Religious leader hits out at Speaker for remarks on changing school timings
Kozhikode (Kerala), Aug 20 (PTI) Prominent Sunni leader Nasar Faizy Koodathai on Wednesday slammed Kerala Assembly Speaker A N Shamseer for his remarks, urging religious leaders to reconsider their stand on changing school timings.
Speaking at a programme in Kannur on Tuesday, Shamseer had underscored the need to adapt to changing times while mentioning school timings and wanted the religious leaders and scholars to reconsider their adamant stand in the matter.
Talking to a TV channel, Koodathai, a prominent leader of the Samastha Kerala Jam'eyyat ul-Ulama, raised suspicion about whether his (Shamseer) statements were deliberate and part of an agenda by the Left government to bring back the issue, which had already died down, to the limelight again.
Samastha Kerala Jam'eyyat ul-Ulama is an influential Muslim body of Sunni scholars which has the largest support base among Kerala Muslims.
Samastha had raised strong objections when the government extended the timing of the state-run schools in the state this academic year by 30 minutes as per a court decision.
Koodathai said they have not abandoned their agitation against the government decision in this regard. They do not want to go on a public stir as the Samastha supreme leadership is the final authority to take a decision.
He alleged that their agitations opposing the school timing change were deliberately given a communal colour and accused the government of having a role in this.
He said the Samastha withdrew from public agitation to avoid any communal division being created in society over this. 'But the Speaker has opened the topic again. It was a move with ulterior motives," Koodathai alleged.
He suspected that the government's agenda was behind the Speaker's remarks.
The leader further said that they are against the stand taken by General Education Minister V Sivankutty in the school time change issue, but they opted not to continue their protest to avoid communal division in society.
Sivankutty reiterated recently that school timings cannot be changed to accommodate a particular community as the government has to consider the interests of lakhs of students.
The minister had also said that the decision to extend school timings by 30 minutes was taken based on the directions of the Kerala High Court, and therefore, anyone aggrieved by the same can seek legal remedies. PTI LGK KH

Dhar admn seals Imambada, hands it over to PWD
Mhow: Dhar district administration sealed an Imambada on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday after getting it vacated and later handed it over to Public Works Department (PWD). A heavy police force was deployed in the town to prevent any untoward incident while the Imambada was being vacated and sealed. The Imambada, operated from a section of PWD building in Hatwara area of the town, had been under the possession of Tajiya committee for decades. Hindu organisations had contested that it was a govt-owned building meant for running cultural activities and should be available for all communities. The Tajiya committee argued that permission was granted for storing Tajiyas (tableaux). The action was taken following a complaint filed at the Dhar SDM court. The SDM court had ordered for the vacation of the premises. Challenging the order, the Tajiya committee had filed an appeal in Commissioner's revenue court, which also maintained the SDM court's order on Tuesday. Dhar SP Manoj Kumar Singh told TOI, "On the orders of the SDM court, the portion was vacated and handed over to PWD. Looking at the issue, additional police force was deployed in the area as well as the whole town to ensure that nothing untoward takes place. As far as the situation in Dhar is concerned, it is peaceful and fully under control, and the force will remain there round the clock." Abdul Samad, Sadar (head) of Muslim community, said that he was unaware of the action but claimed that a petition in this regard was filed in the Supreme Court. Amid Threat of US Tariffs, India Flags Soaring Trade Deficit, Russia Assures Oil Flows

Jaishankar on Wednesday (August 20) pressed Russia to address India's ballooning trade deficit even as Moscow pledged to keep supplying discounted oil despite US tariff threats and said it hoped trilateral talks with India and China would soon resume. Jaishankar, who is in Moscow to co-chair the 26th session of the Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, noted that bilateral trade had risen more than five-fold in four years, from $13 billion in 2021 to $ 68 billion in 2024-25, but that India's trade deficit with Russia had widened nearly nine times to $58.9 billion. 'So we need to address that urgently,' he said in his opening remarks. India's trade with Russia had long remained modest until the Ukraine war, when traditional crude suppliers in West Asia shifted exports toward Europe. India responded by sharply increasing its purchases of discounted Russian oil, driving a surge in overall trade volumes. Outlining the agenda of the inter-governmental commission, Jaishankar listed the need to remove tariff and non-tariff barriers, ease logistics bottlenecks, expand connectivity projects such as the International North-South Transport Corridor and the Chennai-Vladivostok Corridor, and ensure smooth payment mechanisms. He also called for the early conclusion of the India-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement and closer engagement between businesses to help reach the revised target of growing bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030. Russian first deputy prime minister Denis Manturov, who co-chaired the meeting, was quoted by Interfax as saying that shipments of crude, petroleum products and coal to India would continue, while Moscow also saw scope for expanding liquefied natural gas exports. Manturov added that Russia was seeking deeper cooperation with India in nuclear energy. In New Delhi, Russian officials echoed that oil supplies to India would remain steady despite Washington's decision to raise tariffs on Indian exports to 50%, half of which the US has linked to Russian crude imports. Roman Babushkin, the charge d'affaires at the Russian embassy, said Moscow and New Delhi would find ways to overcome the US measures in their 'national interests'. 'I want to highlight that despite the political situation, we can predict … the same level of oil import,' he told reporters. Deputy trade commissioner Evgeny Griva said discounted prices made Russian oil 'very profitable' for India, with supplies averaging 5%-7% cheaper than other sources. He said Moscow had developed a 'special mechanism' to keep flows uninterrupted and had begun accepting rupee payments after resolving issues that had left billions of dollars stuck in Indian banks. Babushkin, the second-seniormost Russian diplomat in India, also hoped that with warming ties between New Delhi and Beijing, there would be potential to revive trilateral cooperation with India and China under what it calls a 'greater Eurasian partnership'. Last month, Indian officials had not been publicly enthusiastic about the push for reviving the Russia-India-China format. Babushkin noted Russian President Vladimir Putin would visit New Delhi by the end of the year for the annual summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trade deficit rising due to oil buy, need to address it: EAM in Russia
Photo/PTI NEW DELHI: On a visit to Moscow, external affairs minister S Jaishankar has suggested measures to further expand the trade relationship and to address the trade deficit of $58.9 billion that has resulted from India's increased oil procurement from Russia. The minister said this trade imbalance needed to be addressed urgently. Ahead of Jaishankar's meeting with his counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Thursday, Russia said in a statement that the main emphasis would be on promoting transportation, logistics, banking and financial chains independent from countries imposing sanctions, as well as expanding the use of national currencies in mutual settlements. Addressing tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, removing bottlenecks in logistics, promoting connectivity, effecting payment mechanisms smoothly and early conclusion of the India-Eurasian Economic Union FTA, whose terms of reference were finalised on Wednesday, were some of the measures he suggested to diversify trade relations and address the imbalance. "They will not only help to address the imbalance and grow our trade, but also hasten the timely achievement of our revised trade target of $100 billion by 2030," said Jaishankar, co-chairing the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) with Russia's first deputy PM Denis Manturov. Lavrov is expected to brief him about the Russia-US summit in Alaska. Ahead of the meeting, the Russian foreign ministry said that the foundation of the Russian-Indian special privileged strategic partnership was mutual trust and respect. "It is planned to touch upon the issues of enhancing cooperation in the transport, energy, agricultural and scientific-technical spheres," said the Russian statement.
