Everyone used to love Raymond, now everyone feeds Phil Rosenthal
Romano, the sitcom's star, showed up at the Paramount concert hall on Long Island, New York, expecting to stir up excitement among fans and help out during the Q&A. No one had a question for him, he said; they just wanted to tell Rosenthal about their favourite places to eat in Lisbon, Portugal, or Nashville, Tennessee.
'How did this happen?' the actor asked me over the phone last week. 'I've been doing stand-up for 30 years. He goes to Poland and eats meatloaf and sells out theatres around the world?'

There is no shortage of armchair-travel television. But somehow, Rosenthal has broken through and become a global star.
Season eight of his show, which features Sydney and Adelaide, dropped in June, making it one of the longest-running unscripted shows on Netflix. In August, he'll start a North American tour, and a second cookbook, Phil's Favourites – the first was a New York Times bestseller – will come out in November.
The live shows Rosenthal did last year sold out not only in New York City and Los Angeles, but also in Melbourne, Glasgow, Brussels and Dublin. There's no cooking demo, no tight five minutes of stand-up. Just him.
What's the appeal? 'I know it's not my looks,' he said at a sneak preview of the show's new season in Manhattan.
Tall and skinny, quick and twinkly, he comes across like everyone's favourite uncle – the silly one, who makes quarters disappear up his nose. Or great-uncle, considering he's 65.
Rosenthal is a sunny counterpart to his most famous predecessor, Anthony Bourdain, who carried a whiff of darkness on all his adventures. Bourdain explored Vietnam's colonial legacy and travelled down the Congo River, but you never saw him doing a happy dance after biting into a herring or an arepa.

In 2014, four years before Bourdain died, Rosenthal was lucky (and canny) enough to hire his production company, Zero Point Zero. That explains the high-quality visuals and research that go into Somebody Feed Phil. Like Bourdain's shows, it's respectful of culture and food and the people who produce it – but silly about almost everything else.
Rosenthal makes fun of his brother, Richard, the showrunner; banters with the prime minister of Finland; and is always game to put on a Cirque du Soleil costume or chase a chicken. At the end of each episode, he invites every cook, cheesemaker, fisherman and whoever else worked on the show to dinner, usually followed by chocolate egg creams – one of very few things he knows how to make. (The recipes in his cookbooks are contributed by chefs.)
As Rosenthal tells it, his love of food was born not at home, but in diners.
For Everybody Loves Raymond, he transferred many details of his Jewish-American background to the Italian-American character Ray Barone – including his mother's terrible cooking, which was played for laughs.

But the background is more complicated than that. His parents spent their childhoods in Nazi Germany. Max's family fled to the United States in 1938, immediately after Kristallnacht; Helen's stayed, until she and her mother were sent to Gurs, a concentration camp in south-western France. As refugees, they were en route to the US in 1941 when their ship was diverted to Cuba, where they waited two years before being allowed into the country.
That was enough adventure for one lifetime, it seemed: When Rosenthal was growing up in New City, a middle-class suburb north of New York City, he said, his parents weren't worried about expanding their horizons or their palates.
He recalls the food his mother cooked was so bland that he first tasted garlic as an undergraduate at university. His father cared about only one dish: scrambled eggs. (True story: 'Are my eggs fluffy?' is carved on his tombstone.) But treats such as cheeseburgers and egg creams, Rosenthal said, made him curious about what other delights might be out there in the world.
As an aspiring actor in New York City in the 1980s, he scrimped for months to pay for dinners at fancy restaurants. Later, he moved to Los Angeles, then offstage and into writing, and eventually into the kind of success that allowed him to eat anywhere in the world.

After Raymond ended in 2005, Rosenthal tried for a decade to get another sitcom off the ground, but to his surprise, 'nobody wanted it', he said. So he began travelling more and spending time with food experts such as Silverton, chef Thomas Keller and Los Angeles Times restaurant critic Jonathan Gold, who died in 2018.
Rosenthal said Gold, whose groundbreaking work celebrated taco trucks and noodle joints as fiercely as white-tablecloth restaurants, gave him the words that still illuminate the greater purpose of a show like Somebody Feed Phil.
By showing the world what other people eat, Rosenthal explained, Gold 'said he was trying to make all of us a little less afraid of our neighbours'.

