Can you spot the incredible feature on NRL team's new jersey that makes it a FIRST in the history of Australian sport?

Daily Mail6 days ago
A battling NRL club has released an Australian-first jersey for its final match of the season, but fans aren't overly happy about the final design and 'gimmicky' nature of the strip.
The North Queensland Cowboys will debut a Northern Lights jersey that glows in the dark for their final home game of the season.
Unveiled as part of the club's 30th anniversary, it's the first jersey of its kind in major Australasian sport.
Created with Dynasty Sport, the design blends the team's identity with modern technology.
Fluorescent ink means the jersey glows under blue UV light, with retail versions also featuring glow-in-the-dark silicone badges.
The jersey will make its on-field debut in Round 26 against the Brisbane Broncos on August 30.
But disgruntled fans, still fuming after the club was officially ruled out of NRL finals in its loss to the Cronulla Sharks last weekend, aren't impressed.
'Really don't like this one. Why glow in the dark too, like that's just a gimmick you're never really gonna see used,' one posted to a fan group.
Others said the jersey looks more like a Parramatta strip than a Cowboys one.
'OMG this is a gee up. Hindy will have a field day when we play Parra,' one posted.
Another commented: 'We are the blue and grey not blue and yellow'.
'Yeah, actually that would be a killer design for the Eels,' joked another.
The Cowboys have won just seven matches this season and have crashed to 13th on the NRL ladder, adding to the angst over the new jersey.
'What's the point of having a glow jersey if players won't light it up?' an unhappy Cowboys fan asked.
Cowboys fans are anything but thrilled at the idea of handing over their money for a one-off jersey as their team sits 13th on the ladder
'Another jersey the players don't respect the one they have,' accused another.
'It's not the jersey that needs updating. It's the bloody defence,' fumed yet another.
The Cowboys' shocking season has heaped pressure on coach Todd Payten, with former North Queensland star Josh Hannay linked to the club as his possible replacement if the axe falls.
Prop Coen Hess went into bat for his under-siege coach this week.
'There's always pressure. It's the NRL,' Hess said.
'But the onus is on us as players, Toddy and the coaching staff do a tremendous job throughout the week. He's not out there missing the tackles or letting in tries.
'The responsibility is on the players. We take out onto the field, they give us a good enough game plan and the onus is on us to go out there and execute it.
'From my point of view I don't think it's very warranted, the pressure on Toddy or the coaching staff. We've got to have a good hard look in the mirror ourselves and play up to the standards they set for us, and that we know we're capable of.'
His thoughts were echoed by second-rower Kai O'Donnell.
'We've been lapsing in concentration, I think pretty much the whole season we haven't put an 80-minute performance together,' O'Donnell said.
'It's hard to put a finger on it, but I think it just comes down to concentration. We've got to concentrate for the whole 80 minutes, not just periods of a game, because that's where it falls apart.
'It's all on us, us 17 players, to do that and no one else can do it for us. There's no coaches or anyone else that can do it, it's just on us.
'It's hard for me to speak on behalf of everyone, but I think it's just individually prepping. I feel like we get enough good prep during the week, and a good game plan to go out and implement into the game.
'It's just doing that. We talk about it but now it's just about putting those actions in and maintaining it for the whole 80 minutes.'

Warner's Ashes jibe 'part of the fun'

England batter Joe Root says David Warner's pre-Ashes sledge is "all part of the fun" and believes he is better placed than ever to score his first Test century in Australia this 34, continued his superb form this summer and will be key when England head to Australia in November to try and win the Ashes for the first time since has not scored a hundred in 14 Tests in Australia and, speaking to BBC Sport earlier this month, former Australia opener Warner said Root will have to "take the surfboard off his front leg" - a reference to the perception Root is regularly dismissed lbw."I can't have any control or say on how people see the game or talk in an interview," said Root. "It is irrelevant. "What more can I do about it? Just keep my surfboard out the way and make sure it is not a talking point in 100 days' time." Root and Warner will meet in The Hundred at Lord's on Thursday when the Englishman's Trent Rockets travel to play London if he will respond to Warner's jibes on the field, Root said: "I don't think so. "I guess it is all part of the fun right? We will see what happens but it is not really in my nature to get too verbal."While Root has never scored a century or won a Test in Australia, he has scored nine fifties and averages 35.68 - a respectable record although well below his career average of summer he scored 537 runs in five Tests against India and moved up to second in the all-time Test run-scorers' list behind only India legend Sachin Tendulkar."Having played in Austrlaia a couple of times before, now going with 150-odd Test caps under my belt, I feel I couldn't be more ready for it," said Root."The thing that stands out for me is I probably wanted it [a century] way too much the last couple of times. It took me away from what was important."Root added that there were "loads of other things to contend with" on the last two Ashes tours in Australia in 2021-22 and 2017-18, both of which the hosts won 4-0."There were a lot of distractions," said Root."I was captain, Covid [during the 2021-22 defeat], there was the Stokes incident the time before that, the Jonny [Bairstow] headbutt incident as well. "This time I want to just go and enjoy the tour for what it is. It is a beautiful country it is a great place to go and play cricket. "I know if I put my best performances in then everything else will look after itself."

