Indiana Fever sign veteran guard Odyssey Sims to hardship contract

USA Today5 days ago
The Indiana Fever announced on Sunday that the team has signed veteran forward Odyssey Sims to a hardship contract following the season-ending injuries to Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald, opening up a roster spot through their qualified hardship waivers.
Sims, a former No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft, has averaged 11.2 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game throughout her 11-year WNBA career. During her winding WNBA journey, she has spent time with the Tulsa Shock (2014-15), Dallas Wings (2016, 2023-24), Los Angeles Sparks (2017-18, 2024-25), Minnesota Lynx (2019-20, 2022), Atlanta Dream (2021), and Connecticut Sun (2022).
Her best season of her career so far was in the 2019 campaign with the Lynx, where she was named to her first WNBA All-Star team and the All-WNBA Second Team. During that season, Sims averaged 14.5 points on 41.5% from the field to go along with a career-high 5.4 assists, career-high 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 0.1 blocks on 31:54 minutes per game through 34 contests.
As a collegiate athlete, Sims played at Baylor University, where she was a part of the 2012 NCAA National Championship team and earned Big 12 Player of the Year and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2014.
As Sims spent the first part of the 2025 season with the Sparks, where she averaged 9.8 points per game and 3.5 assists per game in 11 games started, she should provide a decent scoring boost and fill the void at the point guard position, with Caitlin Clark still recovering from a right groin injury.
As Sims is signed on a regular hardship contract, her status on the team is not necessarily tied to the 10-available player rule that governs emergency hardship contracts. This could create some roster "gymnastics" if certain additional moves are made, as the team technically has room for up to two hardship players with Colson and McDonald out for the season and Clark out now for more than three consecutive weeks.
If Sims is the only hardship player signed, the team is not required to release her once Clark returns. However, if the Fever decides to sign another hardship player, they would need to release either Sims or the second hardship player upon Clark's return.

UNC football to face SEC program in CBS Sports' first 2025 bowl projections

Which SEC team is UNC projected to face in a bowl game? Can you believe the start of college football is almost here? We'll get underway with Week 0 next weekend, then UNC will host TCU to cap off Week 1 on Labor Day. Bowl games won't be played until December, but it's never too early to start making projections. Due to North Carolina's somewhat favorable schedule, North Carolina is slated to play in a bowl game. In CBS Sports' first bowl projections ahead of the 2025 CFB season, the Tar Heels are projected to face Florida in the Gator Bowl. This would essentially be a road game for UNC, as the Gator Bowl is always played in Jacksonville's Everbank Stadium, which is just 90 minutes from UF. North Carolina has six-consecutive bowl appearances, but a horrible track record in those postseason contests, last winning a bowl game in 2019 against Temple. Bill Belichick is a much-better head coach than Mack Brown, though, so the hope is he'll have his players prepared. Given their young roster, the Tar Heels also shouldn't have many opt-outs after their regular-season concludes. If UNC ends up playing in the Gator Bowl, it'd be UNC's second trip to the Sunshine State this season. North Carolina travels to UCF on September 20. Florida is in a similar spot to that of the Tar Heels. 2024 was the Gators' first winning season since 2020, which ended in the rankings and a Cotton Bowl loss. Last year, Florida went 8-5 and beat Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl, its first bowl victory since 2019. Lynx getting along just fine while Collier recovers, with Carrington making seamless arrival

MINNEAPOLIS -- After coming so close to the WNBA championship last year, the Minnesota Lynx have picked right up where they left off. They sure weren't satisfied with the status quo, though, as evidenced by their recent acquisition of DiJonai Carrington. The Most Improved Player award winner and All-Defensive First Team selection in 2024 has bolstered the league leader's depth, injected a dose of two-way energy into an already determined club and made a seamless transition after the midseason switch. 'She's been a great addition,' starting forward Bridget Carleton said. 'Playing against her has always been a challenge. She's just feisty, competitive, always wants to win, plays hard every single possession.' Even with superstar Napheesa Collier sidelined by a sprained right ankle, the Lynx haven't missed a beat. They're in first place by six games at 27-5, surging toward the No. 1 overall seed for the playoffs. 'You just want to feel like you're a better team when she comes back into the team, that you've figured some things out, that people are playing with confidence,' associate head coach Eric Thibault said. 'Our group's attitude is right about it. Nobody feels sorry for ourselves or anything like that. We just go out and battle.' Carrington was acquired from the Dallas Wings on Aug. 3 for backup forward Diamond Miller, injured guard Karlie Samuelson and Minnesota's 2027 second-round draft pick.e Miller was the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, so Carrington came at a price. But president of basketball operations and head coach Cheryl Reeve, who's chasing a fifth title with Minnesota, has this team fully in win-now mode with Collier in her prime and an experienced lineup around her led by five-time All-Star shooting guard Kayla McBride, two-time All-Star point guard Courtney Williams and shot-blocking specialist Alanna Smith patrolling the post. 'I'm a winner, and this is a winning organization,' Carrington said. The 5-foot-11 native of San Diego, who played her first four WNBA seasons with the Connecticut Sun, was dealt to Dallas earlier this year. She averaged a career-best 5.1 rebounds in 20 games with the Wings. In three games since the trade, and coincidentally since Collier was injured, Carrington has 40 points, 12 rebounds and six steals. The Lynx take a five-game winning streak into their game on Saturday against the defending champion New York Liberty, whom they've already beaten twice this month in a measure of revenge for their overtime loss in New York last year in the decisive game of the WNBA Finals. In the previous round, when the Lynx beat the Sun in a five-game series, Reeve became enamored by Carrington, who had 17 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and one block in defeat in the decisive game of those semifinals. The chance this summer to acquire a defensive ace on the perimeter who could alleviate some of the burden on McBride as well as provide more scoring off the bench was one the Lynx couldn't miss. 'We felt like we could use a little bit more help as we made this run,' Reeve said. 'If you stay exactly the same, it's really hard to accomplish and get back and get over the hump, so we wanted to keep the group together — but we also thought we needed a little bit more.' Williams and Natisha Hiedeman played with Carrington with the Sun, so there was pre-existing chemistry. Smith was a teammate of Carrington's at Stanford, as well, so they were already close. 'It was like a friend coming home,' Smith said. 'That's kind of how it felt. I was excited. I think she's a piece that's really good for us and only going to help us get to the point we want to get to, which is a championship.'

Is Notre Dame football closing in on its quarterback decision? One pundit thinks so

The start of the season is getting closer, as Notre Dame is just over two weeks away from going on the road for a season-opening top-10 US LBM Coaches Poll matchup against the Miami Hurricanes. There are multiple starting spots that have yet to be announced, but the biggest one that we are all watching is who will be the starting quarterback: CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey. The is one insider that believes the choice could be made soon: On3's Tyler Horka. On Friday morning he posted a clip of both of them taking reps and said this weekend 'might be the one of the biggest of the year for Notre Dame' as they could be close to named its starting quarterback. All the current rumors have been that head coach Marcus Freeman, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli are leaning towards Minchey, but obviously no decision has been made. The Irish could wait another week to let it play out, or they could end the drama and announce the starter and get ready to prep for Miami. If they are pretty much even at this point, it makes more sense to continue the battle and give them time for the guy to emerge. It's going to be a tough choice, but one that will have to eventually be made for Notre Dame.
