play it solo but as is increasingly happening due to barriers between Sony and Microsoft being lowered its cross play, so don't have to worry about starting it on PlayStation (my preferred choice) and not being able to play with my Xbox owning family members. Simundo Budget limitations I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that keeps hoping a new Nintendo Direct will see a new Castlevania annoucement. There's no reason to hope for it except that it seems impossible that it won't happen at some point… but it never does. I understand that finding a developer for it is a difficult, but if MercurySteam aren't available there are plenty of other indie developers that I'm sure would do a good job of it. The main problem is whether Konami is willing to put up the budget to make a good one. Even the best developer can only work with the limits they've got and you have to go back to the PS1 era to find a Castlevania with a decent sized budget. Ingot Fightin' IP I notice there's a lot of licensed beat 'em-ups and fighting games around at the moment, from that Invincible game to a new Marvel fighter and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel scrolling beat 'em-ups. I approve of all of this, but I don't particularly like any of the franchises that are getting turned into the games. I'm curious what other people would like to see made into these type of games? I'm sure GC would be happy to see a Transformers game, which I feel could work as either, but somehow that's never been done before. A one-on-one fighter seems like it would be a no-brainer, considering everyone has their own special abilities and weapons and transformations. Or how about a Lord of the Rings beat 'em-up? I really liked the ones EA did when the movies first came out and I'd love something that was able to be a little more tongue in cheek with the franchise. I think the Tolkien family stop that from happening but that'd be my wish, and they did allow the Lego game. Or maybe a Roger Rabbit beat 'em-up? Something that had all sorts of old school animated cartoon characters in it, from Disney, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, and so on. I bet companies would love to make those characters relevant again and I'd love to see that kind of thing. I'm going to stop now because I'm already upset that these things are never going to happen. Gable GC: There was a Beast Wars fighting game, but it was rubbish. Modern experiment I like the idea of CD Projekt making a beat 'em-up style game specifically because they're not very good at melee combat usually. I don't know if that'll end up being true, but it seems like a good idea. Considering they've done fantasy and sci-fi so far, I'd like to see them do something set in the current day too, as a change. The longer games take to make the less chance developers have to try new things, because they're always forced to go back to make sequels. Hopefully CD Projekt have enough money and feel this game would be a good experience that will help their others as well. Tyremate Expedition 34 I can't believe we're looking at the possibility where the people that made Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 really might be working on, or at least advising on, Final Fantasy 17. I am 100% behind them being involved but it seems incredible that Square Enix is so out of ideas that they need to rely on someone else that was already paying homage to their games. In case you haven't heard, the developer went and met with Square Enix for an exchange of ideas, or something like that, but it's pretty obvious what they were talking about. At a minimum they must've been discussing the idea of them working on some kind of spin-off but I'm certain the question of Final Fantasy 17 came up as well. I don't think anything has leaked out about it so far, so it can't be very far along, but I would absolutely love to see something that was more in line with the pre-Final Fantasy 7 games. Something turn-based and with a traditional fantasy setting, not sci-fi or the boring Game of Thrones knock-off that was the last game. Who knows how likely it is, but I feel there's now a real chance that Final Fantasy can be exciting again, and not ashamed of its own history. Egon Inbox also-rans Never mind Mario and Peach, what's the deal with Luigi and Daisy? I know her as Luigi's girlfriend but I don't actually remember any games where they're both in it, other than sports ones. Choser GC: We think it might have happened in a Japanese manga or something. We don't recall any game that makes it clear they have a relationship. Never mind Star Wars Outlaws 2, where is the third Star Wars Jedi game? Are we going to have to wait till next Star Wars Day for it to be announced? I think probably. Video game exclusives are dying as PlayStation plans new Xbox and Switch ports