NFL's most valuable teams are announced... and it's not a good look for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones

Cowboys fans upset at owner Jerry Jones' refusal to pay All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons should avoid Sportico's annual NFL team valuations, where Dallas ranks first overall for the sixth consecutive season. Valued at a whopping $12.8 billion, the Cowboys have been locked in a contract dispute with Parsons, who has demanded a trade while sitting out at Dallas training camp in Oxnard, California due to a back injury. Not only are the Cowboys believed to be the most valuable franchise in all of sports, but the team also has about $34 million in cap space to offer Parsons an extension. Instead, Jones has allowed the issue to boil over into a major distraction at camp. The contract dispute comes at a time when the Cowboys' NFC East rivals are all improving. Not only are the Philadelphia Eagles the reigning Super Bowl champions, but the Washington Commanders are coming off a resurgent 12-5 season that ended with an NFC championship berth. The New York Giants, meanwhile, added highly rated Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter in the draft and enter the season with two veteran quarterbacks, Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, as well as rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart. Jones, who recently revealed his own successful battle against stage 4 melanoma, is known to let contract disputes fester through training camp. In 2020, quarterback Dak Prescott played on the franchise tag after failing to reach an agreement on a new deal. Last season, Prescott finally got the contract he was looking for just hours before the Week 1 opener, becoming the highest-paid player in NFL history at an average of $60 million a season. Similarly, receiver CeeDee Lamb held out last season until getting a four-year, $136 million in training camp, and a year prior, it was All-Pro guard Zack Martin who held out of camp before getting a new deal. Most famously, at the height of the Cowboys' success in 1993, future Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith missed the first two weeks of the season due to a contract dispute before eventually agreeing to a $13.6 million deal. The team would go on to win the Super Bowl. The valuation comes four decades after President Donald Trump - then a real estate tycoon - nearly bought the club for just $50 million. The future Commander in Chief told The New York Times in 1984 that he instead bought the fledgling USFL's New Jersey Generals for $10 million, thinking it was a better value. 'I could have bought an NFL team,' Trump told Ira Berkow. 'There were three or four available - that still are available, including, of course, the Dallas Cowboys. 'I could have bought an NFL club for $40 million or $50 million, but it's established and you would just see it move laterally,' he added. 'Not enough to create there.' At the time, Trump expressed his condolences for the unfortunate investor who would ultimately wind up with the Cowboys. 'I feel sorry for the poor guy who is going to buy the Dallas Cowboys,' he said. 'It's a no-win situation for him, because if he wins, well, so what, they've won through the year, and if he loses, which seems likely because they're having troubles, he'll be known to the world as a loser.' The original USFL folded in 1986 following the disastrous move from spring to fall football, at Trump's urging. The rival league ultimately failed to compete with the NFL. Jones, meanwhile, purchased the hapless Cowboys in 1989 for a mere $140 million dollars and immediately began the process of returning the franchise to its glory years of the 1970s. The team won three Super Bowls in the 1990s. The Cowboys were the first team to reach a $10 billion valuation last season. Now, according to Sportico, Dallas is joined by the Los Angeles Rams ($10.4 billion) and the New York Giants ($10.2 billion). The New England Patriots ($8.8b), San Francisco 49ers ($8.6b), Philadelphia Eagles ($8.4b), Miami Dolphins ($8.3b), New York Jets ($8.1b), Las Vegas Raiders ($7.9b) and Washington Commanders ($7.5b) round out the top 10.

Joe Root dismisses David Warner's jibe as ‘all part of the fun'

Joe Root has dismissed David Warner's jibe that he will need to 'take the surfboard off his front leg' if he and England are to triumph in Australia this winter. Warner fired the first shots in the phoney Ashes war by highlighting Root's failure to score a hundred in Australia, suggesting that Test cricket's second-highest run-scorer tends to get out lbw a lot. 'Josh Hazlewood tends to have his number quite a lot. He will have to take the surfboard off his front leg,' said Warner, who retired from international cricket last year but is in England with London Spirit in The Hundred and set to play against Root's Trent Rockets at Lord's on Thursday. Asked on a media call if he had laughed off the jibe, Root said: 'Just that. I can't have any control on how people see the game or talk in interview. 'Nothing new, is it? You know there are going to be storylines and people wanting to hype up a big series. Doesn't really change anything. 'It's sort of irrelevant to me. What can I do about it? Just make sure it's not a talking point in six months or 100 days time. 'When you get out there you've got to try and impact the game and help your team get off to a good start. Business as usual as far as I'm concerned. 'I guess it's all part of the fun. We'll see what happens out there (with Warner at Lord's). It's not really in my nature to get too verbal.' Root's insatiable appetite for scoring runs shows no sign of slowing down with 22 hundreds in his last 61 Tests. Only India's Sachin Tendulkar has now scored more Test runs than Root, who now has 13,543 to his name and is 2,378 from top spot. Addressing his poor record in Australia remains a priority for Root, who will be playing in his fourth Ashes series Down Under this winter. 'The thing that stands out for me is I wanted it way too much the last couple of times,' said Root. 'It took me away from what was important. 'Clearly the last few tours there have been loads of other things to contend with… a lot of distractions. 'This time I just want to go and enjoy the tour for what it is. It's a beautiful country, great place to go and play cricket. It's going to be hostile, everything you'd expect and want from an away Ashes series. 'That's something you've got to relish. Going there with 150-odd Test matches under my belt, I feel couldn't be more ready for it.' Root has thrown himself into The Hundred, in which the Rockets have picked up two opening wins, despite the exhausting demands of the recent five-Test series against India, which was drawn 2-2. The 34-year-old expects to feature in September's white-ball home Test against South Africa, although he says no conversation has been held about his participation in another three-match pre-Ashes one-day international series in New Zealand. 'It was physically quite tiring, we fielded a lot,' Root reflected on the India series. 'It was mentally tiring as all the games went pretty much down to the wire. 'But when you flick into a new format, and a new dressing room, it can energise you in a different way. 'It's nice we've started so well. We've got a good group, and we'll try and roll that momentum forward.' ::KP Snacks, the Official Team Partner of The Hundred, are celebrating the installation of 100 new community cricket pitches across England and Wales.