'Just waiting for the credits to roll': Meghan and Harry's $100 million Netflix partnership 'dead' amid 'dismal' ratings and lifestyle brand flop
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's future with Netflix appears to be in jeopardy, with a company insider claiming their $100 million content deal is effectively "dead" following a series of underwhelming releases. New figures released by Netlfix's latest 'What We Watched' semi-annual report found that Meghan's cooking show, 'With Love Meghan' failed to break into it's top 300 programmes. In fact, it was closer to its 400th program, coming in at the 383rd most-watched show. It was even outranked by reruns of Suits, the legal drama that launched Meghan's acting career, and Gossip Girl Season One, which first aired in 2007. On Tuesday, an insider at Netflix told The Mail the Duchess of Sussex had "everything going for her," but the viewing figures for With Love, Meghan were "dismal". "This deal is dead," they said. The insider said that Netflix are "just waiting for the credits to roll." "They're letting it expire without drama," they said. Another source reportedly added of the interest drop-off that the couple "went from buzzy to background noise." The Sussexes first signed their five-year agreement with the streaming platform back in 2020, shortly after stepping back from their royal duties and relocating to Montecito, California. To date, all of the Sussexes' Netflix projects have been documentaries, including the high-profile Harry & Meghan series, Heart of Invictus about Harry's sporting initiative for veterans, and Live to Lead, which spotlighted inspirational global figures. Their most recent venture, With Love, Meghan, aimed to showcase the Duchess' love of "cooking, gardening, entertaining and friendship". Despite filming both seasons back-to-back, the show's poor performance has now cast a shadow over future plans. Deadline's co-editor-in-chief for TV, Nellie Andreeva, didn't mince words, describing the viewership numbers as "very low for a Netflix original- and pretty unprecedented for a show that has been renewed." Originally due to premiere on 15 January this year, the first season of With Love, Meghan was pushed back to 4 March due to wildfires in Southern California. "I'm thankful to my partners at Netflix for supporting me in delaying the launch, as we focus on the needs of those impacted by the wildfires in my home state of California," Meghan said at the time. The show's release was timed to coincide with the relaunch of her lifestyle brand, formerly known as American Riviera Orchard, now rebranded as As Ever. In a February Instagram clip, Meghan told fans: "Cat's out of the bag. I'm shocked we've been able to keep this a secret for so long." Explaining the rebrand, she said the original name had felt too restrictive. "Last year I thought American Riviera Orchard is a great name (but) it limited me to products manufactured and grown in this area." The As Ever brand, which draws inspiration from Meghan's pre-royal lifestyle blog The Tig, now encompasses a small line of jams, conserves, and wines sold online. But the venture, also funded by Netflix, has come under heavy criticism from marketing experts, with Camille Moore and Phillip Millar describing it as one of the weakest brand launches they've seen. Speaking on The Art of the Brand podcast, Ms Moore said: "I feel like she's doing such a brutal or good job, depending on how you're looking at it, of getting this like free PR and then absolutely s****** the bed." Mr Millar was equally scathing, saying: "They're just milking that for everything they can," and suggesting the brand was simply 'maximising the value from her fame that came from Suits and being a part of the Royal Family". Despite mounting rumours about the future of their Netflix contract, the company's Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria struck a more optimistic tone in February, telling that Netflix was still "excited" about future projects with the Duke and Duchess. Trump boasts about $25m Paramount payday
US President Donald Trump says CBS parent company Paramount has paid him $US16 million ($A25 million) as part of a lawsuit settlement. This month, Paramount agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by Trump claiming that the CBS news program 60 Minutes deceptively edited an interview with former vice president Kamala Harris that the network broadcast in October. Paramount needs approval from the Federal Communications Commission for its $US8.4 billion ($A12.9 billion) merger with Skydance Media. The FCC did not make a decision by the 180-day informal deadline in mid-May and FCC Chair Brendan Carr has denied Trump's lawsuit was a factor. Paramount declined comment. Trump and CBS formally agreed on Tuesday to the dismissal of his lawsuit, according to a court filing. "We have just achieved a BIG AND IMPORTANT WIN in our Historic Lawsuit against 60 Minutes, CBS, and Paramount... Paramount/CBS/60 Minutes have today paid $16 Million Dollars in settlement, and we also anticipate receiving $20 Million Dollars more from the new Owners," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. Skydance declined to comment on Trump's social media post. Skydance and its investors plan to acquire National Amusements, which holds the family's controlling stake in Paramount. Skydance will subsequently be merged into Paramount, with its CEO, David Ellison, becoming Paramount's next chief executive. The payment comes after CBS faced a barrage of criticism over its controversial decision to axe Stephen Colbert's Late Night talk show after he labelled Paramount's decision to pay the settlement to Trump a "big fat bribe". The New York Post previously reported Ellison, son of billionaire Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, agreed to run up to $US20 million ($A31 million) in public service announcements to promote causes supported by the president. Following publication, Paramount issued a statement that its settlement with Trump "does not include PSAs or anything related to PSAs". Paramount also said it had no knowledge of any promises or commitments made to Trump other than those put forth by the mediator.
