New CAFE rules on way, automakers speed up flex fuel vehicle devpt

Kolkata: Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) have all stepped on the flex fuel accelerator following minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari's recent remark that the new Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) rules would balance both electric and flex fuel engines. This means the new CAFE 3 framework, due in April 2027, will give flex fuel vehicles that run on petrol-ethanol blends the same regulatory benefits as EVs. Flex fuel refers to petrol mixed with ethanol anywhere between 20% and 100%, which is derived from the fermentation of sugars and starches found in plants. Gadkari's remarks follow a meeting he held last year with representatives of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) in which he asked automakers to look into ways of making these flex fuel vehicles more acceptable to the public, citing Brazil's successful integration of flex fuels and biofuels in its transportation. While ethanol is less expensive than petrol, there is a downside to the fuel: it delivers less efficiency or mileage by 30% than pure petrol. Toyota plans to overcome this disadvantage by electrifying the flex fuel vehicle using strong hybrid technology. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like See Results for Car Selling Websites Search Now Undo "Strong hybrid cars with petrol engines are usually 40% to 50% more fuel efficient than petrol-only vehicles. So, the loss in efficiency from E100 will be more than compensated by the improved efficiency of a strong hybrid with less carbon footprint," said TKM senior VP & director (technical & purchase) Sudeep S Dalvi, who expects the rollout of flex fuel vehicles to be aligned with govt policies and regulations. Maruti Suzuki has in its 2030 product plan said 25% of its vehicles will be compatible with ethanol-blended fuel E20, while another 25% will be hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). At present, it has two HEV products in its portfolio: the Grand Vitara and Invicto, which use Toyota's strong hybrid technology.

NCLAT stops Gensol IRP from leasing out 152 EVs on lessor objection

New Delhi: Auto leasing firm SMAS Auto Leasing India Pvt. Ltd approached the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on Tuesday, against Gensol Engineering Ltd's interim resolution professional (IRP) for attempting to lease out its 164 electric vehicles (EVs) through public advertisement. SMAS had leased all 164 EVs to Gensol before it entered insolvency. Of these, 152 are currently with court-appointed receivers, while 12 remain with the IRP. A bench led by chairperson Justice Ashok Bhushan took up the matter and directed both the IRP and the committee of creditors (CoC) to file their responses. The tribunal will decide on 28 August whether the IRP can proceed with leasing these EVs. 'The appeal may be disposed of on the next date with regard to the vehicles that were in possession of the appellant prior to the initiation of CIRP, as well as those with the IRP,' the tribunal said in its order. SMAS, in its petition, argued that the leases had lapsed in April, well before Gensol's insolvency proceedings were admitted in June. Therefore, the IRP had no legal authority to re-lease the fleet. The company also alleged that the IRP attempted to take possession of the vehicles via court-appointed receivers, originally named in an earlier Delhi high court case. 'Ownership of these vehicles rests with us. The lease was terminated well before insolvency. Now, by misusing part of a prior order, they are trying to lease them again. That is completely illegal,' said SMAS's senior counsel Arun Kathpalia during the hearing. In May, SMAS had moved the Delhi high court, which restrained Gensol and its affiliated entity, BluSmart Mobility, from creating any third-party rights over the leased vehicles. The court also appointed receivers to take custody of the fleet. Gensol's insolvency was admitted on 13 June by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in Ahmedabad, following a petition by the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (Ireda), which alleged loan defaults of ₹ 510 crore. Its EV leasing subsidiary, Gensol EV Leasing Pvt. Ltd, was also brought under CIRP. Subsequently, the IRP issued a public advertisement claiming that around 4,000 pre-owned EVs were available for lease in Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru. 'The cars are available at a fixed monthly lease rental and a nominal down payment,' the notice stated. These vehicles had originally been leased by Gensol to its group company BluSmart Mobility, an EV-based ride-hailing firm founded in 2019. However, BluSmart was also admitted into insolvency on 28 July by the NCLT, after defaulting on dues of over ₹ 1.28 crore. It now joins a growing list of Gensol-linked entities undergoing CIRP. Gensol and BluSmart's troubles intensified earlier this year after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) issued an interim order on 15 April against Gensol promoters Anmol and Puneet Jaggi. Sebi accused them of diverting investor funds meant for EV purchases toward personal luxuries, including a $5 million apartment and expensive golf equipment. The regulator also flagged discrepancies in vehicle procurement, while Gensol had raised funds for 6,400 EVs, only 4,704 were actually acquired. Anmol and Puneet Jaggi resigned from Gensol's board on 6 May. The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT), in a hearing the next day, refused to stay Sebi's order and directed the company to respond. A final Sebi ruling is pending.

Continental's tyre margins hit by Trump's tariffs, weak dollar

Continental reported a weaker second-quarter operating profit for its core tyres business on Tuesday, citing headwinds related to unfavourable foreign exchange rates, U.S. import tariffs and muted demand in Europe. Adjusted operating profit was 401 million euros ($462.59 million) at the German car parts supplier's core unit, below analysts' consensus of 416.8 million. The corresponding margin of 12 per cent also fell slightly short of expectations. The tyre business suffered a net impact in a mid-double-digit million euro range from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, as efforts to mitigate them unfold with a delay, it said. But the 15 per cent baseline tariff on EU goods, agreed in July, means Continental will face a slightly smaller headwind and have more room to manoeuvre, finance chief Olaf Schick told Reuters, confirming the company's full-year outlook. The group reported a 0.4 per cent decline in quarterly organic sales amid persistently weak markets. That excluded a negative currency exchange effect of 3.3 per cent, mainly from the U.S. dollar. Continental, which made more than a quarter of its 2024 sales in North America, has seen its profits come under pressure as the euro strengthened by about 12 per cent against the dollar since the start of 2025, reducing the euro value of its U.S. sales. The company's shares fell 2 per cent by 0820 GMT. Restructuring continues Continental is in the process of splitting off two of its three businesses, seeking to reposition itself as a pure-play tyre maker, which it hopes will leave it better placed to handle a volatile market rattled by tariffs. The process includes the listing of its automotive division, which supplies a range of technologies for automakers, on September 18, and a planned sale of its Contitech unit. Schick said on Tuesday that Contitech's Original Equipment Solutions (OESL) business would be sold in the third quarter, without providing details on the buyer or deal price. The automotive business generated a profit margin of 4 per cent in the quarter, ahead of market expectations, thanks to cost cuts and sustained price adjustments, Continental said. "We've worked hard to make our group sectors more resilient and more agile," CEO Nikolai Setzer said in a statement.
