Afghan police seize weapons, ammunition in two provinces
The contraband included 16 pieces of heavy and light arms, such as PK machine guns, M16 rifles, Kalashnikovs, assault rifles, and rocket launchers, discovered in Tirin Kot city, the capital of Uruzgan, and Jaghouri and Qara Bagh districts of Ghazni, the ministry said, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Additionally, authorities confiscated a substantial amount of ammunition and military equipment, including communication devices, explosives, and a large quantity of cartridges and bullets during the operations, it added.
The operations are part of the Afghan interim government's ongoing efforts to stabilise security across the war-torn country, having recovered thousands of arms and vast quantities of ammunition over the past four years.
Earlier on August 10, the Ministry of Interior Affairs said that Afghan security forces discovered a large amount of weapons and military equipment in the eastern Paktia province. The items were seized during a series of operations on the outskirts of Samkani and Ahmad Khil districts, the ministry said.
Earlier on August 4, Afghanistan police authorities discovered arms and ammunition, including a Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG), in western Afghanistan's Farah province, the provincial police office said in a news release.
The weaponry, including an AK-47, an RPG, four hand grenades, projectiles and other military equipment, was found in a house in Khak-e-Safid district, the news release added.
In a similar incident on July 27, the Afghan security forces discovered a mass weapon and ammunition cache in southern Afghanistan's Uruzgan province, seizing various types of arms along with a large quantity of ammunition.
Acting on a tip-off, the security personnel launched an operation based on intelligence reports in Tirin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province, and discovered weapons, including six AK-47 rifles, a heavy machine gun, PK machine guns, rocket launchers, and hundreds of hand grenades.
Additionally, a substantial amount of ammunition and military equipment has been seized during the operations.
Two individuals were arrested in connection with the case.

MUMBAI: A most-wanted criminal from Bihar, Bootan Janeshwar Chaudhary alias Harendra Chaudhary, was arrested on Monday from the Tungareshwar forest in Vasai in an operation jointly carried out by the Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar Crime branch and Bihar's Special Task Force. He has been on the run for several years, after committing over 20 serious crimes of murder, extortion and robbery, and he is also suspected to have carried out terrorist activities in Bihar, said a police officer. The police said that his ordeals date back to as early as 2016, when AK-47 rifles and hand grenades were recovered from his house in Bihar and he was suspected to have carried out terrorist activities. He had committed several crimes after that, and in 2022, when the STF had launched a search operation for him and had announced a reward of ₹2 lakh for anyone who could give them any tip-off, helping to find him, he had fled the state, the officer said.

From Bhojpur to Mumbai, Bihar most-wanted's run ends in arrest
The Bihar Police have arrested one of the state's 'most-wanted' gangsters with several criminal charges and a bounty of Rs 2 lakh from Maharashtra's Palghar district. Harendra 'Butan' Chowdhury alias Buttan was tracked down by the Bihar Special Task Force (STF) and arrested on August 18 in a joint operation with Maharashtra Police, police said. Buttan faces 14 criminal cases that include charges of murder, robbery, dacoity, extortion and violations under the Arms Act across Bhojpur, Patna and Vaishali districts, Bihar Additional Director General of Police (STF) Kundan Krishnan said. 'He was brought back to Bihar on transit remand and presented before Ara Court Wednesday.' A native of Belaur village under Udwant Nagar Police Station in Bhojpur district, Police said Buttan is suspected to be the key conspirator in the April 2023 killing of Deepak Sao, a former Block Development Committee member and sweet shop owner. The murder was allegedly linked to local elections. 'On April 7, Bihar STF and Bhojpur Police recovered an AK-47, four magazines, 43 cartridges and two hand grenades from Buttan's residence in a coordinated raid. While he fled, his brother, Upendra Chowdhury, was arrested in the case,' ADG Krishnan said. In 2016, Buttan and his five associates were arrested for the possession of an AK-47 and other illegal firearms. Multiple warrants had been issued against him for arms smuggling, extortion and organised violence. According to the police, Buttan was hiding in Mumbai's suburbs after fleeing from Bihar. Following his arrest on August 19, Bihar STF and Bhojpur Police raided Belaur yet again and arrested his close aide Suresh Singh alias Suresh Rai, and another accomplice Sumit Chowdhury. 'A country-made pistol was recovered from Singh,' one officer said.

76 killed in major highway crash in Afghanistan, 17 children among victims
Herat [Afghanistan], August 21 (ANI): At least 76 people, including 17 children, lost their lives in a devastating traffic accident in Herat province, making it one of the deadliest road tragedies in Afghanistan in recent years, Khaama Press reported. The incident took place on the Herat ring road in Guzara district when a passenger vehicle carrying Afghan migrants returning from Iran collided with a cargo truck and a motorcycle, officials confirmed. The crash triggered a massive fire that quickly engulfed the passenger Press, citing Taliban-controlled Radio Television Afghanistan, reported that three people were injured in the accident. Local authorities stated that seventeen children were among those who perished in the flames.
