Can Barrick Mining's $2B Lumwana Expansion Power a New Era of Growth?
The Super Pit expansion entails doubling the present process circuit's throughput and substantially boosting mining volumes. Upon completion, the project has the potential to transform Lumwana into a long-term, high-yielding, top-25 copper producer and Tier One copper mine.
The expansion project will double Lumwana's copper output to 240,000 tons annually, supported by a new processing plant with a capacity of 50 million tons per year. Construction at the site is in progress, long-lead equipment has been ordered and infrastructure improvements, including a new power transmission system in collaboration with ZESCO, are advancing to benefit both the mine and the surrounding region.
The advancements at Lumwana are significant for future growth as Barrick remains entangled in a dispute with the Malian government over dividing the economic benefits from its Loulo-Gounkoto gold mine complex. Barrick also remains on track with its other high-return growth projects, underscoring a disciplined strategy that could reshape its production profile over the next decade. These assets are poised to deliver significant, low-cost production growth, enhancing Barrick's diversification and free cash flow profile should it execute these on schedule and within budget.
Among its major peers, Newmont Corporation NEM continues to invest in growth projects in a calculated manner. Newmont is pursuing several projects, including Tanami Expansion 2 in Australia, the Ahafo North expansion in Ghana and Cadia Panel Caves in Australia. These projects should expand production capacity and extend mine life, driving Newmont's revenues and profits.
Agnico Eagle Mines Limited AEM is also making steady progress with its key value drivers and pipeline projects, including the Odyssey project in the Canadian Malartic Complex, Detour Lake, Hope Bay, Upper Beaver and San Nicolas. Agnico Eagle's Hope Bay project is expected to play a significant role in generating cash flow in the years to come. At Canadian Malartic, Agnico Eagle is advancing the transition to underground mining with the construction of the Odyssey mine and executing other opportunities to beef up annual production.

Barrick Mining reports rise is Q2 profits despite US$1-billion writedown on Mali mine
TORONTO — Barrick Mining Corp. took a US$1.04-billion charge in its second quarter related to its loss of control of a gold mine in Mali, but still reported a rise in profit thanks to higher gold prices and an asset sale. The Toronto-based mining company said Monday it earned US$811 million or 47 cents US per diluted share for the quarter ended June 30, up from US$370 million or 21 cents US per diluted share a year earlier. Profits rose as the price it sold its gold at was up 41 per cent from last year to US$3,295 an ounce. Gold prices have climbed in large part over instability fears raised by the economic policies of the U.S. Trump administration. The higher gold price was offset somewhat by the writedown on the value of its Loulo-Gounkoto mine in Mali, after a June ruling by a judge in the country that it be placed under provisional administration for six months. Barrick Gold has been in conflict with Mali's military rulers over alleged unpaid taxes and unfair contracts with past governments. The dispute culminated in an arrest warrant in December for Barrick CEO Mark Bristow and the company's offer to pay US$370 million to the government. Since then, the government has also arrested Barrick employees, who remain detained, and suspended gold exports, but Bristow said on an conference call Monday that there was still a potential to solve the impasse outside the arbitration process. 'We're not at that stage where we don't believe that we can, you know, find a resolution,' Bristow told the conference call to discuss the company's latest financial results. 'When you're engaging and talking, there's always an opportunity. Of course, there's been some activity in Mali, which complicates the process.' He said the company continues to manage the situation in a measured and constructive manner, continuing with arbitration as it works to find a path forward. While the Mali charge weighed on results, it was also balanced by US$745-million gain in the quarter from the sale of a 50 per cent interest in the Donlin gold project in Alaska. Since quarter end, the company has also announced the sale of its Alturas project in Chile for US$50 million, while it is also in talks to sell Hemlo, its last Canadian gold mine. Bristow said there's a lot of appetite for mines like Hemlo, while the company has added significant gold reserves in recent years to make it a good time to review its holdings. 'It makes sense to rationalize your portfolio from time to time,' he said. 'And it's a good time to do it when there are buyers out there in the market.' In its latest results, Barrick noted Hemlo, which produced 32,000 ounces in the quarter, is not considered a core part of its portfolio. On an adjusted basis, Barrick says it earned 47 cents US per share in its latest quarter, up from an adjusted profit of 32 cents US in the same quarter last year. The mean analyst estimate had been for earnings of 45 cents per share, according to LSEG Data & Analytics. Revenue for the quarter totalled US$3.68 billion, up from US$3.16 billion a year earlier. Gold production in the quarter totalled 797,000 ounces, down from 948,000 a year ago. Copper production totalled 59,000 tonnes, up from 43,000 tonnes a year ago. Overall results were mixed, said RBC analyst Josh Wolfson in a note, with operating results in line with expectations while financial results were noisy in part because of the asset sales. Lithium stocks rally as CATL mine halt raises prospects of tighter supply
A container of lithium carbonate sits in a shipping warehouse at a lithium facility, in Silver Peak, Nev., Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/AP-John Locher) Shares of lithium producers surged on Monday after Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) halting output at a major mine raised hopes it would erode the oversupply in a market grappling with soft demand. During morning trade, Albemarle Corp jumped 10.2 per cent, while Chile's Sociedad Quimica y Minera rose 9.2 per cent and Lithium Americas gained 2.4 per cent. Smaller companies, Standard Lithium, Piedmont Lithium and Sigma Lithium advanced between 6.2 per cent and 19.6 per cent. Chinese and Australian miners also rallied. The lithium sector has been struggling with a glut following weaker-than-anticipated growth in demand for electric vehicles. The most active lithium carbonate futures in Guangzhou rose the eight per cent daily limit after CATL said its mining license for the Yichun project in Jiangxi province expired on Aug. 9 and renewal was underway. The site can produce more than 46,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent a year, roughly three per cent of the global supply forecast for 2025, according to data from the Australian government. Morgan Stanley analysts said the outage could erode the small 60,000-tonne surplus it expects for 2025, bringing 'upside risk to lithium prices in the short term' and potentially moving the market closer to balance if other disruptions follow. Longer-term, they expect a surplus to re-emerge without further supply discipline. Morningstar analyst Vincent Sun said the suspension was 'an indication that the industry is taking proactive steps to contain further lithium price falls observed year-to-date.' With lithium prices now below the marginal cost of production, the move could be perceived as a positive driver to limit supply growth and rebalance the market, he said, but added it was 'still too early to confirm a price recovery trend for the rest of the year.'
