Nicolas Prodhomme solos clear for stage win as Isaac Del Toro tightens grip on pink jersey
Frenchman Prodhomme (Decathlon AG2R Mondiale) powered to his first Grand Tour victory after breaking away from a group at the front to go on his own with just under 30 of the 166 kilometres from Biella to Champoluc to go.
Around a minute behind him in second was Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates), with general classification rival Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) closely following in third.
Tyrone's Darren Rafferty (EF Education-Easypost) crossed the line over 32 minutes after Prodhomme, nine minutes ahead of compatriot Sam Bennett who finished with the final group of riders.
Rafferty is 84th in the general classification, while Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team's Bennett is 146th overall.
Carapaz attacked late on but Del Toro went with him and managed to outsprint him at the end.
It gave the Mexican another two seconds over second-placed Carapaz in the GC, with Del Toro's advantage standing at 43 seconds heading into Saturday's penultimate 205km stage from Verres to Sestriere.
The gap to Great Britain's Simon Yates (Team Visma) in third has grown from 51 seconds to a minute and 21 seconds after he was among the group that finished behind Del Toro and Carapaz in Friday's race.
Prodhomme said: "I've waited a long time for a win but I won my first race three weeks ago (a stage at the Tour of the Alps) and now to win here, the WorldTour at the Giro d'Italia, I am very, very happy.
"When I followed the first attack, my feeling was not very good. My legs were very bad for the first climb, it is very steep and hard.
"Kilometre after kilometre my legs were better and on the last, I saw the gap was not very big and I needed to take a risk.
"Before today, I'd had two top fives because I didn't take a lot of risks. Today, I wanted to play for the win and it's very nice for me."

Boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. has been deported to Mexico, where he's wanted for alleged cartel ties, following his arrest in the U.S. for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application. Chávez was handed over by authorities and admitted to a prison outside of the city of Hermosillo, in the northern state of Sonora, an official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the news at her daily press conference. 'I understand he was deported. I don't know if it was yesterday or this morning, but we were informed that he was arriving in Mexico,' Sheinbaum said. Chávez, 39, had a warrant for his arrest in Mexico for alleged arms and drug trafficking and ties to the Sinaloa Cartel. Alejandro Gertz Manero, Mexico's attorney general, said the investigation into Chávez started in 2019. The boxer, who is the son of legendary Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez, was arrested July 3 days after his high-profile fight with Jake Paul in California. Sheinbaum said after the arrest she hoped the boxer would be deported to face his charges. Chávez's father was a massive celebrity in the 1980s and '90s who mixed social circles with drug dealers and claimed to have been friends with drug lord Amado Carrillo Fuentes. The iconic fighter defended his son following his arrest, but has not spoken since the deportation. The younger Chávez has battled drug addiction for much of his boxing career, failing drug tests, serving suspensions and egregiously missing weight while being widely criticized for his intermittent dedication to the sport. Chavez won the WBC middleweight title in 2011 and defended it three times. He shared the ring with generational greats Canelo Álvarez and Sergio Martinez, losing to both. In 2012, he was convicted of drink driving in Los Angeles and sentenced to 13 days in jail. In January 2024, he was arrested on gun charges. Police said he possessed two AR-style ghost rifles. He was later freed on a $50,000 bond and on condition he went to a residential drug treatment facility. The case is still pending, with Chávez reporting his progress regularly. AP

Nkunku's Bayern transfer stalls delaying Simons and Garnacho moves to Chelsea
Bayern Munich's move for Christopher Nkunku has stalled, delaying Chelsea's attempts to sign RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons and Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho. Chelsea hope to off-load Nkunku, who is not in the club's plans for the season, and want the forward to leave on a permanent basis. Bayern had a loan offer with an option to buy rejected at the weekend and it remains to be seen if they are prepared to pay enough to sign the Frenchman. Internazionale are also interested in Nkunku, who has struggled for form and fitness since leaving Leipzig for £52m (€60.1m) two years ago. Coming to an agreement with Bayern over the 27-year-old would allow Chelsea to accelerate moves for Simons and Garnacho. Chelsea are not willing to meet United's asking price of £50m (€57.8m) for Garnacho, who has reportedly