Jannik Sinner overcomes late wobble to win Paris opener

Paris, May 27 (UNI) World number one Jannik Sinner defied a late wobble to begin his French Open campaign with a straight-set victory over Arthur Rinderknech.
Playing his first Grand Slam match since serving a three-month doping ban, Italian Sinner beat his French opponent 6-4 6-3 7-5 on Court Philippe Chatrier on Monday.
It was not as comfortable as the scoreline suggests, however, with the 23-year-old forced to fight back from a double break down in the third set against a resurgent Rinderknech.
It marked a return to winning ways for Sinner after Carlos Alcaraz ended his run of 26 successive match victories in the Italian Open final earlier this month, the BBC reported.
"First-round matches are never easy," he said. "I'm very happy with how I handled the situation, especially in the third set.
"He made a couple of mistakes when he was serving for the set so that gave me some help. But
I just tried to have the right mindset and attitude."
Earlier on Monday, world number four Taylor Fritz became the highest-ranked player to exit this year's tournament at Roland Garros as he was beaten by Daniel Altmaier in the first round.
Having saved three early break points in a cagey opener, Sinner was gifted the first set in an error-strewn service game from 75th-ranked Rinderknech, a backhand planted into the net on Sinner's first set point sending the Italian on his way.
He broke at the second time of asking in the fourth game of the second set and eased through its remainder, dropping just a solitary point on serve.
But his game temporarily crumbled in the third set as Rinderknech, buoyed by a partisan crowd in his home capital, won the opening four games to take a commanding lead.
Normality soon resumed however as Sinner fought back to cancel out Rinderknech's break points, puncturing the atmosphere on the showcase court.
From there he barely gave his opponent another sniff of a chance. Piling the pressure on the Frenchman's racquet, Sinner went a break up and sealed the match with a fierce serve
Rinderknech, 29, could do little to match.
Sinner will play French veteran Richard Gasquet in the second round.
Former top 10 player Gasquet, 38, is playing the final tournament of his career at Roland Garros and beat compatriot and fellow wildcard Terence Atmane in his opening match.
Sinner won his third major title at the Australian Open in January but has yet to reach the final at Roland Garros, exiting in the semi-finals 12 months ago at the hands of eventual champion Alcaraz.
In February he accepted an immediate three-month ban after reaching a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) over his two positive drugs tests last year.
That suspension ended earlier in May, meaning he was able to compete at his home tournament in Rome - where he dropped just one set en-route to the final against Alcaraz - before travelling to Paris for the second major of the year.

Inter set to appoint former player Chivu as manager to replace Inzaghi

Inter Milan will appoint its former player and youth coach Cristian Chivu as manager to replace the recently departed Simone Inzaghi once details are worked out with his current club Parma, Inter president Giuseppe Marotta said on Friday. Inzaghi left Inter on Tuesday, four years to the day since his appointment and three days after his side suffered a 5-0 defeat to Paris St Germain in the Champions League final to end the season trophyless, and was named coach of Al-Hilal a day later. Italian media reports had already named Chivu as the new manager with the 44-year-old Romanian set to sign a two-year contract, and Marotta, speaking at the Serie A Festival, all but confirmed the news. ALSO READ: Tottenham sacks Postecoglou days after Europa League title win 'To win, money alone is not enough, expertise, planning, experience, and many other qualities are needed,' Marotta said. 'All these qualities are what we believe to have, for example, in the case of Chivu. I'm saying this because I cannot give official confirmation as there is a bureaucratic aspect we need to overcome with Parma.' While Inzaghi arrived at Inter after being in charge of Lazio for five full seasons, winning a Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups with the Rome-based team, the club are now putting their faith in a coach with very little coaching experience at this level. Chivu spent seven seasons as a defender at Inter, ending his playing career at the club in 2014 and was part of Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side of 2010. He returned to Inter in 2018, taking charge of underage teams and moving up through the ranks to manage the youth team, where he won the league title in his first season in charge in 2022. Chivu left Inter at the end of the 2023-24 season, and in February this year, he took on his first senior managerial role when he was named Parma manager to replace Fabio Pecchia with the club in the Serie A relegation zone. Parma had lost five of its last six games under Pecchia, while Chivu suffered just three defeats in his 13 matches in charge, securing the club's survival with a win at Atalanta on the final day of the season. Chivu has little time to settle in with the Club World Cup fast approaching where Inter begins the tournament on June 17 when it takes on Mexicos' Monterrey in Los Angeles followed by two games in Seattle against Urawa Red Diamonds and River Plate. Roma signs Gasperini as new coach

Gian Piero Gasperini was unveiled as new coach of Italian side Roma on Friday after nine hugely successful years at the helm of Atalanta. Gasperini, 67, joins Roma on a three-year-deal after turning Atalanta into one of Italy's best teams, winning the Europa League last year. Departing coach Claudio Ranieri stepped down after Roma finished fifth in Serie A, but was on hand to welcome Gasperini, and stood beside the new man as Roma presented him. 'Gasperini's career is defined by its creative tactics, dedication to hard work, and exceptional player development,' Roma said on their website. 'Both ownership and Claudio Ranieri believe Gasperini is the right man for the mission.' Gasperini is a spiky character prone to angry outbursts at journalists and he will have to deal with both an expectant, highly-strung fanbase and an intense media environment in the Italian capital. Roma last qualified for the Champions League in 2017. It narrowly missed out on a spot in Europe's top club competition after a surge up the table under local hero Ranieri fell just short. Ivan Juric has been appointed Atalanta manager to replace Gasperini, with the Croatian signing a two-year deal just two months after he left Southampton following their Premier League relegation.
