Merrill, Maldonado deliver RBI hits in the 2nd inning as Padres hold on to beat Marlins 2-1
Merrill had an RBI single that scored Xander Bogaerts. Maldonado followed with a double down the left field line off Eury Pérez (3-3) that scored Merrill from first and put San Diego up 2-0.
Miami's Kyle Stowers hit a solo homer off Padres starter Randy Vásquez that made it 2-1 in the fourth. Stowers, who has an MLB-best 12 homers since June 22, connected on a 1-0 changeup and sent it 400 feet to left-center for his 22nd home run of the season.
Vásquez allowed one run on seven hits while issuing one walk and no strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. He left with a runner at first and one out in the fifth before Adrian Morejon (8-4) got the last two outs of the inning. Robert Suarez got the final three outs for his 29th save.
Pérez struck out five and allowed two runs on five hits in five innings.
Xavier Edwards had three of Miami's eight hits, but the Marlins went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position.

The San Diego Padres are turning a position of strength into a position of dominance. Despite already having three All-Star relievers and a bullpen that easily leads MLB with a 2.97 ERA, the Padres swung a blockbuster deal for Athletics closer Mason Miller on Thursday at the MLB trade deadline, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Starter J.P. Sears is also heading to the Padres in the deal. San Diego reportedly paid a steep price to acquire Miller. The Padres reportedly gave up shortstop Leodalis De Vries in the trade, per Passan. De Vries entered the 2025 season as a consensus top-20 prospect in the game. De Vries, 18, is hitting .245/.357/.410 in 368 plate appearances in the minors this season. Miller is under team control through the 2029 season, making this much more than just a rental. Few relievers are as feared as Miller, who throws the hardest of any pitcher in MLB with a fastball averaging 101.1 mph and has topped out at 104.1 mph. Since making his MLB debut in 2023, he has blown hitter after hitter away with that heat and his wipeout slider, against which batters are slugging .111 this season. Miller hasn't been completely dominant, as evidenced by his 3.76 ERA in 2025, but he has stuff you can't teach. And now he's going to a team clearly eager to use him. The Padres bullpen is headlined by closer Robert Suarez and set-up men Jason Adam and Adrián Morejón, all three of whom were named to the 2025 MLB All-Star Game. It was the first time a team had ever sent three relievers to the same All-Star Game, and now they're adding a guy with better raw stuff than any of them. It's unclear what role Miller will fill in San Diego. When it comes to deciding a closer, he is certainly the biggest name of the newly formed quartet for most fans, but incumbency and surface-level numbers are mostly on Suarez's side. Regardless, it's a good problem to have. Trading Miller is a significant sign for the A's given his age and four years of team control left after this season. The team has been navigating a delicate situation all year, trying to stay respectable enough while they play in a minor league ballpark while building with an eye toward a future in Las Vegas, where they are theoretically lined up to debut in 2028 (assuming there are no hiccups with the funding and construction of their new stadium). To trade Miller, the kind of reliever who draws eyes and social media followers every time he takes the mound, is an odd move for a team that really wants to be competitive as it's settling into its new home. The counter-argument is the players it got for Miller can help that effort as well, but it's a big bet. Which is apt, given their destination.

The Miami Dolphins are less than two weeks from opening their preseason slate with a road game against the Chicago Bears. But it wouldn't be a surprise if the team that hits the field doesn't much resemble the regular season starting squad. Last year, starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa appeared in only one preseason game and played a grand total of 11 snaps. This time around, Tagovailoa isn't opposed to getting a little more exhibition work. "I'd definitely love to get some preseason snaps in, no doubt," Tagovailoa told reporters Wednesday. "It's a new season, it's a new year. Got to get things tuned in with the guys again, all of that. I don't think I'm better than anyone on this team or think I'm too cool to get reps on during preseason games. I don't mind that at all, I would love that." While the Dolphins probably like that their quarterback has the humility to be open to preseason snaps, a major priority for the team this season is to keep Tagovailoa healthy. The six games he missed last season are arguably the biggest reason why the Dolphins didn't get back to the playoffs. Tagovailoa will probably see action in at least one preseason game this August, but fans shouldn't expect to see him any more than they did a season ago. The bigger question the Dolphins need to answer in preseason is who their backup quarterback is going to be. While head coach Mike McDaniel said it's Zach Wilson's job to lose, Tagovailoa has been impressed with seventh-round rookie Quinn Ewers. "I think Quinn's been balling. I think he's been buying into what he's been told in the quarterback room and then things that he's taken from the meeting rooms," said Tagovailoa. "With Mike's meetings, (Bobby Slowik's) meetings, and (Darrell Bevell's) meetings. And he's been able to take that out here on the practice field, and he's been doing really well. I think Zach's been doing pretty good as well and they'll continue to work. They'll continue to get me better; I'll continue to get those guys better and continue to help that room grow." BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen says he is staying with the Red Bull team for next year, ending months of speculation over his future. 'For me, it's always been quite clear, and also for next year,' the four-time champion said Thursday ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. 'I'm discussing with the team already the plans — the things that we want to change for next year, so that means that I'm also staying with the team for next year.'