turned down a switch to Bayern, and they have been waiting to sell fringe players before making an official bid for Simons, who wants to move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are also open to offers for Nicolas Jackson, who is emerging as a target for Aston Villa. However, Jackson's asking price of £80m is putting off potential suitors. Other players expected to leave are Tyrique George, Axel Disasi, Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka and Renato Veiga, the latter of whom is a target for Villarreal. Fulham are interested in Raheem Sterling. Wolves have signed the Cameroon defender Jackson Tchatchoua from Hellas Verona in a deal worth about £10m (€11.5m). The Belgium-born right wing‑back has spent the past two seasons in Serie A after starting his career at Charleroi. Tchatchoua is in effect a replacement for the former club captain Nélson Semedo, who rejected a new contract at Wolves in favour of a move to Fenerbahce. Tchatchoua, who produced the top speed in the Italian top flight last season at 36.3km/h, has signed a five-year deal. Vítor Pereira, the Wolves manager, is hopeful of making at least two more signings this window, with a forward and a midfielder high on the list of priorities. '[I am] waiting for the help of the club to sign new players,' Pereira said after the home defeat against Manchester City on Saturday. Wolves are wary of Jørgen Strand Larsen being high on Newcastle's shortlist but consider the striker not for sale. The Norway forward is among Newcastle's targets amid the protracted Alexander Isak saga after moves for Benjamin Sesko, among others, failed to materialise. Strand Larsen joined Wolves on a permanent basis in July, after the club triggered a £23m (€26.6m) deal to buy a player who scored 14 league goals last season while on loan from La Liga side Celta Vigo. Newcastle have so far failed in their attempts to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford, with the London club holding out for what they deem a fair price for the forward, while Eddie Howe's side have been linked with a move for the out-of-favour Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson. It is thought that only a bid significantly above market value would give Wolves a decision to make on Strand Larsen, who is under contract until 2029. Wolves are open to offloading Hwang Hee-chan this summer, with Crystal Palace pursuing a loan deal for the South Korea forward. Matt Hobbs, the former Wolves sporting director who was influential in bringing Hwang to Molineux from RB Leipzig in 2022, is thought to be close to filling a similar role at Palace, after Dougie Freedman departed for the Saudi side Al-Diriyah. Hwang, who scored only two league goals last season, has dropped down the pecking order under Pereira and was the subject of an inquiry from Birmingham earlier in this window. Fenerbahce are pushing to complete a deal to sign West Ham's Edson Álvarez on loan with an option to buy. The midfielder is surplus to requirements at the London Stadium and freeing up his wages, which are understood to be around £115,000 (€133,120) a week, will increase Graham Potter's budget for new signings. West Ham value Álvarez at £20m (€23.1m) but the finances of the deal have made it hard to find clubs willing to buy the Mexico international. Fenerbahce have emerged as a temporary solution and talks with the Turkish club are progressing. Álvarez has not made a decision on his future, however, and also has loan interest from Porto and Borussia Dortmund. Álvarez has fallen from favour under Potter, who is desperate for additions in midfield after seeing his side crash to a 3-0 defeat at Sunderland in their opening game. West Ham had a £30m (€34.7m) bid rejected for Southampton's Mateus Fernandes last week and were beaten by Newcastle to the signing of Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa. Other options are being explored but the chances of anyone joining before Potter's side host Chelsea on Friday are receding. Álvarez or Guido Rodríguez need to leave before West Ham move for certain targets, but West Ham are desperately short of energy and creativity in midfield. One of the midfielders signed to fill the void left by Declan Rice's £105m sale to Arsenal two years ago, Álvarez has flattered to deceive since joining from Ajax for £35m (€40.5m). His lack of pace has been exposed at times and he was sent off twice last season. He was on the bench against Sunderland, with Potter preferring James Ward-Prowse and Rodríguez in midfield. Rodríguez, who joined on a free transfer from Real Betis last summer, is also available. The Argentinian has interest from Spain and Turkey but his high wages have put off prospective buyers. Andy Irving, the 25-year-old Scottish midfielder, is also up for sale. Potter and West Ham's recruitment chief, Kyle Macaulay, are not working with a big budget this summer. They have signed four players since selling Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham for £54.5m (€63m).
