Egypt, Spain explore enhanced agricultural cooperation
The discussions took place on the sidelines of the 6th Conference of African and European Union Ministers of Agriculture and Food Security, held at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations headquarters in Rome.
The ministers focused on key issues essential for bolstering food security and promoting sustainable agricultural development. Central to the talks were water management strategies, particularly efficient usage practices, and the implementation of advanced field irrigation systems.
Farouk underscored the importance of partnering with Spain to introduce cutting-edge technologies in smart agriculture and modern irrigation methods. He also highlighted opportunities for knowledge exchange across agricultural value chains and encouraged increased Spanish investment in Egypt's agri-business sector.
Planas, in turn, commended the exceptional quality of Egyptian agricultural products and their rising profile in international markets. He expressed keen interest in enhancing trade in agricultural and food commodities between the two countries and extended a formal invitation to Farouk to visit Spain later this year, notably to attend a major agricultural exhibition set to take place in Madrid.
Also present at the meeting were Saad Moussa, Head of External Agricultural Relations, and Mina Rizk, Egypt's Deputy Representative to UN Agencies in Rome.

SCO partnership supports Egypt's modernization, regional stability: Chinese ambassador
The Chinese Embassy in Cairo hosted a seminar on Sunday under the theme 'Development and Impact of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO): Upholding the Spirit of Shanghai Cooperation and Advancing China-Egypt Relations with Steady Steps.' Chinese Ambassador to Cairo Liao Liqiang spoke about the SCO's evolution and its growing relevance for Egypt, emphasising China's commitment to strengthening cooperation between the organization and the Egyptian government. Founded in 2001 in Shanghai by China, Russia, Uzbekistan and other countries, the SCO has expanded from six founding members to ten, alongside observer states and partner countries. Liao highlighted that the organization is now the world's largest comprehensive regional body in terms of member states' population, land area and geographic reach—spanning Asia, Europe and Africa. The ambassador noted that Egypt became a dialogue partner of the SCO in 2022, enabling it to participate in all related dialogues and initiatives. 'The organization strives for justice and fairness—principles clearly reflected in its charter, which emphasises respect for different civilizations, shared development, dialogue, sovereignty, and resolving disputes through consultation,' he said. He added that the SCO promotes mutual benefit and regional security through confidence-building measures among member states, covering areas such as security, defence, border protection, intelligence cooperation, and countering terrorism, separatism and extremism. 'We want to strengthen cooperation with Egypt in combating terrorism,' Liao stated, underlining that the organization also supports economic growth both for its members and globally. Such cooperation, he noted, contributes to Egypt's modernization process, creates economic opportunities, and fosters dialogue between Egypt and other countries, aligning with the aspirations of the Egyptian people. This year, the SCO has prioritised sustainable development, and will hold a major summit from late August to early September expected to attract a wide range of global participants. The summit aims to enhance mutual political trust, increase trade exchanges, and boost the efficiency of cooperation mechanisms. Egypt's accession as a dialogue partner also reflects the organization's expansion into Africa and its commitment to deeper cooperation with the continent. Highlighting recent diplomatic milestones, Liao described the visit of Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Egypt as 'historic and highly significant.' It was the first visit by a Chinese premier to Egypt in 16 years and Premier Li's first stop on his inaugural trip to Africa. The ambassador said the visit demonstrates the keen interest of Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government in strengthening ties with Egypt. OQAE, Naqaa to develop wind power projects in Oman
OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) has signed an agreement with Naqaa Sustainable Energy to jointly develop a series of wind power projects across the Wilayats of Duqm, Mahout, and Sadah, located in the Dhofar and Al Wusta governorates of Oman, with a total capacity of 1,100MW. The projects will utilise locally manufactured wind turbines from Mawarid Turbine, which is expected to be established in Duqm following a memorandum of cooperation previously signed between OQ and Mawarid Turbine, reported ONA. This partnership aligns with OQ Group's broader efforts to create a fully integrated renewable energy value chain, support local industries by localising know-how, and foster innovation by empowering Omani startups in the green energy space, while maximising in-country value. The signing ceremony took place under the patronage of Salim Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals. The agreement was signed by Said Al Masoudi, Chairman of OQ Alternative Energy, and Mustafa Al Hinai, CEO of Naqaa Sustainable Energy. Al Masoudi commented: 'This agreement is a tangible expression of the government's vision to expand renewable energy sources and drive sustainable development across Oman. It reinforces the vital role of OQ as a national investment platform for clean energy solutions, strengthening the electricity grid and addressing the needs of the future through its subsidiary OQ Alternative Energy.' Al Hinai added: 'We're excited about this partnership with OQAE to develop wind power projects, tapping into Oman's vast wind potential and advancing homegrown innovation.