As rumours claim Gears Of War: E-Day is coming to PS5, and Sony confirms more multiformat releases, the era of video game exclusives appears to be coming to an end. For 40 years the primary selling point for video game consoles has been the exclusive games that they play host to. As Xbox has acknowledged, things changed during the previous generation, when digital downloads began to dominate and switching formats no longer became a trivial matter. Nobody wants to leave behind their library of games on another console and while the PlayStation 4 still had plenty of high-profile exclusives, by the time the PlayStation 5 arrived fans were already locked into the PlayStation ecosystem. Given the increasing cost of making games, exclusives must've begun to seem like an expensive and unnecessary indulgence to Sony execs. But now it seems they're taking things a step further, with plans to release more of their internally developed games on other formats. One of the most frustrating aspects of Sony's change in approach is that they've never explained anything publicly. The above is all speculation and while it's almost certainly accurate, Sony has never acknowledged a change in plans or discussed why they've released so few exclusives in the second half of this generation – or why they're so obsessed with live service titles. That too can easily be guessed at, but it seems their plans are shifting even further, with a recently discovered job ad asking for someone to 'play a critical leadership role in shaping and executing the global commercial strategy for PlayStation Studios software titles across all digital platforms beyond PlayStation hardware, including Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, Nintendo, and mobile.' As the ad puts it: 'This role is accountable for optimising title profitability, ensuring cross-functional alignment, and leading a high-performing team focused on multiplatform expansion, mid-range commercial planning, and platform partner management.' Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Naturally, no examples are given but while it's still unlikely that recent PlayStation 5 exclusives will appear on other formats, other than the PC, Sony has recently ramped up its multiformat efforts with the release of former PSP exclusive Patapon on Nintendo Switch and the promise of Everybody's Golf to follow. Clearly these are very low-profile franchises, but while they and last year's Lego Horizon Adventures purposefully skipped the Xbox, live service games Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox Series X/S next month. There's no suggestion that this new role will mean God Of War or The Last Of Us turning up on Xbox overnight, or indeed ever, but the older some exclusives get the more likely it becomes, at least on Nintendo formats – which Sony has long insisted are not direct rivals. For now, the newly advertised role is still likely to focus on older games and live service titles but even that would have been unthinkable even just five years ago, at the beginning of the generation. As far as Nintendo is concerned, exclusives are their life blood and it is certainly impossible to imagine any of their games appearing on other formats, but for Sony exclusives are an increasingly minor consideration, that are no longer profitable enough when released on only one format. This is a truth that Xbox has already realised, especially given how poor Xbox Series X/S hardware sales have been compared to the PlayStation 5. More Trending Microsoft hasn't been very open about their plans either, but it already seems clear there's nothing that won't eventually be released on PlayStation 5. So it's no surprise to find that just as the Sony job ad appears there's rumours of Gears Of War: E-Day and State Of Decay 3 also coming to Sony's format. Website MP1st has found résumés and job ads that seem to confirm both games being multiformat, although whether there'd be a short delay after the initial Xbox and PC release, as there was with Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, is unknown. There were many ways to cope with the increasing cost of making triple-A games but, perhaps predictably, Microsoft and Sony have made no attempt to decrease budgets and have instead sought to increase their revenues by increasing the number of places their games can be bought and played. That's not necessarily a bad thing but there's not yet any sign that Sony will start making more exclusives, whether they're multiformat or not. If that had been the case then most fans would likely welcome Sony's new approach with open arms. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. Woman, 18, suffers 'life-changing' injuries after hair is caught in funfair ride

A young woman has been left with injuries described as 'life-changing' after her hair was caught in a Fun House ride at a rural funfair. The 18-year-old was reportedly on the oscillating floor section of the attraction at Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show in Hampshire at around 11pm on Saturday when she fell over. Emma Perry, a heart failure nurse at Southampton General Hospital, told the Daily Echo newspaper the woman's 'hair got caught in the rollers on the floor'. She said: 'Her friend came off the ride and said she was bleeding, so I offered my services as a first aider. 'When I got up there, I saw that three quarters of the girl's scalp had been ripped off in what we call a degloving incident.' Emma added: 'I stayed with her, that is all I did really. I really feel for her and her family, they are the main priority.' Emergency services were called to the scene and the teenager was taken to hospital for treatment. The ride has now been closed for the remainder of the show, which is due to come to an end today. More Trending Charles Cole, who runs the event, described the incident as a 'freak accident' and said it was under investigation. He told the Echo: 'Nobody wants to hurt anyone, and we are a family business. Last night was very upsetting, especially for the man who owns the ride. 'Safety is our priority, and we sympathise with the girl and her parents.' The Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show has taken place annually in the small Hampshire village of Netley Marsh since 1971.
