Giovanni van Bronckhorst set to join Liverpool's backroom staff
Liverpool are close to appointing the former Netherlands international Giovanni van Bronckhorst to their backroom staff.
Van Bronckhorst will replace John Heitinga, who left the Premier League champions to become head coach at Ajax, and take his place in Arne Slot's new-look think tank.
The 50-year-old has had recent spells as a manager at Rangers, guiding them to the Europa League final in 2022 where they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt, and then Besiktas before his dismissal in November.
Van Bronckhorst began his managerial career at Feyenoord, Slot's former club, and won the Eredivisie title in 2017. That was a success Slot emulated in 2023.
He will form part of the backroom team alongside Sipke Hulshoff and Aaron Briggs as Liverpool look to defend their title success next season.
Liverpool's triumph owed much to the detailed level of coaching that Slot and his staff oversaw, eliciting improvement from established stars such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk as well as players such as Ryan Gravenberch.
Heitinga acted as a 'coaching mentor' to Gravenberch, with the player crediting him with helping him take a step forward in his career.
The way Slot works means that Van Bronckhorst will also take on similar responsibilities.
As well as a coaching background, Van Bronckhorst brings with him a wealth of experience from a storied playing career which began at Feyenoord before spells at Barcelona and Arsenal among other clubs.

Van Bronckhorst, a left-back, won the last of his 106 caps for the Netherlands in the World Cup final in 2010, playing alongside Heitinga as the Dutch lost 1-0 to Spain in Johannesburg.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are continuing talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for Florian Wirtz and also Bournemouth for Milos Kerkez.
Heitinga wants to take goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, who made his Liverpool debut against Crystal Palace in a league game last season, to Ajax on loan.

Spurs' Mikey Moore aiming for another European trophy with England Under-19s
Mikey Moore is excited to show new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank what he can do – but the teenager's immediate focus is ending an unforgettable breakthrough campaign with another European trophy. Having made his Spurs debut at the end of the last season, the highly-rated 17-year-old kicked on and showed glimpses of his outstanding potential during a topsy-turvy campaign in north London. Moore made 19 appearances in all competitions for his boyhood club, with five of those coming in a Europa League campaign that ended with Tottenham beating Manchester United to win a first trophy since 2008. The winger was on the bench in Bilbao and three weeks on has more continental glory in his sights as England kick-off their bid for Under-19 European Championship glory against Norway on Saturday. 'It was a top experience – some of the best times of my life on that Wednesday night,' Moore told the PA news agency. 'When I look back on the season, when I go back to (last) pre-season I didn't ever expect to be in the position I was halfway through the season,' Moore said. 'But obviously it wasn't all great, it didn't all go to plan. I think there were certain parts in the season where I've not struggled, but had down moments. 'But when I look back on it it's been a massive learning year for me, and it's obviously come to an end now almost, and we came out successful. It's a season I will always look back on and be proud of.'

Man Utd chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe locked in legal battle with Tottenham over broken multi-million sponsorship deal
SPURS are locked in a legal battle with Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in a row over a broken sponsorship deal. Ratcliffe 's Ineos chemicals giant and its Grenadier car brand agreed a five-year deal as Spurs ' 'official 4x4 vehicle partner' in December 2022. 1 It followed a 2020 contract with Ineos unveiled as the club's 'official hand sanitiser supplier' during the pandemic. Following Ratcliffe's takeover at Prem rivals United last year it was confirmed that the company intended to pull out of the agreement. It was believed that a break deal in the multi-million pound agreement had been reached between the two parties. But now Spurs have instigated a High Court legal action against Ineos. As part of what is listed as a 'general commercial contracts and arrangements', Tottenham have lodged a claim against Ineos Automotive Limited, a subsidiary of Ineos. That suggests negotiations have failed to find an agreement, with the Tottenham claim lodged on June 12. Tottenham declined to comment while Ineos said in a statement: "INEOS Automotive has been a partner of Tottenham Hotspur since 2022, expanding on a partnership agreement that INEOS Group had in place with the club since 2020. "We have a contractual right to terminate our partnership contract and in December 2024 exercised that right." SunSport understands it is hoped a deal can be reached to prevent a full High Court hearing. Spurs appointed Thomas Frank as their new manager on Thursday, six days on from the departure of Ange Postecoglou. The Lilywhites paid Brentford around £10million in compensation for the Dane. Frank's move took time to be completed due to negotiations over backroom staff - specifically highly-rated head of coaching Justin Cochrane. Man Utd considered the Brentford boss as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag last summer. However, the Red Devils instead opted for Ruben Amorim in October.
